CLASS HISTORY All over the world today history is being made so rapidly that special bulletins are needed to keep us well informed. Now as our senior year draws to a close let us for a moment turn our attention from the affairs of a greater world to our own small sphere. The incidents that have taken place during our short four years at Brockton l-ligh School have been both varied and significant. Since l937 many changes have taken place in the faculty. ln that year Mr. John l.. Miller took up his new duties as Superintendent of Schools. Mr. Ruel E. Tucker, our admired headmaster, belongs especially to our class since we entered this fine high school together. On the retirement of Dr. Albert C. Mac- Gregory after forty-two years of faithful service, Mr. William J. Montgomery and Mr. Ralph S. Frellick were elected masters. Mr. Joseph C. Spang was made head of the science department upon the retirement of Mr. Edward Bailey. Mr. Charles W. Williams of the commercial course left us to devote his time to private interests, and Mr. Alton E. Johngren was made assistant head of the commercial department. Several new courses in music appreciation were introduced into the curriculum by Mr. Wesley L. Merritt, who was also director of the band. Another popular new course, the thoroughly modern Drivers' Training Course, was given under the able direction of Mr. George F. Laing. Miss Rachael S. Pope, Miss Margaret l. Robertson, Miss Katherine M. French, and Miss Alice M. Sexton resigned to be married. ln our first year there were 992 members enrolled in our class. Since that time 334 have left. This year, therefore, we have 658 members in our graduating class. Our good wishes go to those who found it impossible to continue the four years with us. The athletic teams have brought fame and distinction to Brockton l-ligh School by their various accomplishments. The football team, for example, won the Class A title in our first, second, and third years and became the football cham- pions of the state in our junior year. The New England title was captured by our cross-country team in l94O, and the golf team won the Southeastern Massa- chusetts championship in that same year. ln l937 the hockey team held the Eastern Massachusetts championship. The baeball team distinguished itself in l938 by being selected as the champion team of the state. The social activities of our junior year were hampered by the closing of the assembly hall. We missed the many fine assemblies. the Senior-Junior social, and the operetta. l-lowever, the hall was again available during our senior year. A new plan for assemblies was then instituted. ln order to have a larger pupil participation, each department in the school was given charge of an assembly program. This idea proved a great success. The class play, Skidding, and the operetta, Gondoliers, revealed both the musical and dramatic ability of our classmates. Because of the adoption of the new 6-3-3 educational system, our class was the last graduating class to spend four full years at Brockton High School. We also had the distinction of being the first class to wear caps and gowns at graduation. As our stay at Brockton l-ligh School draws to a close, we wish to express our gratitude to all those who have helped in any way to make our four years happy and successful. Perhaps our appreciation can best be shown by keeping our motto before us, always remembering, Onward, onward, success our goal. Our history as a class is not so important to the world at large, but to us it has been of paramount interest. After four short years, we leave this smaller sphere of life and experience to take our place in the building and preservation of our democratic ideals. To quote from l-lenry Timrod, a poet of the Confederacy, we hope that each may find in his own struggle: Peace on the whirring marts, Peace where the scholar thinks, the hunter rooms, Peace, God of Peace! peace, peace, in all our homes, And peace in all our hearts. 26
