'11 I C. 9 UD E PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS was wwf, warm By RALPI-I A. DUPUY Greetings from the class of 1943, friends and honored guests. In response to your invitation to speak at these exercises, I feel that the subject should be one of common interest: we are all thinking about this world's conflict, its outcome, and permanent peace. At this time we are presented with a difficult problem, and the answer has been given by Archibald MacLeish: This war is a war, not for continents and islands which distance can produce, but for men's minds, and knowledge which men have in their minds-things which no ocean and no battleship could ever secure. The science of aviation is making this globe into a very small neighborhood, for nations are beginning to plan international airports and airways for the future. For example, British-American development of world aviation on a private capital basis, with nationals of each country subscribing to half of the necessary funds : governments leasing air fields on joint sovereignty basis. We, therefore, realize that the world of tomorrow must have honesty, must hold esteem for every people. As President Roosevelt says: It should be a pat- tern of a global civilization which recognizes no limitations of religion, or of creed, or of race. This great Republic is preparing thousands of fliers: and with a world so easily navigated, we must demand a permanent peace, happi- ness and security for the future. Our armed forces are exerting strength to defend the only things that make life tolerable: honor, beauty, truth, and lov- ing kindness. Much of our knowledge has come from the Old World, which has preserved vast libraries of man's intellectual progress: but now the time has come when the New World must become the teacher, and the Old World must accept the valuable lessons of Freedom which will govern a changed universe. Several great Americans-Wilson, Lincoln, and Iefferson were interested in the common people, and these great leaders gave the ideals of the Four Freedoms, united with Liberty and Education. Was it not Thomas Paine who wrote The Rights of Man, and did he not give a clear definition of Freedom? This war torn world is eagerly waiting to accept these ideals, and it is the hope of American youth that the principles of Democracy will be the foundation of a Federated Europe. We are convinced that the tragic pictures of war must be forever erased from the pages of human history, for we know that Victory without lasting peace is futile. William Foulkes has expressed this hope in his poem. WINNING THE PEACE Who wins the war may lose the peace, unless He plans, in faith, a better world to build Out of the wreckage which the earth has filled: The stagg'ring cost in blood and wealth, the stress And strain of dislocated life, confess The world's sad bankruptcy, when peace is killed By tyranny, which seeks, by might, self-willed To rule the world, to curse and not to bless. 16 The blasted soil must once again be filled: In art and industry, in home and school, In church and state, the world its weal must find: In vast, creative, social science skilled, Mankind must learn, by heart, Christ's Golden Rule, With cords of brotherhood, all nations bind. Dr. Iohn Dodd says: We are fast learning that machines are not enough. We must discover the frontiers of our own spirits. Only in learning the mechanics of common humanity can we come to live at peace. Therefore, if our democratic way of life is to be kept alive and supported, We must have belief in the culture of the past, and appreciation of the humanities for the future. Men who possess courage and ideals must recognize the fact that the ideals of literature teach us to laugh at triumph and defeat, for human nature will exist beyond the shadow of our time and beyond the darkness which now covers the world. It is, therefore, the human ties which will finally bind this world together in a lasting peace. It is art, music, religion, history, literature, languages, and the allied sciences which will bring new values to life's meaning. In the outline of tomorrow's educational plan, Dr. Dodd explains: 1. The teacher will have a change of thought and understanding if he is to teach youth how to plan better and live more nobly. 2. Youth will be taught lessons concerned with worthy ideals, for youth must appreciate not alone his environment and opportunities, but he must become a master of himself. The schools of tomorrow will form methods in teaching the humanities. Many of these outlines are now under consideration, and educators are seriously studying this course of action. The cultural studies will emphasize a definite foundation in our post-war construction of education. On the battlefield, our brave soldiers will not die in vain, if we, the living, determine that decency and the Golden Rule must predominate, so that this world can be a better place tomorrow, where peace, prosperity, and happi- ness will prevail. 'Tis not in vain, and not by chance I go, But for the sake of men to come That I have chosen thus, to face and fight The menace to a free man's right. 'Tis not adventure that I seek, but peace: W'hat man, born worthy of the name, could cease To champion right, keep peace alive And help a sinking world survive? 'Tis not because l'm tired of life. I fight But for the weary, for the child's weak cry, And willingly my life I give That humble folk might work and live. 17 CLASS ORATICDN Wanda M lfze pmwm wma By ELENOBE S. FINKLESTEIN During the past month, many high-school students, like their elders all over the country, have assumed the task of attempting, orally, to solve the problems of youth in the post-war world-problems which, in the months to come, youth will be trying to solve actually. Realizing that young people are often too cocksure, too dogmatic about their . ideas-which would, of course, immediately cure the crippled universe!-I would like to consider with all due humility for our lack of experience and wisdom, as much of youth's part in solving contemporary problems as we can safely handle in a short time. When the bill to draft eighteen-year olds was passed by Congress on Novem- ber 12, 1942, minors were suddenly thrust headlong into a War far more barbarous than any other in the long history of man. ln fact, many of the boys in our class of 1943 have already responded to the call of active duty. As we Welcome the parents of these lads to our graduation exercises, our hearts rejoice with mutual pride in the unselfish patriotism which our uniformed class- mates have displayed, exchanging the pencil, paper, and books of the shel- tered classroom for the rifle, the army pack, and the bayonet of the battle- field. Moreover, within the next few months, most of the remaining young men will probably be inducted into some branch of the service. Other classmates, both boys and girls, will be engaged in war work or voluntary assistance. Briefly, youth is fighting for the ideals of a universal civilization, and does not intend to halt until the ruthless foe has been decisively defeated. But our battles will not cease with actual military or naval combat. Youth must recognize its duty to participate in a successful plan, not only for restor- ing the earth to its former status, but also for regenerating economic, political, and social life. Before accomplishing this, we must submit to the delay in assuming our chosen professions, the sorrows of separated families, and losses on the battlefields. Will it not then be our eager hope to enjoy a post- war peace and prosperity which our generation has never seen? Our responsibilities in the post-war world will be numerous. Although many of these tasks cannot possibly be foreseen, still more obvious duties can be anticipated. A Perhaps the most evident of these will be the attempt to reconstruct war-torn Europe and Asia. It is not at all improbable that many of us here today may be chosen to endeavor to rebuild the cities, education, bodies, and minds of Europeans and Asiatics. With what attitude shall we approach these restora- tive tasks? I-lumbly and honestly, l hope, with intention to devote all our mental and spiritual strength to a titanic mission of unprecedented importance and difficulty. 18 First, let us visualize the cities whose buildings are rent and torn by bombs, whose industries are enslaved by the invaders, whose people are stunned and demoralized. The United States must send engineers, architects, scientists, and physicians to all afflicted cities. We, as young Americans, sincerely wish to avail ourselves of the opportunity to repair the wreckage wrought by war. Another duty stems from the fact that, unlike American students, the rising generation in Germany, Italy, and lapan has been indoctrinated with hatred and intolerance. Teaching these young people to think as civilized human beings, rather than as savage beasts, will represent our second major problem. Since adolescent minds are customarily in sympathy with other youthful minds, it is Young America's job to re-educate misguided youth of undemo- cratic countries. True, young teachers, missionaries, theologians will be the primary influence in converting these misdirected people into co-operative citizens of the world. Possibly some of the very students seated here now will be leaders of thought in a post-war period. Another direct result of the present struggle will be the weakened bodies and minds of men, women, and children. The soldiers who may escape death on the battlefields may not be fortunate enough to escape diseased bodies and minds. Women and children who may, by some ironic fortune, survive ex- termination by bombs, may not survive starvation and the resulting terror of mind and spirit. Wherever such misery exists, we, the potential doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, and social workers, must be ready to aid in the rehabilitation of wounded hearts and minds. By the unselfishness, generosity, and sincerity with which we approach these tasks, we shall create understanding and affec- tion toward Americans, and shall hasten the day when the people of all countries may work diligently, play fearlessly, think clearly, and worship freely. Yet before our services in the post-war era will be needed forty-five hundred miles away, home problems will require our attention. ln order to surmount our obstacles, we must be conversant with current trends in economics, sociology, and politics. lf our formal education does not supply us with the required knowledge to interpret and comprehend timely subjects, continued self-education will be necessary. Perhaps the easiest and most practical means of self-development is reading widely and thoughtfully, not merely to escape the realities of a confused life, but to learn how to make that life more useful in the community and country. We must read thought-provoking newspapers, magazines, and books, whether or not we agree with the views expressed, for we must keep our minds active and healthy. We must also improve our mental and emotional powers so that we may grow in sympathy and understanding. Most important of all, we should realize the incompleteness of our education, and always cherish a fervent ambition to continue learning and to improve. In preparing for a future world of harmony, we must remember that peace carries problems almost as complicated as those of war. For example, when peace is finally restored, the tempo of America's industries and agriculture will be greatly disturbed. In fact, to evade a ruinous depression, an eager interest in economics will be essential for every citizen. 19 This conflict has also given us a new vision of world geography, with maps changing daily, and strange places assuming sudden importance. After the war, we shall be obliged to learn more about the customs and inhabitants of all foreign countries, regardless of their former enmity toward us and our allies. These are but a few of the necessary subjects which we must teach ourselves. Politically, too, our generation must be alive. Formerly, the United States' citizens were not allowed to vote until they reached the age of twenty-one. This year, however, Congress is considering a bill to lower the voting age to eighteen, since military service is requred of boys of that age. With the right to vote will come many civic responsibilities. For instance, after the war, a conservative element, with inclinations toward a business-as-usual policy, will, in all probability, arise in Congress. Although our country and the entire world need economic and social alterations, the political timidity of some legislators and diplomats in this country will hold us back, if we are not pre- pared to combat retarding factions. Yet how can we prevent such a calamity? By studying the facts and by wholeheartedly endeavoring to express the hopes of the public accurately. In regard to the influence of the public, Vice-President Wallace has referred to this age as the age of the common man. That common man, sometimes called Mr. Iohn Q. Public, must have enough initiative to think clearly and to express his thoughts with conviction. Most people are too lethargic even to bother writing their Congressman in approval or disapproval of governmental policies, so that we may be assured of direct representation in fact, as well as theory. Some historians believe that the peace plans of 1918 were defeated primarily because of a lack of public interest, initiative, and foresight. We should try to prevent a repetition of such mistakes. We must not forget, however, that patriotic spouting will not result in any governmental reforms. lgnorant people who dogmatically offer a panacea for the country's financial, international, and social difficulties, yet never buy a war bond or sacrifice a day's pleasure, unless under compulsion, are a dire peril to our national advancement. Last September, in a speech to the International Students' Assembly, President Roosevelt said: All of you young fighting people will have to take part in shaping our new world. You will earn it by what you do now: but you will not attain it if you leave your job for others to do alone. When you lay aside your gun at the end of the war, you cannot at the same time, lay aside your duty to the future. Throughout the bitter hardships which this conflict may force us to endure, we must not lose sight of the four freedoms for which we are fighting: freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. We sincerely hope with God's help, youth may aid in bringing these four freedoms closer in reality to all peoples, and, by eradicating dictatorship from our period of history, create a superior and ennobled world. 20 HARVEY B. BLACKMAN CLASS POEM When long ago to school our feet were led, We had no cares and lived our easy days. We thought not of the arduous tasks ahead, But rather Went in joy upon our ways. We travelled leisurely along the pathp Our foresight, short-our aims, quite undefined: And, light and varied as the flying chaff, The distant goals oft shifting in each mind. Today, the path leads through a black abyss- A darkened World, crammed full of grief and woe Will God permit us to resume in bliss The peace and freedom known so long ago? Our searching eyes, no simple answers findg Our puzzled minds can find no guiding rod. Today, the World demands a bold, keen mind And courage strong to Work the will of God. 21 I THOMAS L. Firm purpose deep within our hearts Doth urge us on our way To victory and lasting peace. God grant us these, we pray. Till justice reigns in every land, With faith in God our Guide, We'll bravely strive to serve mankind, Democracy our Pride. 23 CLASS HISTORY At the close of our senior year the incidents of our class history do not loom very large on the horizon of tomorrow, for history of so much greater importance is being made outside our walls. Still, for a moment let us consider our three short years at Brockton High School, which to us have been both significant and memorable. The class of 1943 was destined to work under three different headmasters. In 1941, Mr. Buel E. Tucker was completing his last year at B. H. S. while we were newcomers. Mr. Waldro I. Kindig was the headmaster when we took our places as juniors. During the past year we have been guided by Mr. Ralph W. Haskins, for whose leadership every senior is sincerely grateful. In our first year in high school there were 902 members enrolled. This spring there are 601 members in the graduating class. Besides those boys who have left school to enter various branches of the service, there are ten boys and two girls who left in February to be enrolled in college. Our sophomore year was a banner one for Brockton High School in sports. The football team won the championship of the state, the golf team, the South- eastern Massachusetts championship: and the cross-country team, the New England championship. The next year hockey, cross-country, golf and swim- ming were dropped as major sports because of finances. During our junior and senior years, many boys participated in these as intramural sports. The football team had mediocre seasons in 1941 and 1942, but in our senior year, the basketball team took the limelight. They won seventeen out of nineteen games, reached the finals of the Tech Tournament, but were defeated by Attle- boro High School. This team was the first one from Brockton High School that had played in the Tech Tournament since 1936. Because of the war, our popular Drivers' Training Course had to be discon- tinued in Iune, 1942. This year the new physical fitness program, which in- cludes extensive gymnasium work, began. The students have also shown a very co-operative spirit in assisting the faculty during rationing periods. Dur- ing 1942 and 1943, we were fortunate in being offered the first aid and aviation courses, which attracted great interest. We have greatly enjoyed the social activities of our school hours, especially our joint socials. ln 1943, the class play, Char1ey's Aunt, and the operetta, Trial By jury, showed the remarkable dramatic and musical ability of our classmates. Here, at the termination of our courses at Brockton High School, we wish to express our feelings of gratitude and appreciation to all those who have made these three years successful and unforgettable. Although the history of our class is not of interest to the rest of the world, we of the class of 1943 will ever remember the happy years we have spent here. As we go out to try to build our lives in this uncertain world, we shall strive to keep our motto ever before us: God our Guide: Democracy our Pride. 24 Q va- N ,tv .. Qi, , ua ,l-fl 1 .' This privilege of trans- fer was given only to those whose scholastic records were outstanding. Although this plan for entering college before graduation from high school is an innovation brought about by the pressure of war, the students who have so whole- heartedly worked for its success have proven it to be a workable and profitable one. The school has good reason to be proud of the following: TUFTS Richard Benoit Edwin Uses Alan Weiner Lloyd Williamson BOSTON UNIVERSITY Christine Lalli Philip Lashway 'Winston Bolinder Franklin Nelson YALE Francis Flaherty BROWN Iohn Roberts Edwin Nelson COLBY Charlotte Bailet BOSTON COLLEGE Iohn Sheehan NORTHEASTERN Bernard Lawson Gordon N eedleman Allen Nelson 1 is 84 X Nikletm 4 Although the Holden-coached clan failed to reach the gridiron heights of some of its predecessors, it displayed a powerful attack which at times brought back memories of former championship elevens. The record of six wins and four losses does not indicate the true worth of the team, three of the games being lost by the score of 7-6. In its initial fray, the squad, captained by Saco Seropian, dropped a close game to Quincy. The pigskin toters whipped Mt. Pleasant but lost to the power- laden Mustangs of Medford. After a heartbreaking loss to Newton, the Bed-and Black rode roughshod over New Bedford, Somerville, Malden, and Manchester. Nashua was the next scheduled opponent, but SOQQY conditions forced post- ponement of the affair with the New Hampshire state titlists. Brockton wound up by trouncing Waltham in the Turkey Day affair. Coach Holden has high hopes for a successful aggregation next year despite the fact that many veterans have graduated. The Bed-and-Black showed real promise by whipping Taunton in convincing fashion. The fast-stepping alumni were the next victims to be plowed under. New Bedford provided the first stumbling block, upsetting Brockton in a see- saw tilt. The Sylvester-captained quintet drubbed Y. M. C. A., Attleboro, Taunton, and Attleboro again in a return engagement. The team gained sweet revenge by trouncing the New Bedford Whalers. Still displaying their clever play, the Brockton lads clouted Abington, Chelsea, Braintree, Weymouth, and St. Patrick's C. Y. O. champs. As a climax to its fine showing, Brockton received a coveted Tech Tourney bid. ln the openers, Brockton defeated Haverhill and Newton, but dropped the final game to Attleboro. As the Year Book went to press, Coach Charles Holden and Assistant Coach Norman Nash had whipped into shape a baseball team that showed great promise by trouncing its first two opponents, Weymouth and Dorchester, 4-O and 14-2, respectively. A number of veterans formed the nucleus of the squad, and some fine new material was developed to fill the holes left by graduation last year. Early- season indications were that the club possessed a number of very potent willow wielders, notably Marrow and Wetterholm, who could really tag the ball. Excellent fielding also contributed greatly toward keeping opponents' scoring almost negligible. The regular starting lineup was as follows: Gene Devine at the initial sack, Babe Smith at second, Tubby Rondeau as short, Co-captain Red Gormeley at the hot spot, and Connie Cicione behind the plate. The garden was patrolled by heavy hitters Bob Torrence, Co-captain Larry Wetterholm, and Columbo. Gene Sylvester bore the brunt of the pitching duties, Dick Sharycz and Verne Norman supplying clever relief twirling. BASEBALL 88 GIRLS' BASKETBALL uL1'Ba,4he1fAal!. .. A triumphant junior team marched twice to victory on the basketball court, by defeating the seniors and the juniors for the championship of the school. When the seniors had lost their game to the sophomores by the score of 19-14, and the sophomores had been whitewashed by the juniors 20-15, the fourth- year basketeers hoped to make the score even all around by conquering the juniors. However, the latter were victorious to the tune of 24-18. Whether the new accelerated gym program had anything to do with the might ot the juniors, it is impossible to say, but the seniors were handicapped by the fact that some of their best athletes were unable to play, because of jobs requiring most of their time out of school. The championship team, captained by Mary Benton, was composed of Kay Packard, Buth Spear, Gloria Wentzell, and Mary Cotter. Senior girls who have succeeded in attaining 100 points tor a sweatshirt and B are Alfreda Bolonis, Dorothy Giovaninni, Dorothy Mackin, Shirley Morse, Carol Perkins, and Ianice Prince. 89 PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN WARTIME 'fx mi N KEEPING with the national swing to greater emphasis on A Q yj physical fitness, Brockton High School launched a far-reaching program designed to prepare boys for future service with the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps of the United States. This step was taken in response to a plea made by the armed forces for a more vigorous type of physical program in the schools and colleges of the nation to build up resistance to combat the terrific demands made of the body and mind in modern warfare. Another purpose was to develop the spirit of give-and-take. Physical Director E. Marion Roberts and George Chamberlain first studied the situation carefully and mapped out a course of action which they presented to the School Board for consideration. The Board, realizing the need for extra- ordinary action, gave the plan its wholehearted stamp of approval and set up machinery for its speedy inauguration. Acting on the assumption that very little could be accomplished in one gym period, the administration increased the number of classes to four for all boys whose course of study permitted. Such an increase necessitated the sacrificing of some language and study periods. A change was also seen in the type of physical program. Muscle-building calisthenics were strongly emphasized, much to the sorrow of the pupils who limped about B. H. S. during the opening weeks of the inaugural with aching bodies, and complaining woefully of the wracking tortures of the new gym sessions. Three- to four-mile hikes were also conducted, despite the fact that shoe ration- ing was in effect. Swimming tests were given under the direction of Swimming Coach Alton Iohngren, the swimming team being discontinued because of wartime difficulties. Bequirements for passing the test were proficiency in the crawl, side stroke, breast stroke, under water swimming, swimming fully clothed, and remaining in the water for five minutes. On the basis of final results, it was found that a low percentage of the total male enrolment of the senior class was unable to swim. For the small group who were lacking in ability in this department, swimming instructions were made compulsory. The accelerated and more strenuous gym program likewise necessitated the adding of more teachers to the physical directing group. Among those who assumed this arduous task despite pressure of regular teaching duties and administrative positions were E. Marion Roberts, Charles Holden, Daniel Creedon, and Wesley Merritt. These men greatly aided the regular instructor, George Chamberlain, in carrying out his increasingly difficult and tiring duties. Although the increased number of gym classes was an innovation, exercises for the girls were not. These exercises, which tend to develop back, leg and arm muscles as well as increase body strength in general, have always been taught at Brockton High School. Their worth was definitely proven in the accelerated program. Lameness, at first prevalent, disappeared. Ioints no longer cracked. Straight legs were lifted off the ground in perfect unison where formerly one limp, bent limb would attempt to follow the other amid agonizing groans. The girls even learned how to jump rope properly. Marching was performed with military snap and precision. Students learned at long last the art of quick thinking and distinguishing their left hand from their right foot. Swimming instruction also was given to those who requested it. Field Day, with its spectacular performance, showed the remarkable improve- ment effected by the new plan on soft American youth. Much praise is due to Miss Virginia Pierce and to Miss Helen Gilmore for teaching so efficiently twenty-four weekly girls' classes, whose average number was one hundred. 90 INTRA-MURAL SPORTS HOCKEY-Despite the fact that wartime difficulties prevented the school from entering a hockey squad in the state contest, Coach Carl Macpherson arranged an intra-mural hockey program which proved extremely popular. The long cold spell provided an excellent skating surface at the rink on Eldon Keith Field. A sufficiently large group participated so that five teams were formed. The teams and their rosters were as follows: Red Wings: Fontaine, Grady, Devine, Simpson, Columbo and Schill, Bruins: Browders, Elksnin, Smith, Blaseivicz, Nicholson and Twohigg Rangers: Burke, Finnegan, Tasho, Gill, Caldwell and Gormeleyp Leafs: Buckley, Harju, Bourget, Polson, Columbo and Rondeaup Hawks: Iohnson, Caffelle, Hatch, Iaonnoni, Blanchard and Mitchell. The Red Wings clinched the league title by whipping the Bruins in the finals. GOLF-Under the capable directorship of Coach Matthew Nicoll, the golf season started with a throng of potential golfers on hand to compete for honors. The matches were played at the D. W. Field, Thorny Lea, and Country Club courses. Those boys who took part were Seniors: F. Paull, I. Toomey, I. Gerry, G. Robertson, M. Morrill and R. RooneY: luniors: M. O'Donne1l, W. Tarlow, R. Grady, I. Shinnick and C. Reynolds: Sophomores: B. Ekrnan, R. Folchi, A. Allaire, C. Peterson, T. Smith, W. Anderson, I. Snow, R. Sullivan and D. Murphy. Final results were not obtainable when the Year Book went to press. TENNIS-Interest lagged somewhat in tennis this year because so many of the boys who usually play were working. In spite of this handicap, Coach August Wigren was able to muster a fairly sizeable group to compete in the tennis matches. Those who had signified their intentions of playing at this writing were Seniors: A. Iudson, C. lohnson, I. Zuckerman, R. Ellis and H. Blackman, Iuniors: C. Brooks, C. Peterson, A. Sange, I. Nerbonne, R. Liepe, E. Ellis, W. Bielskis, R. Benoit, D. Gelford and A. Auger. TRACK-Cross country was discontinued this year because of Coach Chamber- lain's inability to cope with the many new tasks with which he was faced in carrying out the new gym program. The annual call for track candidates brought a very enthusiastic response. Preliminary plans were formulated for a regular schedule of contests, but it was finally decided that the track team should be dissolved as a unit and that this sport should be placed on a general basis. Under this plan track was incor- porated into the regular gymnastic exercises of the school and was offered to every boy. With this thought in mind, an obstacle course was constructed which combined the best features of both track and physical education. The course was built by a number of manual arts pupils under the supervision of their teacher, Matthew Nicoll, and was constructed like those in the training camps of the armed forces. A trail run was made early in May, proving a huge success not only from the standpoint of the enjoyment of the boys, but also from the standpoint of its genuine worth in body-building. 91 Obstacles used were low hurdles, an eight-foot wall, a bear trap, a hurdle of fence height, and a box-like arrangement through which the boys crawled on hands and knees. After successfully conquering these, the participant had a length of track in which to sprint. The completion of several trips around the course entitled the fellows to showers at the field-house. Because of the rough conditions, old clothes were Worn. Many students who joined the services found this training very valuable in meeting the rigorous requirements. Among those who were thus aided were Everett Bagley, Edwin Nutter, Robert Belle, Daniel O'Brien, Robert Benoit, Iohn Buckley, Paul Olson, Richard Pratt, lohn Raymond, Forrest Steele, Francis Derocher, Edward Macdonald, Donald Porter, Gerald Pritchard, Frank Howard, William Woodworth, Alden Robinson, and Myron Belcher, Navy: Ioseph Hudoba, lohn O'Connor, Robert Cushman, Harold Polson, Russell Gillis, Ken- neth Labelle, and Chester Perry, Marines, Winston Brebner, Army. lf the war continues, the obstacle course will doubtless be enlarged and im- proved. lt may eventually be included as part of the regular peace-time physical conditioning program, inasmuch as it has already proved its prac- ticability, combining both exercise and the competitive element. 92 X E X W staff... With the beginning ot the new year, the Yearbook Staff ot the class of 1943 began their plans for publication. Although uncertain whether or not the book could ever become a reality because ot the materials needed in printing and engraving, they continued their work. There were some disappointments, but, in general, production went as planned. The cover ot this year's book is the same as last year's except tor the color and number ot the class. This duplication was necessary because ot the shortage ot materials needed to make new plates. The statt members were lanice Prince, editor, Nancy Alexander, assistant editor, Phyllis Miller, business manager, Natalie Brush, art editor, Carroll lohnson, photography editor, I. Carroll Stadel- mann, assistant photography editor, Warren Thuotte and Katherine Edwards, sports editors, literary staff, Saretta Winneg, Arnold Iudson, Arlene Boss, Elise Mullins, Rosemarie Tevlin, business stati, Elizabeth Bates, Susan Hurst, Elaine Hammond, Bruce Crowell. The statt adviser was Mr. Edmund Pilla. Although Francis Flaherty and Bichard Benoit were originally elected to the statt, they leit early in the year tor college and were unable to help with the planning of the book. YEARBOOK STAFF 94 BRCDCKTONIA STAFF K7 54. Brocktonia has completed what appears to be the most successful financial season since its founding, in spite of a decreased enrollment. Many innova- tions have been offered this year, including Dear General, the letters of a girl to her brother in the service: Hobbies, a column devoted to the hobbies of the students and teachers. Humorous and original essays were presented on the feelings of a bulletin girl entering a room full of boys, on taking an army physical, on the swimming tests, and on many others. One of the most popular issues was the April number in which the names and pictures of the class oratcr, the class prophets, and historians were published for the first time. Several members of the staff, accompanied by Mr. Tashjian, adviser, attended the New England lnterscholastic Press Association meeting at Northeastern University. They were proud of the presiding officer, who was their own editor, Robert Green. The position of business manager was held by Betty O'Neill. The literary adviser was Mr. Tashiian, and Mr. Norman Nash was the business adviser. 95 6la44ajl944... The class of 1944 resumed its activities as the junior Class by holding its first business meeting of the year on September 24, 1942, in the High School assembly hall. Through the untiring efforts and excellent co-operation of the class dues col- lectors under the supervision of the treasurer, Williain Tarlow, a sizeable amount was collected in the form of dues in the treasury. The outstanding social event of the year was The Lamplighter's Ball, held jointly by the seniors and juniors on Ianuary 22 in the hall. The decorations included a huge old-fashioned coach with a lamplighter outside. Each home room in April elected a member to serve on the class committee to choose a gift for presentation to the school. Fifty-two girls and boys were selected from the various curricula to participate as junior ushers in the gradu- ation week activities of the seniors. Serving the class as officers during the year were president, Francis Mac- Donaldp vice-president, Gloria Wentzelly secretary, Ioanne Hill: treasurer, William Tarlowg executive committee, Kathryn Adams, Marilyn Nawrocki, Earl Alexander, Richard Anderson, and Donald Booth. Miss Elizabeth Elzbut, a teacher in the commercial course, was the adviser of the class. CLASS CDF1944 96 CLASS OF 1945 0Zafuaff945... The class of 1945 entered Brockton High School in September, 1942, 761 in number and occupying twenty-two home rooms. The first meeting of the class was held in the assembly hall on Gctober 7, when the group was addressed by Mr. 1-laskins, headmaster, who also introduced Miss Sophie Urburtis, the class adviser. After the election of the constitution committee, the members drew up a con- stitution which was accepted by the class in November. About this same time class dues collectors were selected, one from each home room. On March 17, the class assembled for an election rally, when all candidates were introduced and were given an opportunity to present their speeches. The results of the election held on April 7 were as follows: president, Peter Leavittg vice-president, Carol Porter, secretary, Lorraine Kileyp treasurer, Everett Deehang executive committee: Therese Benson, Gloria Gifford, Gwen- dolyn Littlefield, loseph Cotter, Phillip Taylor During the first week in May, the selection of the class gift to the school was made by the gift and banner committee, who also chose a class color. ln Iune, sophomores participated in the regular Class Day exercises. 97 Qzeeezul... The Girls' Glee Club, a popular school organization, began its active work in 1936, although the organization had been started many years before that in a more or less inactive form. The club has been under the direction of Mr. George Sawyer Dunham, a leader in the musical field in Brockton. With the excellent co-operation of the Male Chorus, the girls blended their voices in presenting the annual Christmas Pageant Venite Adoremusf' While scenes were presented in tableau form on the stage, the boys and girls sang the old familiar carols and hymns. Some of the outstanding persons were given an opportunity to display their talents as soloists. The club also participated in Trial By Iury, a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, and Ballad For Americans. ln both of these presentations individual mern- bers held leading roles. The Botary and Kiwanis Clubs, both of which were entertained this year by the Glee Club, were enthusiastic about the fine singing. The officers for the 1942- 1943 season were E. Lucille Palmer, president: Elenore Finklestein, vice- president, Ingrid Iohnson, secretaryg Barbara Hines, treasurer. Advisers were Mr. George S. Dunham and Miss Edith Sprague. GLEE CLUB 98 MALE CHORUS Maleehaua... The seventh successful year since the organization of the Male Chorus came to an end after its members had participated in many musical presentations. Since N336 this popular organization has been supervised by Mrs. Nellie W. Shaw, its founder. Venite Adoremusf' the annual Christmas pageant, was this ycar again pre- sented by the combined voices of the Girls' Glee Club and the Male Chorus. The songs enhanced the tableaux which were presented on the stage behind them. Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta, Trial By Iury, and Ballad for Amer' icans also were presented, with the Male Chorus taking an important part in the proceedings. The Womans Club and Rotary Club, who were entertained during the year by the young men, were much impressed by the fine voices. The annual All-City Concert, given May 6, was enthusiastically received by all who attended, and the Male Chorus was well applauded for its offering. Officers of the chorus this past year were Warren Thuotte, presidentg Richard Anderson, secretary-treasurer, and Robert Guy, librarian. Mr. Wesley Merritt servei as accompanist, and Virginia lohnson as assistant accompanist. 99 Emi... One of the oldest organizations in the school, founded in l904, the High School Band completed another very full and successful year. Playing at all the foot- ball games, the band introduced many novel ideas, and earned for itself the title of the Brockton Dancing Band. ln forming an S for the Somerville fans, they burst into a conga, and became a dancing line. At Malden in the rows of an they did an old-fashioned square dance. An Indian War dance was presented for Manchester with a real Indian chief arriving from New Hamp- shire on his scooter. At the Thanksgiving game, three boys impersonated Hitler, Hirohito, and Mussolini riding on a tandem bicycle. Then the band in the form of a V cap- tured them. Finally Hitler marched out in a prison uniform to the Prisoners Song, Hirohito rolled out in a baby carriage to Bock A Bye Baby, and Mussolini came out with a wheelbarrow to l've Been Working on the Railroad. Besides playing at all the regular basketball games including one of the Tech Tournament games, they marched in several parades. Officers of the year were president, Arthur Gifford: business manager, Bobert Smallp treasurer, Edmund Hassan: drill master, Bichard Andersong drum major, Bichard Sarafianp assistant drum major, David Grayg and drum majorette, Collette Spaulding. Mr. Wesley Merritt was faculty director. i-1 BAND 100 CDRCHESTRA if -as A 6 -D6 'Q DCKTQ 'ik 3 Gwhama. .. Founded in l9l4 by its present director, Mr. George Sawyer Dunham, prominent leader in the musical field, the Brockton High School Qrchestra completed another successful season this year. This popular organization furnished the music between the acts of the Senior Class Play on December 4. Besides play- ing for passing and for the devotional services at the school assemblies, they also added their touch to the many programs there. Trial By luryf' a musical comedy by Gilbert and Sullivan, was presented by the musical organizations. The singing of the Glee Club and the Male Chorus was accompanied by the orchestra. Its members also entertained both the Kiwanis Club and the Botary Club dur- ing the season. Their offering was much enjoyed. Several outstanding mem- bers, in addition to their musical activities in school, play in organizations outside of school. Although one of the oldest organizations, the orchestra is still one of the most active. Ably serving the club as officers were the following: president, Atherleen Hansong vice-president, Bichard Dunn, secretary, Melvin Pauseg treasurer, lvers Biflcin: and librarians, Miriam and Meredith Marks. lOl The Library Monitors, an organization started in l935, have now completed their sixth year of service. On account of the various wartime activities, the monitors have not had so active a year as in the past. However, a Christmas party was enjoyed by all at the home of Miss Margaret Lane, librariang and a picnic was held in Iune. Each monitor devotes two hours per week to library work, which may consist of preparing classroom loans, changing of bulletin boards, stamping magazines and books, collecting fines, and various other duties. The aim ot every member is to serve in his greatest capacity toward aiding all pupils who seek informa- tion in our library. Three new members joined the group: Dale Anderson, Shirley Fountain, and Edward Lays. A monitor who has completed her third year ot service is Barbara Selig. Monitors completing their second year oi service are Arlene Turner and Therese Benson. Other monitors were lrene Anderson, Marilyn Bailet, Albert Baroncelli, Ellen Blair, Gloria Darling, lean Gillette, Carleton Holbrook, Elaine Keaney, Claire Murphy, Lena Repsius, Barbara Willis, Ioanne Wixon, Helen Yanciunas. LIBRARY MONITORS 102 SEWING CLUB .S ' Glad... In its eighteenth year the Sewing Club, which was founded by Mrs. Kenneth Wakefield, has done a great deal toward the war effort. One of the girls' big- gest proiects was to aid the Red Cross in their drive for more clothes for tiny refugees. They made blue wool dresses and brown skirts for small children. Hankies with animals and balls embroidered on them were placed in the pockets. Some tiny animals stuffed with cotton were also sent along with the clothes for the amusement of the future young recipient. Although meetings were held only once every two weeks, work went quickly because of the interest in this work and the earnest desire of the girls to see it completed. But the year wasn't devoted entirely to work. Many parties were held during the year. These were in honor of Christmas, Valentines Day, spring, and Easter. The officers for the past season were president, Mary Iane Nashp vice- president, Ruth Sherry, secretary, Theresa Beauregard, treasurer, Lena Occu- penti. The club adviser for the year was Miss Doris Hathaway, a teacher in the household arts course. 103 l 4 The Student Advisory Council, composed of representatives from all of the home rooms, was first organized in 1935. Its purpose is to interpret the policies of the administration to the student body, and to present the ideas of the student body to the administration. The organizations major undertaking of the year was the introduction of the Victory Corps, a national organization designed to mobilize students for more effective preparation for participation in Wartime service. There are five divisions of this Corps: the air service, land service, sea service, production service, and community service, each under a committee of three with a student chairman and a faculty adviser. Among topics discussed this year were pupil conduct, the lunch room, the school's part in the war effort, parliamentary procedure, a project for the up- keep and improvement of the school grounds, and the sale of defense stamps and bonds. The officers were president, Gerard Robertson, vice-president, Erna Iohnsong secretary, Adena Cassidy, treasurer, Paul Farreng and executive board: seniors, Allen I-larju, Felix Moscatelli, juniors, Meredith Hurd, Marion Pyne, sophomores, Albert Baroncelli, Ioanne Burgess. The general adviser was Miss Bernice Sylvester. Faculty members were Mr. Ralph W. Haskins, Miss Frances M. Bradley, Mr. George F. Laing, Mr. Harry Reuell. This council is made up of one pupil representative from each home room, and works in co-operation with the Faculty Health Council. The Student Health Council plans and puts into action procedures desiqned to acquaint the individual pupil with means tor attaining maximum health. This practice is in accordance with the belief that health education is an essential part oi the in- tellectual equipment ot every citizen. This monthly health-education proqram is conducted in each home room by the student health-council member, with the co-operation ot the home room teacher. The officers ot the club were presi- dent, Virginia Kostynag vice-president, W'illiam Nightingale, secretary, Bessie Cappos, executive board, Rosemarie Sullivan, Helen Setterlund, Paul Lohnes, Hermes Boyatis, and Winslow Chase. The advisers were Miss Grace D. Keenan, Mr. Stephen M. Cote, and Miss I. Olive Allison. The Edison Science Club, which held its meetings regularly under the direction of Mr. August H. Wigren, club adviser, had a busy, successful year. Mr. Wigren Who teaches chemistry in the school, is skilled at performing the many illustra- tive experiments. The club was formed in l92O, and re-established in l94l. At the weekly meet- ings several lectures and experiments were given by Mr. Wigren, Mr. Spang, head of the science department at Brockton High School, and Mr. Cote, a teacher here and a well-known lecturer in Brockton and the district. One especially unusual lecture was given by young Marvin Gilbert of the Paine School. He talked for an hour on formulas derived from benzene. He demonstrated his talk by building up the formulas for the various compounds with metallic blocks. Gilbert, who has been interested in science since he was old enough to read, has been called the Quiz Kid of Brockton. His lecture included a discussion of sulfanilimide and other important sulfa compounds. Officers for the past season were Arthur Tisch, president, Ioseph Yanciunas, vice-president: Norman lohnson, secretary: Albert Bachelder, treasurer. Z -7.4 .J-F' 1995, 'ra We ,-1-A., -f SCIENCE CLUB 106 OPERETTA 0,1 Trial by lury, a gay operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan, was presented by the Musical Comedy Club under the auspices of the High School musical organiza- tions on May 13 for an All-City Victory Music Concert. The story concerns a breach of promise suit filed by a young lady against the man who had left her waiting at the church. Appearing in court with her bridesmaids, completely arrayed in trailing gown and veil, the weeping maid tells her story to the sympathetic judge. The story reaches a hilarious climax when the judge settles the case by happily offering to marry the beautiful plaintiff himself. The cast was as follows: the learned judge, Gilbert Fox, baritoney Angelina, Marjorie Higgins, soprano, counsel for plaintiff, Everett Gardner, tenorg Edwin, Warren Thuotte, tenor: usher, Frank McCarthy, loassg foreman of the jury, Michael Nardi, bass: counsel for defendant, Franlc Howard, tenor, clerk, Robert Guy, tenor: and the chorus made up of the jury, bridesmaid, and spectators. The Musical Comedy Club was founded in 1939. This concert was supervised by Mrs. Nellie Shaw, and coached by Wesley S. Merritt. Mr. George Sawyer Dunham was the director, and Miss Edith S. Sprague was costume chairman. 107 l- i 6 The fifth annual presentation of the B. H. S. Christmas Pageant was on Decem- ber 20 for the public, and for the school, in two assemblies, on December 23. Members of various musical organizations including the Girls' Glee Club and the Male Chorus sang the beautiful old Christmas songs, while various scenes in the form of tableaux were presented on the stage. The scenes, intro- duced by short selections from the Bible, were The Annunciation, No Boom at the Inn, Shepherds Abiding in the Fields, Herod and the Wise Men, Wise Men Following the Star, Angels Adoring the Babe, Wise Men Presenting Their Gifts, and Little Children Adoring the Babe. An innovation this year was the use of grade-school children as Cherubs. The faculty advisers were Miss Rose Condon, chairman, Mr. George Sawyer Dunham, Mr. Wesley Merritt, and Mrs. Nellie Shaw, musical directors, Miss Edith Sprague, adviser of the Girls' Glee Club: Mr. Ronald Holt, lighting and staging directory Miss Shirley Fisher, Miss Harriet Bourne, and Mr. Harry Fteuell, costume supervisors, Mr. Iohn Tashjian, publicity director, Mr. Arthur Long, art directory Mrs. Marion Dunbar, in charge of invitations, Miss Bernice Sylvester, supervisor of ushers: Miss Ruth Stokes, Miss Grace Studley, and Miss Catherine Tuttle, make-up directors. Oxford, the traditional English university, is the scene oi Charley's Aunt, the play presented by the class of l943 on December 4, l942. Francis Flaherty, in the leading role of Lord Fancourt Babberley, impressed his classmates by coolly smoking a huge black cigar. Edward Callahan and Bruce Crowell, in typical college dress, were respectively Charles Wykeharri and lack Chesney. Their problem was to remain within the bounds of convention and yet arrange a meeting with their fiancees. A delightful interlude was the playing of a short piano selection by Arnold ludson in his role of Colonel Sir Francis Chesney, laclcs father. Ruthe Dorey capably portrayed Charley's Aunt from Brazil, Where the nuts ccrrie from. Roderick Anderson's Mr. Spet- tigue was another amusing characterization. Smaller though equally well-played parts were Kitty Verdun, Susan Hurst: Amy Spettigue, Natalie Brush: Miss Delahay, Phyllis Miller: Brassett, Warren Thuotte, Farmer, Richard Benoit: and Maude, Elise Mullins. The play was coached by Miss Ruth M. Stckes, with Miss Grace W, Studley as general faculty adviser. Costumes were supervised by Miss Dorothy M. Hath- away and Mr. Harry Reuell. Mr. Ronald F. Holt was stage director, and Mr. Wesley S. Merritt was in charge of property. lO9 The Brockton Chapter of Allied Youth was chartered in May, 1942, as Post 208 of the national society. The aim of Allied Youth is best expressed in the words of the statement which forms a part of the initiation service: We stand for the liberation through education of the individual and of society from the handicaps of beverage alcohol. Frequent meetings were held, with good attendance characterizing each one. The members are seriously interested in the purpose and welfare of their organization. Although a new club, it has become increasingly influential within and without the school. In addition to the study of the problems of alcohol, the group has a recreational program. Special addresses were given during the year by Headmaster Ralph W. Haskins, and by Miss Dorothy Chace and Mr. Augustus Wigren, both of the Science Department. Several parties were held during the year, including a delightful Christmas celebration. The officers of the Post were as follows: president, Thomas Norris, viceepresi- dent, Mary Iohnson, secretary, Valentina Adamsg treasurer, William Alden. Miss llga Herrick and Mrs. Mildred Badger were the faculty advisers. 4-A. 4035 'Q' Q anus.. ,er ALLIED YOUTH 110 gi , Ni' .XX 5PDUOCkJEG1fLLCL wishes to tlmcml-Q all those who lmcws so qc-mevously co-opsvated Ln 11'LC1,1QLl1Q this yecw- book possible . . .
