But he would be wrong, simply because he would be confusing youthful happiness with conceit. For, although we have amassed the astounding total of twelve years of fundamental education, we do not pretend to be pre- pared to step out into the world, and shape the destinies of other human beings! Before we reach that ultimate power, we have many ladders to mount and many tumbles to take. So today, instead of discussing the problems of a chaotic world -problems which we can at present do little to clarify-perhaps it would be profitable for us to take a kind of inventory of the traits that may help or hinder us in our efforts to become sensible, law-abiding, God-fearing citizens and efficient workers in whatever field we choose. Probably youth's most serious liability is over-confidence. Many teen-agers are unwilling to take advice, and be guided by their elders, whose only fault per- haps is their over-eagerness to save youth from the usual mistakes of adoles- ence. But that eagerness is frequently misunderstood. ln any graduating class, at least a few seniors have been guilty of muttering the old complaint, My folks are always trying to ruin my good times! Such an attitude is regrettable, for in addition to showing over-confidence, it also reveals lack of humility, the first of the virtues. In fact, perhaps we shall have to admit, sadly, that occasionally youth is inclined not to appreciate the well-meant efforts of others to bring him to his present happy state: he takes benefits and kindnesses for granted, with too great a sense of his own importance and too little gratitude. However, if he is lo prosper in life, youth must realize the wisdom of listening to the words of his elders. Remember, He who is forewarned, is forearmed. Perhaps the next youthful liability is impulsiveness. The young man or woman going out into the world has many important decisions to make. Shall he con- tinue his education? What about joining the army? What job appears to offer most opportunity for advancement? Even such very important undertakings as marriage or business ventures are entered upon without due thought to the factors that make the project a wise or foolish step. The final decisions on these all-important questions and any others must be made with deliberation. Once again youth is confronted with the necessity of heeding-or at least seeking- the advice of his elders. Otherwise, catastrophe may result from youthful jump- ing to unwise conclusions. f,'UlllfIlllt'll un pugc' H19 12 moment, nearly every senior in our graduating class con- Another trait common to youth is emotional instability. The young person is liable to be influenced too greatly by a false sense of values and matters of rela- tive unimportance, such as parties and clothes. Naturally it pays to be well- groomed, but we must not place too much emphasis on the old saying that Fine feathers make fine birds. Many times, the younger members of a family sulk because they lack the appropriate clothes for the party it would break their hearts not to attend. This type of young person is apt to be over-sensitive to well-meant rebukes concerning his excessive interest in social affairs, forgetting that a friend's frown is better than a foolfs frown. He or she must be careful not to be influenced by false standards, simply to obtain the wrong kind of popularity. Let us also remember that, although here and there we may find an ungrateful youth who has a tendency to be ashamed of his parents' clothes or home, parents often lack luxuries merely because of sacrifices they have glad- ly made for their often unappreciative children! Besides, folks who are im- pressed by a person's fine clothes, or wealth, or social prestige, and who pay no attention to the individual's character or brain or soul, are superficial thinkers who will not be our real friends, if We lose our money or worldly rank. One must also realize the value of making friends-not to use them for self-aggrandize- ment, but for one's own spirit. Then there is youth's tendency to be satisfied with mediocre standards of achievement. Youth is sometimes unwilling to make any strenuous effort to exert himself or improve his condition, relying instead, on luck, or someone's influence. Many pupils in any graduating class could have improved their scholastic grades by refusing to let their homework slide. That same careless attitude will follow through life, in all probability. The unambitious person will never give his whole-hearted energies to his own, or to his employers interests. He is fundamentally lazy, preferring to drift, rather than to row upstream. He is forgetting Rudyard Kipling's famous promise, lf you can fill the unforgiving minute with sixty seconds of distance run, yours is the earth and everything that's in it, and what is more, you'll be a man, my son. The last liability which l shall mention today concerns the root of all evil, money. Sometimes young folks earning their first dollars and lured by the prospect of wealth, hesitate to spend small amounts to purchase necessities or gifts for loved ones, except on formal occasions, such as anniversaries, birthdays, and holi- days. But the thoughtful token which is presented unexpectedly, is worth double the pleasure that comes with an expected gift. And always there is the need to be charitable. It is well to remember the story of the man who, every day of his life, gave some silver to a needy person because he felt that such generosity strengthened his own character, and prevented him from dveloping a spirit of greediness. Now that we have finished painting a fairly dark picture of youth, let us look briefly at some assets that members of a graduating class possess. Certainly youth has an endless supply of vitality, enthusiasm, courage, and adventure. At all times he is ready to take a risk for the benefit of others. War-time air-force commanders point out that youthful pilots exposed themselves to the greatest 13 Cjfflffif gannef qjoffocifazi Cjocfay g .faczdazi 'jonzovzow 110110 by ,1IllI'l'I,Yll lfujfrin llllll If!lC'hl'l Iflllllbll 14 I ni , ' Tug, l ' f 1 ' - V by Q .. -V Ha, Q 425 U ,, qv ,. - NJ - f iw 'il' 'fi ' 2 Q U , 53- rg M' . 2,1 M .Q li Wu Q, V ' 5, Vina' ' 159' 5505. L pil: 1 H gfafid .Jgldory Although the history of our class does not include such famous incidents as the Battle of Bunker Hill or the Declaration of Independence, we do take pride in recalling outstanding events. Our class has been no exception in pursuit of sports to which the fine records in football, basketball and baseball bear witness. As seniors we learned the true meaning of perseverance by watching the football team climb, under Coach Saba's able management, from early defeats to a winning team credited with sixteen consecutive wins. When we were juniors, softball and field hockey were again placed on the ever-widening girls' sports program. The senior girls' basket- ball team made history by copping the inter-class championship for three years. A number of changes were effected during our three-year stay. A new develop- ment in the selection of junior ushers was inaugurated last year. All the candi- dates' names were put into a bowl, and at an appointed time the president drew out the lucky ones. A model election took place in which six students were elect- ed to visit the State I-louse and act as senators or representatives for a day. The band finally threw away their pink and grays, and the first football game of the season brought out a bright red and black showing of brand-new uniforms. ln order to lessen confusion in the lunchroom and hasten the purchase of food, tickets are now sold in advance to eliminate the long waiting lines. A new room in the A building, faultlessly redecorated by the students themselves, great- ly facilitated the practical teaching of a retail selling course. Faculty changes were quite numerous during our three years. Mr. Saba became head coach when Mr. Roberts became director of physical education. Mr. F rel- lick was promoted to the position of head master, when Mr. Haskins ac- cepted a position in Westfield, Mass. New additions to our staff are Mr. Errol Stevenson and Mr. William Parsons. Mr. Bates, the head of the language de- partment, retired after many years of faithful service. Education can be most difficult and dull but because of the kind co-operation of the members of the faculty, our three years in high school have proved both beneficial and enjoyable. We wish to thank all of those who helped to make us: Followers today: leaders tomorrow. 17 676445 Ocfe anal muaic PAULINE LINDQUIST PHYLLIS PAULSON Before us lies the future Unseen by human eye 5 We must go forth and conquer: The time is drawing nigh. IIS- Cl KLM Omfion By GEORGE RICHARD ADAMS OUR PROBLEMS As we, the graduating class of 1948, leave to find our places in the world, we shall discover that we must solve-several difficult problems: competition, privilege, tradition, and pre- cedence. We are living in the shadow of two great groups of war heroes-those of World War I and those of World War II 'sand competition from the younger veterans is at an all-time high. We have just emerged victoriously from the greatest struggle the world has ever knowng but credit for that victory does not fall upon us. Indeed, we are merely one of the groups profiting from that victory. Ours may be a group destined to only mediocre success unless we labor hard to achieve our respective goals. To do this, we shall have to meet and overcome the competition being offered by the large group of young veterans who are now taking their places in the post-war world. In addition to this competition, there are many local, state, national, and inter- national problems which will be ours either to solve or to ignore as we see fit: but, if we elect to ignore them, then we shall certainly suffer greatly. First, We must see to it that a sound, well-rounded education is provided for our children. This means that we must provide modern equipment, adequate build- ings and grounds, ample recreational facilities, and competent, well-paid teachers. Then there are the problems of government-local, state, national, and inter- national. Today, the world is split into two hostile factions, with free democracy on one side, and slave states under totalitarian leadership on the other. If we are able to defeat these enemies of democracy, we shall certainly establish prosperity, freedom, and justice throughout the entire globe. If we ignore this menace, we may be forced into subjection and virtual slavery. Meantime, at home we must modify our own capitalistic system of government, making all needed changes to fit times and conditions. America's role-both present and future-must be one of dynamic, democratic leadership among all free nations. America must oppose inexorably and unalterably all forms of totalitarianism whether it is called Naziism, Fascism, or Communism. As a nation, we must continue to be a good neighbor and strive to be even a better neighbor to all who will ally themselves with the forces of democracy. This great nation of ours has a purpose which we must see is ful- filled so that all the nations of the earth may be lifted from the evils of debasing materialism and slavery. While reaching for unattainable perfection, we should be practical enough to realize that the road is long, and progress is necessarily slow. The road we are to travel is certainly not smooth. Indeed, it is narrow, rough, rocky, steep, and perilous: but despite all obstacles-through courage, faith, toil, and great perseveranceewe shall travel that road to victory. 20 V' Q V Q 0 I qw M N 4 A Jw M ' xx, 0 - A' If Y 0 X f ' A K I 2 , N 1 tl, I X 5 W ' ff' M fy, I X ' J' 3 :x 9 X , MW RQ, W ? ,M e- mf E + v H 7 Q N: Wfw j We uw ,fm A5 4 MOST w -M yy Q- ' f f , 1:1321 ly gl ' ml' MESSRL 4 I , 1 , ' ' 1 ' ' f N F ' W ' JH X K --K ,f , 1 1 X ,' li' in I Shiva: I ,VIH 9 ' ' IFE-:N jg ox was I X ' M' B T q?uff 0 L- Lofwiuc, M2511-' 0 V V f 41, ON if BOY 'F M32 KT ox JF ' 4 51 af F W W M- W 'ha i ng' 1 x 1 Nr. Yet, in spite of these unavoidable obstacles, we can safely say that the careful planning and editing by the staff has resulted in another superior yearbook. This group, supervised by General Adviser Mr. Archibald Kelley, included Literary Staff, Bessie Zotos, Editor-in chief, Mary Creedon, William Collins, and lohn Myers. The Business Staff was composed of Philip Kingman, Manager, lohn Linehan, Carolyn Qrton, Betsy Marshman, Penelope Deftos, and Rachel Robin. Photcgraphy was handled by Robert Laing and Alan Dumas, and lay Spaulding served as art editor, cssisted by losephine De Plavis and Cathlene Willis. Typists were Barbara lfeat' and Eva Outchcunis. President's Address Coulinuedfrum page 13 hazards, and the heroism of extremely young fliers far exceeded the line of duty. Then too, youth's mind has not been clouded by the cares of the World, and he is able to be cheerful and friendly to his fellow men. Perhaps the most important asset of all is that youth refuses to be intimidated by grouridless fears. Therefore he stands as a protector, a protector of his own and his family's rights, and above all, a guardian of his country's rights. ln closing, let me suggest that the unpleasant traits we have mentioned today apply not only to youth. Tendencies to Weakness are present in all who walk the earth. Therefore, every person, young or old, must be careful to eradicate weak- nesses, cultivate fine qualities, and govern his life by the code of conduct that will make his family, his school, and his church proud to claim him as theirs. 109 Gglufoy 'mpg B'ZOQf2f0l2l:0, .sxflzanu if: yuufifucfa 2 W' 5 , , Q l ' fo H25 nzazcgcuzfi and ffuiinaiilrzsrz cufzoia ucfuvazbiiszrzarzfi Haus manga H261 gm qjacauawi , guddu , -7oW,4 flullficufiorz fzoaiigli-:. gigioiigtsfstntgigksiiiiZifggtjiii service is the local Q Louis Benjamin Aqencg 74 LEGION PARKWAY Tel. 2521 - 2522 - 2523 CURRIER 9 X Uonzfzf Lrrz anti of A I A GGLD' 1 s P' t ,Pet I 1 ' aggggfgs 1 A 5114.91 A Siop at 1 74 Centre St., Brockton 276 Main Street A A fX A KX A A f A 7 Bzocgfofz 3 ihdghdmgme THE STORE THAT BUYS DIRECT FROM THE MILL 51-53 NO.
