Qacfccczfcon When a gallant l1fe ends suddenly It sometlmes happens that the shock and the necesslty of swlft adyustment to the bereavement delay a correct appralsal of the person whose earthly dutxes have been ended by the D1v1ne Master Fortunately 1n the case of Mtss Eltza Slmpson one of the most beloved tnstruc tors at Brockton Hlgh School th1s was not so Long before her death puptls faculty and commumty reallzed that 1n the datly program of her qulet l1fe she was as nearly an tdeal teacher trtend and lady as tt IS poss1ble to ftnd 1n th1s lmperfect umverse As an lnstructor her pattence and devotlon to duty were an 1nsp1rat1on to her colleagues and to those puptls who were so fortunate as to come under her mfluence In marked degree she possessed the born teacher s art of d1SCOV9f1l'1CJ and develop1ng mental strength even 1n the most stubborn young mlnd When cttscouraged students began to doubt the1r ab1l1t1es her fa1th kept them trymg s mply to Just1fy her contldence As a result many boys who were ready to qult school now bless Mtss Slmpson for 1ns1st1ng that they could succeed 1f they were W1ll1ng to make the effort Her capac1ty for frlendshtp and sympathy was enormous perhaps the most f1tal phase of her belng Many a m1l1tary man thought of her as a second mother her letters to boys and glrls 1n the servlce were as encouragmg and comfortmg as 1f her correspondents were her real chlldren To th1s work of uphftmg the morale of bewlldered lonesome young folks away from home she cheerfully sacr1f1ced more tlme and energy than most of us realxzed often depr1v1ng herself ot recreatlonal opportumtles so that some dlstant boy or g1rl mlght be brlghtened by a message from home But 1t was as a splendtd person that MISS Slmpson W1ll be longest remembered by all who recogn1ze the gallantry of sp1r1t that marks a superb l1fe Although handlcapped phys1cally by a lameness that would have depressed the average 1nd1v1dual to the potnt of lnefftctency Mzss Slmpson never lost her buoyant optlmlsm or falled tn consclentlous attentxon to every detall of school routrne or pupll need ln th1s respect she was a sturdy challenge to the weakhng and the whmer and to all who make mountalns out of m1nor 1rr1tat1ons that occur occaslonally 1n each busy worthwh1le l1fe A great phtlosopher once sa1d No one IS really dead whose 1nfluence stlll functlons ID the world whose memory st1ll llngers tn a smgle heart or mlnd We who beheve IH the truth of those words know that Mlss Slmpson IS st1ll more truly al1ve than some of the l1v1ng May her brave soul rest tn peace and may she always remaln an lnsptratton and beloved tdeal to every one of us at Brockton Hlgh RTC I I 1 1 1 1 - 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 . 1 . . , . 1 1 i 1 . . . 1 . , 1 1 1 1 1 S 1 1 1 1 1 1 . , . . . . 11 1 . . 1 . . l . . . 1 . 11 1 . 1 1
