Of course some of our members w1ll enter the armed servrces of our great coun try But let us not forget the1r duty wrll be to marntarn the peace whrch We the people of the Unrted States and our great Allles have garned by our unrted war efforts and sacrrfrces We Wlll do our best to ma1nta1n th1s peace wh1ch so many of our former graduates actrvely obtarned wrth great sacrlfrce But for a moment let us forget the tremendously rmportant questron of world peace to conslder a subJect more mtlmate We can remember how only a few years ago we laughed when told that we would frnd our school years the best 16 I 1 I V I I I I I ' - . I . . , , o our lives Now at this our graduation we do understand and realize the truth of that statement Perhaps some will not appreciate that sentiment until they have left tl e guidance of their parents Others perhaps will never be con xinced that they were the Lest years of their lives But whatever our present feeling few will deny that it is through anticipation or recollection that we achieve the true satisfaction from our efforts hree short years ago when we entered Brockton High School as t1m1d sopho riores we were greatly irrpressed by the dignity and wisdom of the class of lQ44 Then as humble sophomores how longingly did we look forward to our senior year when we could lead the glorious life of the envied upperclassmenl As seniors we found the assignments longer and free hours fewer No it was r ot as glamorous as we had anticipated .Again as we look back to our first senior high school year lif t B H S eemed one whirlwind of bells running between buildings and huntlng for a rc om among the seeming thousands How embarrassing it was when we rushed into the wrong class but how much more so was that once or twice when we did it as an absent minded Junior or senior' But it was not long however before we adiusted ourselves and settled down in the somewhat monotonous pattern But most of us however have survived 13-nd now for a moment let us consider the future On this day of our graduation we look forward to many peaceful years instead of war and strife After serving in the armed forces many of our boys will be able to continue their education cbout military life To the rest of the boys and to all of our girls many new fields of endeavor in peac ful pursuits are calling Very probably the need for our services will be great not only here but abroad Let us trust that We can so plan our lives that we shall never regret our courses of action We all realize however that after adding our high school diplomas to our most valued possessions the process of learning should not stop We hope many will continue their educations by going on to college or vocational training s hools while others who will find immediate employment too will continue adding to their knowledge through practice and study lf a person is ambitious and strives to better himself by outside study the chances of advancement whether in college business or industry are increased Let us remember that knowledge is very seldom wasted Then too there is another point for our serious consideration Until now our lives have been supervised and regulated oy home and school but after gradu ction what we do and what we make of our lives will depend more and more upon ourselves and our own Judgment lt will make no difference to the college professors whether the assignments are completed tests passed and oppor tunrties grasped Neither will it rnake any difference to the employer who Judges olely by tangible results Let us realize early that self reliance is one of the f rst requirements of success End so as we go out into the busy world let us strive to make by charitable and kindly acts the lives of tfios about us happier On this our day of gradu rticn let us humbly thank God for guiding us through t ese past yecrrs and beg Hi rr to assist and watch over us always in our future lives 17 L ' - ' ' I ' , X ' ' l 4 'T' ' I ' - 1 , - K' - 1 -1 1 l , l 1 - 1 l f , ' ' ' - ' - , ' e a . . . W JM,-+ W I ., ,M P' V , 4: 'f , b Q gbfzofzgafz Who needs CI GYPSY to gaze into the future, when we have Amy Cavanauqh, Betty Perkins, Ruth Cates, Pauline Aliaire, Arthur Enierson, Robert Murray, Iohn Davis, and Robert Iudqe as Prophets, who have pre- pared the unveiling of the iuture of the Class of 46 . 18 'n ky. .ff My ol, w m cyiifo 'dana A great amount of time was spent when historians Evelyn Hassan, Larena Wilbar, Iennie Pelliqrini, Lawrence Brumback, Robert Nelson, and Robert Ryder pondered over the ancient class records to compile significant information of yesteryear for the Class History. 19 Cfan chzrifcvz For many mrles the event was heralded that Iune l3' People as far away as Skowhegan looked 1nto the sky and wondered what had happened The sresmo graph at Harvard recorded a tremor more vtolent than any 1n the memory of even the oldest professor Waves buffeted shores from the Hebrrdes to the Cape of Good Hope as the MISSISSIDDI overflowed tts banks What was 1t'? A trdal wave? An atomrc bomb? Was the world comlng to an end? Almost the Brock on H1gh class of 46 was graduatrng The f1rst peace trrne graduat1on rn frve years found servrcemen who had come back to f1n1sh therr h1gh school educat1on recervrng the1r dlplomas Other vet erans were taklng postgraduate courses prror to enterrng college and many more took advantage of the even1ng school currrcula The armed forces however d1d not corner the market on V1ClOfY that year An eclucatlonal trlp through New York and Washrngton capped a ten game unde feated season of the football eleven A thlrd consecutrve Tech Tourney tr1p cllmaxed the flne season of the basketball team The baseball nrne not to be outdone roared off to a great beglnnlng and hopes were runn1ng hlgh for an other good record Track came back 1nto the roster w1th a f1ne lookxng squad No radlcal changes were made 1n the burldlngs or ln the currlculum Wllh the exceptton of the arrangement of recesses The number of recesses was cut from four to three consequently the number of puprls per stool was 1ncreased from eleven to fourteen and one half a def1n1te 1mprovement Faculty changes however were more numerous The greatest shock of the year came when MISS Slmpson dred The whole Clly especrally students and faculty teachers MaJor Swanson returned from the South Pac1f1c to hls old posltron as d1d Seabee Harry Reuell When Mrss Lane left MISS Evelyn Roblnson became llbrarlan Mr Merrltt of the mus1c department left at the end of 45 and Mr Spencer took over Mr Sandrock came as a new phys1cal educatron teacher as Mr Sanborn took over Mr Spang s place as head of the sctence department lhe gymnasrum program deserves some rnent1on Under the guldance of Mr Saba and Mr Sandrock the bodles of the Brockton boys were transformed rnaglcally from muscle-less sacks Just capable of dragglng themselves around to muscleless sacks that were not even capable of dragglng themselves around Those puprls who were not orlgrnally 4F were qurckly made 4F as future G I s rmrtated therr ancestors by crawhng about the floor on hands and knees or by swrngrng from ropes That year the annual Iunlor Senlor Prorn was named Cuprd s Capr1ce how aptly we do not remember lt was however the socral event of the year and a great success The Senror Class Play Tons of Money played only a one nlght stand but from the receptlon 1t could have run Just short of forever The musrcal organlza trons also presented programs rncludrng a f1ne Pops even1ng wh1ch was enthus1ast1cally emoyed Although our entrre three years were only sllghtly less catastrophxc than tu multuous graduat1on nlght we already look back on them not only w1th nos talg1a but w1th real longlng for the good old days at B H S 21 I i ' ' ' . of the High School, mourned the death of one of the most beloved of Brockton's ' I I I I . - 1 Qfdii .GDOEHZ jowar A jomorrowb olzghf By IAMES SMITH Through the dark of today to the lrght of tomorrow Through the chaos and strrfe ot the world we shall borrow The three freedoms ot man Truth Courage and Love Wh1ch are g1ven to us from the land up above Truth IS the vlrtue Whlch takes our hand And walks Wlth us to a beauteous land Courage guldes through dark to lrght And leads us rrud the deepest nrght Love warts beyond the sunset tra l To corntort us when sp1r1ts tarl These burlders of our own careers May we poxnt out through cornlng years To those who follow 1n our trarn To help thern too to love and garn So towards the br1ghten1ng edge of mght Go we and they through dark to lrght 22 ! As much, said he, as the living to the dead. Those of us who graduate so happily this week are determined to be among the group of the living. Thus we must analyze the word educated, which is really a blanket term covering many meanings and interpretations. First, perhaps, we have to realize that life itself is a process of education, which ought to be a continual upward struggle, with the climber forever dissatisfied with his progress. As Thomas Huxley said, The rung of the ladder was never meant to rest upon, but only to hold a man's foot long enough to enable him to put the other somewhat higher. So with the person who seeks to be educated, there are no fertile oases along the road where he may linger, content with past advances. The mind is constantly improving or deteriorating: it is never static. Therefore, since degeneration results if we are mentally lazy, why not try to direct our education to the ideal? After all, youth is idealistic, since it has not yet suffered the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, nor borne the whips and scorns of time. And what a blessing it is that we are idealists! Thus we shall try all the more gallantly-to reach the peak of the ladder: to broaden our mental horizon so that we may possess the qualities of the truly educated person. According to Mr. Albert Wiggam, An educated man keeps his mind open on every question until all the evidence is ing secondly, he always listens atten- tively to the man who knows: thirdly, he never laughs at new ideas. Conse- quently, with open minds we young folks may consider the problem of what constitutes a truly educated individual. Incidentally, this is a question which has interested the greatest intellects of all ages. So it is only with extreme humility that we, young and inexperienced in life, dare add our ideas to the record. To begin with, possibly, we should first set dovsm a few errors which many people make when they think of education. The first is the opinion that mere possession of a vast fund of information constitutes an educated person. The truth of the matter is that an educated person does not need to load his mind with a clutter of unrelated facts which he is not using daily, and which he can quickly find answered in any reference book. The mere possession of facts is not wisdom. I may be a wizard at assembling or designing monstrous mechanisms, or be an authority on the culinary art. But that alone does not render me worthy to be called educated. In fact, if that is the entire scope of my knowledge and interest, I am relatively a dunce, con- sidering how vast a reservoir of knowledge there is in the world-ea reservoir, of which l am entirely ignorant. Or perhaps I am one of those hateful bigots who vigorously gather facts simply to re-enforce the strong prejudices which I am unwilling to surrender, no matter how brightly the light of truth shines to show my error. In that case, regardless of my knowledge, I am still narrow-minded. As Henry Adams says, There is nothing so astonishing in education as the amount of ignorance it accumulates in the form of inert facts. A post- season game with the Brockton Veterans was also played for the benefit of the Football Trip Fund. The team was much smaller than that of last year, but made up for its lack cf height by speed and tricky passwork. The forwards were Herb Nagle and Bob Q'Neil, both good ball handlers and extremely fast on the court. Dick Winneg also saw much action at the forward post. At guard, Captain lack Sarson and Vit Piscuskus played the rebounds very well, while Edwin Urolatis, high scorer of the team, set up many of the plays and assisted the guards with the rebounds, k esides leading the scoring. The team, coached by Mr. Howard Sandrock, devoted most of the winter in intensive training for the state outdoor track meet which was held at the Newton Memorial Stadium late in May. Coach Sandrock, calling the team out in lanuary, faced a squad of men who had little or no formal track experience. Therefore, most of the indoor track season was spent in getting the team in good physical condition for the meet in May. However, early in February, a group of boys were entered in the state indoor track meet held at Boston Garden. Although the team did not gain any points in Boston, Coach Sandrock believed that the members of the team gained much valuable experience. The boys entered were Bob Murray and Charles Bornstein in the 50 yard dash, Arthur Young and Roy Kelley in the 300 yard run, George Saad in the 600 yard run, and Ioe Tunewicz and Timothy Kelleher in the 1000 yard run. The relay team composed of Frank Baillie, Frank Morrow, Charles Bornstein, and Ronald Silver lost to Somerville High by 5.7 seconds. At the time of this writing Coach Sandrock and Mr. Roberts are busy preparing a tentative schedule of dual meets to give the team added experience. With a large majority of the team composed of underclassmen, Coach Sandrock has high hopes of producing a team next season of the same championship calibre as teams of former years. no--M-fff5 EGJBLCJ At this time of writing it appears that the wealth of talent returning this year will present another successful season for the B. H. S. baseball nine. A host of lettermen are available for duty on the field, and Coach Holden is now devoting much time to the developing of an experienced pitching staff. Sparking the infield will be Captain Lou Goeres, Herb Nagle, and Iames Finne- gan, with Mario DiMarzo behind the plate. The outfield is practically intact with the return of Domenic Bertocci, and Edgar Pigeon, both holding down regular positions last year. George Chamberlain, a veteran of two years, was the student manager. Besides these starters from last year's squad, many members of the second team are in the thick of the fight for starting positions. The pitching talent returning are Bill Boyd, and lack Flanagan. Both of these boys saw limited action last year and are due to carry the brunt of mount duty this year. The team appears strong at the plate with the long drives of Goeres and Pigeon standing out dur- ing the practice sessions. A thirteen-game schedule has been arranged, start- ing on April 30 against North Quincy and ending Iune 5 at Weymouth. Some of the teams which are to be met are Dorchester, New Bedford, Attleboro, Taunton, and Quincy. The goa1 for c1ass dues, set at SS1,100, has been achieved due to the capab1e management of the treasurer and the dues co11ectors. On February 1, 1946, the Iunior-Senior Prom, Cupid's Caprice, was launched, and proved to be both financia11y and socia11y unusua11y successful. A record attendance crowded the assemb1y ha11, resp1endent with tiny Cupids, gay red hearts, and Winsome va1entines. Success is certain in the attainment of 3500, the goal set for class dues, as a result of the untiring efforts of George Clairmont, treasurer, and his competent staff, the dues collectors. The brightness of the class is reflected in its choice of class colors, which are to be fuchsia and white. Acceptance of a class consti- tution in November proved that the Class Constitution Committee had satis- factorily drafted a code of laws for the class. Thus the Class of '48, having emerged radiant and successful, has survived the metamorphosis of entering our beloved alma mater. The thirty-ninth year of the Yearbook was revolutionized, and new arrangef :rent was injected into the veins of the groggy old Manuscript. William Conley, the witty Com- mentator, is also among the graduates. Other enjoyable columns were the Talent Scout, Random Portraits, and Gab Fest as Well as the news stories and editorials. The officers for the year were President, Lawrence Brumbachg Vice-President, Mary Iacksonq Secretary, lean Pelosi, and Treasurer, Leo Fitzpatrick. Keenan, Supervisor of Health Education in the Brockton Public Schools, the Student Health Council completed its fourth year of service to Brockton High School. The general purpose of the council is to promote better health among students. Each month, meetings are held to discuss school health problems. There was one representative from each home room, whose duty it was to stress the importance of returning dental cards promptly. The home room discussion periods were discontinued because of the new weekly health education period for all seniors. The officers were as follows: President, Theodore Teplowg Secretary, Barbara Olenickg Executive Committee -Iames Green, lean Ann Lindsay, Martha Walker, Dorothy Wodeikas, and Ronald Silver. rcufnafic The stars in the heavens look down upon a group of future stars. This striving group of fellow actors and actresses have completed a most successful year. An impressive Christmas Pageant was presented to the student body during the holiday season. The embryonic members presented the climax of the sea- son's productions with the annual Drama Day. The co-operation of teachers and student body made this day a great success. The plays presented this year were 'Red Carnations , The Lady Who Ate an Oyster , and Bachelors Reverien. The final curtain was drawn when all members enjoyed a grandiose banquet, the highlight of our social activities. Miss Ruth Stokes and Miss Rose Condon served as directors for the year. Officers included the following: President, Paul Lohnes, Vice-President, Ruth Staupas: Secretary, George Adams, and Treasurer, lohn Christensen. Miss Sprague again served as faculty adviser. 60 olurarg onifom , Comprising thirty-seven students who act as assistants in the school library, the Library Monitors Club occupies a unique position and might well be called a service club. Though the club has had this year three different advisers, Library and Monitors have emerged radiant and successful. Miss Lanes familiar face has disappeared and in its stead is that of Miss Bob- inson, who has ably proved herself firm yet friendly. Not content to perform the customary task of stamping books, collecting fines, and maintaining an orderly library, the Monitors have co-operated with the Brockton Public Library in sponsoring the Teen Age Book Show, made possible by Pocket Books, Inc. The theme is Read Today--Star Tomorrow and the show is for the purpose of promoting an interest in reading books both for pleasure and for profit. Second to service came recreation, not overlooked by the club. The Christmas season was highlighted by a social gathering at the home of Marilyn Bourne. With these exuberant packages of personality rousing us from our quiet quiescence at football and basketball games, how can we lose. basketball games, how can we lose? Clare Sullivan, lean Lewis, Ieanne Conroy, Pat Clifford, Marise Sawtelle, Roger Waitt, and Don Rae, under the leadership of Marilyn Bourne, will all make Brockton High remember their unparalleled feats through the torrential down- pour at Waltham and the memorable Tech Tourney. The smart new black and white Eisenhower jackets made a striking picture contrasted with those bright red jerseys. But the ultimate was achieved when acrobatics completed their precision teamwork of combined action and color. Although this group has been absent from these annals for many years, this year Mr. Montgomerys organization goes over the top in placing itself in the foreground of B. H. S. sports, in the high acclaim of the students, and there- fore back in these pages. Now that we see the product of this first unit, we only hope that other years can do as well. 62 Moitffog Jeb- U C2616 The Brockton Hi-Y Club of l945 and l946 has been very active in keeping with its creed, To create, maintain and extend throughout the school and the com' munity high standards of Christian character. Among the outstanding activities of the club was a Christmas party for underprivileged boys, and lectures by many prominent educators, such as Supt. Edwin A. Nelson, who spoke on One Man's Recreation. Headmaster Ralph W. Haskins and other B. H. S. teachers were among the speakers. After a visit to a city council meeting and a talk on City Government by Mayor Ioseph Downey, the club had a model city council session with Lawrence Brumbach as mayor and Iohn Jackson as coun- cil president. It is also a vivid experience in the lives of high school musicians. As a band, our goal is to enlarge our influence in both of these directions. This unique statement by the newly appointed band director, Mr. Robert Spencer, serves to illustrate the importance of a musical organization to the morale of the Student body Some outstanding high lights of the band activities of the past year are the fol- lowing: The Tiger in the Ring Stunt at the Newton game which sent the crowd into stitches, was indeed the most unusual feat ever attempted prior to that date. An anchor formation-a sailor holding the American Flag-eaccompanied by the stirring march, Anchors Aweighf' was presented to the Rindge Tech. game spectators. The Band also performed at the field day exercises in Iune. The band also sparked the morale of the home team at many of the basketball games, with their repertoire of lively stunts and marches. The ingenious Mr. Robert Spencer was mainly responsible for the band's get- up-and-get , collaborating with the officers of the band who were as follows: President, Roger Bump: Vice-President, Robert Kovnerg Treasurer, Lawrence Brumbach, and Secretary, Richard Polson. For two years George Chamberlain served faithfully as drum major along with Arthur Emerson as drill master. Qrchestra comes to the successful close of another eventful year. Beside awakening us every Wednesday morning with Marching to Victory at assemblies, this organization held its own spotlight at the Senior Play, Tons of Money , Drama Day, the annual Music Festival, and the Pops Concert. Some numbers of high acclaim were: Young America March , Goldman: Selections from Bohemian Girl , Balfeg Hunting Scene , Bucalossig Poem , Fibachy The Sleeping Beauty Waltz , Tschaikowskyg Light Cavalry March , Von Suppe. Although the orchestra is organized similar to other clubs, instead of an adviser, a baton in the skilled hand of Mr. George Sawyer Dunham makes music and order reign supreme: with the assistance of Mr. Robert A. Spencer, all those who aspire to reach the celestial kingdom of the music Muse, Euterpe, are started up the ladder. The Monday and Thursday rehearsals keep the orchestra prepared for all assemblies and full evening programs. Each year finds a larger and more progressive group learning rapidly from Mr. Dunham's years of experience. Although the boys did not appear at as many public functions as in previous years, their deep, mellow voices still enthralled their listening audiences in the May Festival and Christmas Pageant. The greater part ot its success Was due to the excellent direction of Mr. Rodney May in collaboration with President, Roger Bump, Vice-President, Larry Brum- bachy Secretary, Robert Ryder: Treasurer, Roy Anderson: and Publicity Manager, Iohn Sidell.
