E. Marion Roberts, coming to Brockton in 1913, found the football and baseball teams in the earliest stages of their development. Highland Park in Avon served as the official field for school athletic activities, teams required the financial support of the school board. Today, through the efforts of Mr. Roberts and others, Brockton High is able to be proud of its well-rounded athletic program, its self- supporting teams, its fine athletic field, and an enthusiastic school following. We thank you, Mr. Roberts. 14 1949 C6166 0 e MARIE SHERMAN Our bright youth led us to this goal Through swift years skimming by. Our hope has always made us hold God's Truth up to His sky. This occasion marks the culmination of three years of work and pleasure. We hope that you, our guests, will enjoy this afternoon with us and will share the satisfaction which we are deriving from this week of festivity. This is a special occasion, not only for us: it is also an important event for you, too. The understanding help which you parents have so generously given us has been an important factor in our success. Our triumph is, in this respect, yours also. Superintendent Nelson, Headmaster Frellick, and the entire faculty of the high school can feel proud of the role which they have played in our training and education. Their untiring and sympathetic efforts, their endless patience were always present when these qualities were most needed. lt is difficult to express our gratitude to them properly. Those three not-so-long years have given us all much pleasure. To those who have been athletically inclined, the high school has presented an opportunity to participate in sports, with good equipment and under excellent guidance. Doubtless, the students who have confined their athletic interest to attending the various games have enjoyed themselves also. ln our memories of our high- school days, those of us who have been interested in drama and in dancing can recall with gratification the Class Play and the school dances. Most of us have made many good friends, both with other students and with teachers. Naturally, many of these bonds will, of necessity, be loosened by the rapid changes soon to occur. Thus, although we are looking forward to the future with anticipation, we have a mixed feeling of regret for those companions whom we shall see so seldom in the coming years. We can, perhaps for the first time, realize the great benefits of a high school education. We have learned many things-the written knowledge of books, the practical knowledge in various crafts, but most of all, the fact that we have certain obligations to ourselves, our friends, and our country. This year, Brockton High School has lost two outstanding figures in its history. We of the graduating class regret deeply the death of Mr. Clinton H. Bonney, Continued on page 24 19 ,A -:P 1 I I ,av W ,Z 4' .' ,av A sv' 1 .-ld-A flu 1, vi f .Mdforiand Frances Connell, Alice Georgandas, Iarnes Healey, Antoinette Minerva, Margaret O'Conne11, and Edward Tarkinson poked and prodcled through volumes of class records to present the senior class with an accurate and interesting account of their years at Brockton High School. 20 Cfaaa .Mdfory No more pencils! No more books!- How often have we quoted this time- worn phrase in our carefree, younger days. For those of us who are not going to college, Iune 9th will afford the final opportunity for cursing the three R's. Seriously, as we reminisce over our three hectic years at Brockton High School, we realize with pride how actively we have participated in the traditional school affairs. On the sports parade, we proved victors in almost every field. After compiling excellent records in our sophomore and junior years, the champion senior football team climaxed a brilliant season with a second battle of the North and South, in which the Red and Black defeated Edison High of Miami in the Orange Bowl. Our junior year was a bonus one for the baseball and golf teams. The Baseball Nine sparkled as much as the proverbial diamond when they won the Eastern Massachusetts State Championship. While the golf team won the State Championship, the '49 hockey and track teams showed the stuff they were made of along with the basketball, cross-country, and tennis teams. The girls, not to be surpassed by the stronger sex, were avid participants of the intramural sports. The shining attraction of '49 was the high school band, which established for itself a name as one of the great bands of the state. Another group which became prominent during our senior year was the Galloneers, sixteen deb- onair men of song, who by their unusual interpretation and styling won the plaudits of all those who heard them. The Sarah Bernhardts and Iohn Barrymores of our class were given a chance to display their talents in the hilarious success, The Fighting Littles. We at last came into our own when as seniors, we tripped the light fantastic at the merry Forty-Niners' Frolicf' Changes occurred. At the close of 1946, Headmaster Haskins accepted a posi- tion at Westfield, and, coming in as juniors, we began our last two years under Mr. Frellick, who has proved to be an inspirational leader and friend. The resignation of E. Marion Roberts, director of athletics for the past thirty-five years, came as a surprise to all. Mr. Roberts is now planning to guide young apple trees rather than champion football teams. Brockton High School will miss this capable and gentlemanly member of our faculty. ln our senior year, our happiness was dimmed by the untimely death of Clinton Bonney, beloved head of the history department, and the deaths of Richard Obert and Iames Alden, two of our classmates. We realize full well the significance of the saying, In the midst of life, we are in death. Along with the joy and thrill of graduation, we shall momentarily be saddened at this step in our lives. We shall no longer see many of the familiar faces which have passed us so frequently in the corridors. But, looking back, we shall always consider our years at Brockton High School part of the best years of our lives. 21 -L V+ V , E--... E? YZ 3- - , .Q , Q A -,M-- . We regret equally the retirement of Mr. E. Marion Roberts, who served as a coach and director of athletics for so many years. To thank each person separately for his help in the successful attainment of our goal would be impossible. Perhaps, however, we can thank our headmaster, Mr. Ralph S. Frellick, for his thoughtful and omnipresent aid. We have all benetited greatly through his friendly and judicious counsel. Ot course the band lent its support to the Brockton to Miami Campaign by parading and playing at the jamboree, and participated in other parades, rallies, and assemblies. The climax of its spring concert season at home was its participation in Music in the American Way of Lite, a concert of High School music organizations in B. H. S. auditorium on the night ot May 13. The memorable experience ot taking part in the Southeastern Massachusetts Music Festival at New Bedtord, and later in the New England Music Festival at Old Orchard Beach, Maine, marked the highest moments in a bandsrnan's lite, and the band made a good account- ing ot itself on those occasions. Finally, the year's work was brought to a close with the bands contribution to the Commencement Exercises. 32 N ,g irgi, gde The Girls' Glee Club, since its founding in 1935, has been a popular and important organization in our school's activities. lt has been under the capable direction of Mr. George Sawyer Dunham, who is a Well-known musician. After a pleasant week of practice in the Florida sun, our team won a cherished 34-O triumph in spite of the record number of penalties called against them. The Brockton line was immovable defensively. lt also deserves much of the credit for our devastating offense. Ends Bay Celia and Pat Capachione, Tackles loe Antone and lack Parker, Guards Chet Millett and Co-Captain Bob Flanagan, and Center George Carrigg caused fear in the hearts of our opponents. Such substitutes as Frank Ward, Victor Berlin, Michael Cappiello, and Phil Lindquist gave us plenty of reserve line strength. End Charley Starr capably kicked the points after touchdowns. The backfield was very fast and it performed with a skill born of long practice sessions. Co-Captain Armand Colombo was the quarterback with Bob Iames as a substitute. Our fast halfbacks were Norm Magnanti, Dick Beals, Pat Piscitelli, Gene Nawrocki, and Iohn Moran. Fullbacks Bob Quagliozzi and Iohn Biordan supplied the needed punch in the line plunges. The members of the squad that quali- fied went on to compete in the New England Meet where they again missed first place by a narrow margin. In this meet, the relay team consisting ot Dick Beals, Gene Franciosi, Captain Bob Iones, and Peter Tsokanis established a New England record that should stand tor some time. The outdoor team is showing great strength with lopsided victories over Brook- line and Quincy and an exciting win in a quadrangular meet with Newton, Brookline, and Somerville. Most ot the boys are improving, and our team is in the running for the state and New England titles. Two seniors, Captain Bob Iones and Bob Iames, carry the Brockton standard in the high hurdles while sophomores, Bob O'Brien and Bob Lanzetta compete in the low hurdles. Dick Beals, Pat Piscitelli, Iim lacovo, and Iohn Davis rep- resent the team in the hundred yard dash with Gene Franciosi, Stan MacPhail, and Bob Cahill running the two-twenty. lack Flynn, Lowell Cobb, Ed Moberg, and Dick Loring run the four-forty, and Peter Tsokanis, Dick Ripley, lack Hop- kins, and Melvin Gold score our points in the half mile. The milers who have showed continued improvement are Terry O'Donnell, Iohn Courtemanche, and Bob Anderson. ln the field events, we have Bob Iones and Bob Iames in the high jump and broad jump with Bay Lessard, Bob Lanzetta, and Bill Korske throwing the shot put. Coach Howard Sandrock has worked hard since coming to Brockton High, and much of the credit for the team's success belongs to him. Under his guidance, Brockton has regained its former standing in interscholastic track. 59 0 The Brockton High golt team under the direction ot Coach Lloyd Avery is enjoy- ing another successful season with tour victories and one loss to date. The boys have defeated Brookline, Weymouth, Coyle, and Hyannis, and they have lost to Dartmouth. There will be return matches with these schools besides an encounter with Waltham High. The second match with Dartmouth will be a very important one for our team. The stars for Brockton High thus tar have been Dick Wallin, Frank Hatch, Iohn Hatch, Bob Hammerauist, Myles MacDonald, and Ed Noone. The team has in reserve Harold Willis, Harold Latham, Arthur Brown, George Black, Bob Eklund, and Louis Ciavarra. lt our players continue to display as good form as they have in the first tive matches, they will be strong contenders for the state championship. 60 ennid The Brockton High tennis team has started a season which promises to be another successful one for Coach August Wigren's boys. The team Won its tirst match ot the season from Hingham High by a score ot 3-2. There will be matches with Milton, Braintree, Quincy, and North Quincy. The Brockton squad will compete in the South Shore Tournament in which it has done well during past years. Coach Wigren has been using three seniors, Co-Captains Ronald Carr and George Allen, and William Ferrini as singles men. Gordon LaPlant and Sher- man Wong make up one ot the doubles combinations with Matt Crimmins, lack Hopkins, and Don Cliver alternating for the second doubles spot. Other members oi the team are Dave Clorety, Dave Franklin, and Manager Harold O'Connell. With a little more practice the team should improve.
