Although the tale may be true, I cannot vouch 6 v for its veracityg nevertheless, it will serve to illustrate my point. The setting-England, during the last war when blackouts X t and German bombing raids were every-day occurrences. Learning from hard experience, the British had built special London bomb shelters in which necessary supplies and com- modities were stored for emergencies. One night, like count- less other nights, the dreaded German bombers again began storming across the Channel. Englishmen again dropped whatever they were doing and headed for the nearest shelters, like so many ants scurrying into the protection of a hole in the ground. Then, one after another, the bombs began to drop, raining death and terror over the countryside. The people in the particular shelter about which this story centers, could hear the shrill whistling shrieks of the falling bombs, but suddenly, one shriek seemed louder, more ominous than the rest. As these people looked about, frantic- ally realizing what little they could do to save themselves, the bomb struck a short distance from the shelter with a thundering explosion, violently rocking the enclosure, smashing its lights, and filling the only entrance with impen- etrable rubble and dirt. Then followed a death-like silence in the dust-laden blackness, and soon the wailing of children could be heard, but in the growing pandemonium of that bomb, the faint flicker of a fire suddenly appeared near the entrance. Madly grabbing candles from the storage boxes, people charged toward the dying flame in a desperate effort to get one of the candles lit. Iust as the fire was about to die, the wick of one of the candles flickered aglow. A sigh of relief passed through that tense group as this one flame grew from a tiny spark to a mellow glow. At least they would have light while waiting for the rescue crews to dig them out, but as the people lined up to get a light from this candle to theirs, the man holding it exclaimed, No, this is my light! No one else can take from it because it may go out! I-le then shielded it from the astounded crowd, leaving the rest of that little enclosure in darkness. From his single candle power there could have been many candle powers, and the shelter would have had plenty of light. With his one candle he controlled the power of light and darkness in that isolated microcosm. This example of the literal power of candle light is analogous to the countless examples in history where figurative candle powers of high ideals and inspira- tions of great men have held in the balance the saving of the world by admit- ting new light that serves not for the advantage of one selfish individual but for the benefit of all mankind .... . . . I am afraid that we are too prone to accept the conditions of our present civilization with the complete innocence of a pet rabbit: our government, cul- tures, and science, our schools, libraries, and hospitals are taken for granted without thought of the candle powers which burned to make them realities. We here, the members of the graduating class of 1952, have a power that took twelve years of our lives in kindling, this light of education is now ours, and the duty to use it in the purpose for which it was created is the challenge which lies ahead of each and every one of us. The world today is learning in a painful tContinued on Page 96? lb .Md foriand Gcrthered together tntormolly on the steps ore the historians who ore busy seorchtnq through volumes ot clcrss records. Are we of the present age so confused in a scramble for material gains that we are blind to our spiritual destination? Are we suffering from a case of moral myopia? ln another hour and a half, my classmates and I shall have graduated from the preparatory rehearsal in school to the world stage to assume modest parts for which many agencies have been coaching us. What kind of world do we find? l am here to tell you what we think of what we find and what we believe the role of all of us to be. Our backstage preparation for the world scene has laid stress on the importance of integrity and moral courage. Thus we have assumed that the drama in which we are to participate will be built on lofty themes with characters of heroic stature. But as we approach the footlights, what does the class of 1952 find? Before us stretches a darkness that obscures the light, a darkness that provides the atmosphere for tragedy. What is this shadow? It is that of moral decadence, an evil so widespread that it extends from the Capital to the basketball courts and to the most modest home. We are disillusioned. What are some of the reasons for this moral laxity among us all? It seems to spring from two general sources, a new emphasis on materialism and an in- creasing lack of moral independence. Our new high standard of living, an over-abundance of money, the psychology of getting something for nothing fostered by the welfare state-all these explain the new importance of material- istic values. This would be less serious it it were not for the easy attitude toward the acquisi- tion of these possessions. Rapidly disappearing is the moral independence of the pioneer who was free to follow the dictates of his own conscience. Alone in a remote region, he bowed to no public opinion, yes-yessed no man to secure economic security. With roots deep in the earth he cultivated, he was a sturdy oak, alone and proud, breathing a free air under a sky that seemed his own. Today, however, in our more closely populated communities, in our more com- plex economy, that moral independence is disappearing. Today, it is important to fit in, to placate even at the expense of personal convictions. Modern philosophy stresses the importance of winning friends, willy-nilly, even at the expense of influencing people in the right direction. The fear of economic insecurity has created the yes-yes man who many times is forced to become an agent in transactions of which his conscience does not approve. This is the world stage as we see it only in the first glare of the footlights. As our eyes become adjusted, it is a relief, however, to recognize in the darkness evidence of man's potentialities for good, for right thinking and courageous deeds. Besides the churches, the Y's, the welfare agencies, there are in this country alone hundreds of organizations whose purpose it is to work for the physical, moral, and social betterment of mankind. But, classmates and friends, this better side of the world picture needs our support. Men in all professions recognize the need for a moral revival. VV'arns Dr. Sockman of the National Radio Pulpit: There is a need for more moral athletes and fewer moral acrobatsf' Says Eddie Rickenbacker: lf we are to protect our freedoms-, we have a second and even greater rearmament task ahead of usp namely, spiritual rearmament. We have often heard the words, The future of our country lies in its youth. ln these same leaders of tomorrow may we see some of the moral courage of Captain Carlsen, the heroic skipper of the sinking ship Enterprise With no thought of publicity or gain, he doggedly adhered to his own standard of honor ehe remained with his sinking ship. He was alone and in danger on a riotous sea. The plunging and rolling Enterprise was racked in agony. Security lay in the waiting lifeboatsg security lay on the inviting decks of the tugboat Turmoil But to these temptations the Captain turned a deaf ear. Today the Enterprise rests its broad bulk fathoms deep, but Captain Carlsen is safe. Forgotten is the loss of the ship, but of undying importance are the stamina and courage of the man. Steel is fragile and temporal, but the spirit of man endures. 19 7 7 . Mo 5 me an 52 05219, Q S Mosr EFF - - - WO' C300 ICIENT-Ann Porsberq and David Rodrigues Od Ord PIZSI- - JI? These girls are members oi the Girls' Sports Council, one oi the most highly respected organizations in the high school. To become a member ot the Sports Council is not an easy task, since candidates must spend several months on or course consisting ot the ethics, principles, and regulations involved in man- agement of competitive sports. Those passing tests in both theory and practice may proudly call them- selves members ot Sports Council. The duties ot Sports Council are many but are all of an enjoyable nature, including coaching, umpiring, retereeing, scoring, and timing games not only in Brockton High, but also in the various junior highs throughout the city. The physical education department practices a democratic way of deciding matters, calling in the Sports Council whenever there is a decision to be made about girls' sports throughout the school. Sportsmanship is the keynote oi the Sports Council, and it is hoped that a spirit oi lair play and courtesy may permeate the girls' sports program because ot the eiiorts of these girls. Q16 , This year the basketball playoffs began with a startling defeat in which the sophomore girls beat the seniors for the first time since 1946. Continuing the contest, the juniors then defeated the sophomores, and the seniors beat the juniors. This tied the competition on all sides and another playoff was neces- sary. The seniors then beat the sophomores, but the sophomores beat I the juniors, and the juniors then rallied to beat the seniors by one ff- 2' ' basket. This certainly proved that the teams were evenly matched, and , , 1 A so it was decided that the official championship would be awarded V Nfl to no one. Q At the beginning of the second round, when the seniors defeated the 17- sophomores, it was naturally expected that the seniors would be the champions. Therefore, the picture below has the word Champions printed on the ball. l-lowever, after careful consideration the physical ' education instructors decided that this year's senior team were cham- Q., if pions in the true sense of the word, and that they should be allowed the privilege of having Champions of 1952 on their basketball. Building. 4 CContinued from Page 165 school with the atom bomb as a text book and the mutilated bodies of mankind as mute demonstration of the blundering stupidity of many thus, we must, by the use of our light of education, shine forth strongly in an enveloping darkness, for We shall one day ourselves be called upon to make the decisions for right or wrong in our spheres of activity. We stand today in a world already exhausted in the struggle against the powers of darkness that would take from all man- kind the light of freedom and democracy. For nearly two years now, the soil of Korea has drunk deep of the blood of defender and aggressor: the blood of American youths has crimsoned the earth the world over from the time of Valley Forge to Heartbreak Ridge: the mountains, plains, and seas have re-echoed with the cry of anguish sent up from the lips of the dying-those dead in the name of the candle light of liberty. We here have a profound obligation to those who have developed and those who have bravely defended what is ours today. It is for us to maintain that heritage and broaden it through the realization of our duty to use our candle power of education to teach a hardened world that life is more than just meat and drink, that glory in arms is less than justice, that right is greater than might, that government is for the benefit of the governed. Unless people add the fuel of intelligence to the flame of the betterment of mankind, then the light of civilization as we know it will be snuffed out never to rekindle again, and nearly two thousand years of progress and sacrifice will be wiped out. Let us, the graduating class of '52 of B.H.S., accept the challenge which the world hurls at us, girded with the light of education, in our own small way, help to keep the beacon light of civilization and the torch of freedom glow- ing throughout the world for all peoples. 96 iijlvffg lil.
