CLASS HISTORY At the close of our senior year the incidents of our class history do not loom very large on the horizon of tomorrow, for history of so much greater importance is being made outside our walls. Still, for a moment let us consider our three short years at Brockton High School, which to us have been both significant and memorable. The class of 1943 was destined to work under three different headmasters. In 1941, Mr. Buel E. Tucker was completing his last year at B. H. S. while we were newcomers. Mr. Waldro I. Kindig was the headmaster when we took our places as juniors. During the past year we have been guided by Mr. Ralph W. Haskins, for whose leadership every senior is sincerely grateful. In our first year in high school there were 902 members enrolled. This spring there are 601 members in the graduating class. Besides those boys who have left school to enter various branches of the service, there are ten boys and two girls who left in February to be enrolled in college. Our sophomore year was a banner one for Brockton High School in sports. The football team won the championship of the state, the golf team, the South- eastern Massachusetts championship: and the cross-country team, the New England championship. The next year hockey, cross-country, golf and swim- ming were dropped as major sports because of finances. During our junior and senior years, many boys participated in these as intramural sports. The football team had mediocre seasons in 1941 and 1942, but in our senior year, the basketball team took the limelight. They won seventeen out of nineteen games, reached the finals of the Tech Tournament, but were defeated by Attle- boro High School. This team was the first one from Brockton High School that had played in the Tech Tournament since 1936. Because of the war, our popular Drivers' Training Course had to be discon- tinued in Iune, 1942. This year the new physical fitness program, which in- cludes extensive gymnasium work, began. The students have also shown a very co-operative spirit in assisting the faculty during rationing periods. Dur- ing 1942 and 1943, we were fortunate in being offered the first aid and aviation courses, which attracted great interest. We have greatly enjoyed the social activities of our school hours, especially our joint socials. ln 1943, the class play, Char1ey's Aunt, and the operetta, Trial By jury, showed the remarkable dramatic and musical ability of our classmates. Here, at the termination of our courses at Brockton High School, we wish to express our feelings of gratitude and appreciation to all those who have made these three years successful and unforgettable. Although the history of our class is not of interest to the rest of the world, we of the class of 1943 will ever remember the happy years we have spent here. As we go out to try to build our lives in this uncertain world, we shall strive to keep our motto ever before us: God our Guide: Democracy our Pride. 24
