PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS was wwf, warm By RALPI-I A. DUPUY Greetings from the class of 1943, friends and honored guests. In response to your invitation to speak at these exercises, I feel that the subject should be one of common interest: we are all thinking about this world's conflict, its outcome, and permanent peace. At this time we are presented with a difficult problem, and the answer has been given by Archibald MacLeish: This war is a war, not for continents and islands which distance can produce, but for men's minds, and knowledge which men have in their minds-things which no ocean and no battleship could ever secure. The science of aviation is making this globe into a very small neighborhood, for nations are beginning to plan international airports and airways for the future. For example, British-American development of world aviation on a private capital basis, with nationals of each country subscribing to half of the necessary funds : governments leasing air fields on joint sovereignty basis. We, therefore, realize that the world of tomorrow must have honesty, must hold esteem for every people. As President Roosevelt says: It should be a pat- tern of a global civilization which recognizes no limitations of religion, or of creed, or of race. This great Republic is preparing thousands of fliers: and with a world so easily navigated, we must demand a permanent peace, happi- ness and security for the future. Our armed forces are exerting strength to defend the only things that make life tolerable: honor, beauty, truth, and lov- ing kindness. Much of our knowledge has come from the Old World, which has preserved vast libraries of man's intellectual progress: but now the time has come when the New World must become the teacher, and the Old World must accept the valuable lessons of Freedom which will govern a changed universe. Several great Americans-Wilson, Lincoln, and Iefferson were interested in the common people, and these great leaders gave the ideals of the Four Freedoms, united with Liberty and Education. Was it not Thomas Paine who wrote The Rights of Man, and did he not give a clear definition of Freedom? This war torn world is eagerly waiting to accept these ideals, and it is the hope of American youth that the principles of Democracy will be the foundation of a Federated Europe. We are convinced that the tragic pictures of war must be forever erased from the pages of human history, for we know that Victory without lasting peace is futile. William Foulkes has expressed this hope in his poem. WINNING THE PEACE Who wins the war may lose the peace, unless He plans, in faith, a better world to build Out of the wreckage which the earth has filled: The stagg'ring cost in blood and wealth, the stress And strain of dislocated life, confess The world's sad bankruptcy, when peace is killed By tyranny, which seeks, by might, self-willed To rule the world, to curse and not to bless. 16
