IIS- Cl KLM Omfion By GEORGE RICHARD ADAMS OUR PROBLEMS As we, the graduating class of 1948, leave to find our places in the world, we shall discover that we must solve-several difficult problems: competition, privilege, tradition, and pre- cedence. We are living in the shadow of two great groups of war heroes-those of World War I and those of World War II 'sand competition from the younger veterans is at an all-time high. We have just emerged victoriously from the greatest struggle the world has ever knowng but credit for that victory does not fall upon us. Indeed, we are merely one of the groups profiting from that victory. Ours may be a group destined to only mediocre success unless we labor hard to achieve our respective goals. To do this, we shall have to meet and overcome the competition being offered by the large group of young veterans who are now taking their places in the post-war world. In addition to this competition, there are many local, state, national, and inter- national problems which will be ours either to solve or to ignore as we see fit: but, if we elect to ignore them, then we shall certainly suffer greatly. First, We must see to it that a sound, well-rounded education is provided for our children. This means that we must provide modern equipment, adequate build- ings and grounds, ample recreational facilities, and competent, well-paid teachers. Then there are the problems of government-local, state, national, and inter- national. Today, the world is split into two hostile factions, with free democracy on one side, and slave states under totalitarian leadership on the other. If we are able to defeat these enemies of democracy, we shall certainly establish prosperity, freedom, and justice throughout the entire globe. If we ignore this menace, we may be forced into subjection and virtual slavery. Meantime, at home we must modify our own capitalistic system of government, making all needed changes to fit times and conditions. America's role-both present and future-must be one of dynamic, democratic leadership among all free nations. America must oppose inexorably and unalterably all forms of totalitarianism whether it is called Naziism, Fascism, or Communism. As a nation, we must continue to be a good neighbor and strive to be even a better neighbor to all who will ally themselves with the forces of democracy. This great nation of ours has a purpose which we must see is ful- filled so that all the nations of the earth may be lifted from the evils of debasing materialism and slavery. While reaching for unattainable perfection, we should be practical enough to realize that the road is long, and progress is necessarily slow. The road we are to travel is certainly not smooth. Indeed, it is narrow, rough, rocky, steep, and perilous: but despite all obstacles-through courage, faith, toil, and great perseveranceewe shall travel that road to victory. 20
