Under his watchful eye the budget is kept on the beam. He also supervises the ticket force, and keeps other activities shooting the groove. With the help of his able assistants, he keeps the activity office running smoothly and efficiently helping our show reach its goal. Miss Kittrell You'd better be good, boys and girls. Those study hall clerks are noted for their ability of keeping people in the groove. They donlt need a baton to keep them in time, or to assign it. Much credit is due to Miss Kittrell and the other directors who have helped so much to keep the study hall in swing. Study Hall Clerks ' Q 'You Th kzk Uf fverythfhg' Miss Jellum Mrs. Polton Miss Kinkaid Behind the scenes we find the administra- tive force of our show, the staff who takes care of BroadWay's 1,900 actors. Mrs. Poolton and her efficient clerks are in complete charge of attendance and tar- diness. It is through their efforts that within an hour after school has begun, everyone is checked. Through the combined endeavors of Miss Kinkaid, Miss jellum, and their helpers a recording of performances, critics' dis- patches and contracts are made. Any person can be located at any time through their help. Office and Attendance Clerks 9 Iii r n-1, . lflllhlffll. .s . , llnilllllllll'QUIIIQIIHIIIIHIIIIIIQ ks! THE VICE-PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE A man in the northern part of the state remarked recently that he had heard Broad- way was one of the best schools in the state. Why not? A school that has a well-trained and pro- gressive facultyg a well worked out and care- fully administrated curriculumg activities designed to develop and interest its students, a student body alert, cooperative, respon- sive, interested, talented, and intelligent- such a school is among the best. Let us-students and faculty-continue to Work for Broadwayls betterment. THE PRINCIPAUS MESSAGE People with trained eyes and ears see and enjoy the beautiful things about them and detect Wonderful harmonies unnoticed by those with eyes and ears untrained. The same principle is always true in every phase of life. Trained hands and minds are essen- tial to success and happiness. Ms X . 'Q .. The P.-T.A. did all this under the able leadership of Mrs. Morris. 2 i sf gmw' rs.rw.m'frrfrff1iHJ.aa.H.iaxioms MISS EKHOLM DR. PARKS Our rhythm just wouldn't be right without the doctor and nurse. They are two of the most important notes in the staff. Without Dr. Parks and Miss Ekholm to keep us in harmony and smooth out the discords while they are still minor there would be more flats than sharps in our melody. 16 lmillllllllllfifll 'llllf7 r 1 , YI-A7 . Case after case is filled with words and music for every tomorroW's performance. Here, it seems, We may study our parts, but we must do so unassisted by our fellow per- formers. For Miss Perry, our Guardian of the Scripts, has decreed that only solos may be rehearsed in this, the most peaceful room in our busy theatre. This is where we rush be- tween the acts for a bite to eat and a rest, before the sec- ond curtain. This is where the members of the cast gath- er to discuss the merits and faults of their performances, and to speculate as to how the critics will respond to their efforts. Here we eat! During their third year among the activities, under the leadership of Mr. Young, advisor, the Minute Service has extended their already numerous services and increased their membership. This club holds a leading position among the service organizations of Broadway. If hiv 1 I .Y , 1 f i Along with the march of time, fthe Broadway Patrol has pro- gressed in this, its second year of service to the school, to an or- ganization with a dual function. Succeeding last year in establish- ing a successful street patrol serv- ice they are now policing games, plays, and other productions as well as assisting in Hre drills. The school patrol has become national- ly known among police circles for the safety work it has been doing and which work we hope it will continue to do. In the next production they will be our stars, and this year they have proved themselves ca- pable by the work they have done. They have beautified Broadway with a note of color presented in posters and the pictures from the Art Museum. As assistants to the Seniors in their grand finale, graduation, they were very helpful. -- :ri vn Ro en, nnoko Malmo, Ros I I K M I g S K hula. Headed by their capable president, they have set a new high in the history of the organization this year. You see, it is the achievement and leadership in these girls' previous high school years here at Broadway that gives them membership to this excellent honorary organization. They have very graciously entertained the Freshmen girls, as the day they entered school with a Little Sister Day. And as for the Father-Daughter banquet, it was a great honor to their fathers. Ushering at Back-to-School and at the Senior plays also go to their service credit. Did you see the cute dolls they dressed for the needy children at Christmas time? So, as their Senior year closes, these girls can feel that this organization is somewhat of a final tribute to their success in the years spent in Broadway's halls! They have lived up to the meaning of the Latin word Volentes, Always Willing to Serve. 1 Wg! The power behind the power of the Wbinfs press is Ira T. Miller. From raw recruits who-hardly know the meaning of copy or deadline, Mr. Miller molds an elhcient, capable staff of newshounds. This year was no exception. Mr. Miller produced again. The staff changes every week so that everyone on the paper receives a chance to become editor. The permanent editor-in-chief job is held for one semester. Maria Swanson held the job in the fall, and Barbara Shaekelford in the spring. Working on the Wlrimx is one, if not the most enjovable and interesting way to earn a credit in the school curriculum. Besides gaining a basic knowledge of how a newspaper operates, the reporter, by covering his various runs, contacts many faculty members and studentts whom he would never know otherwise. This semester marks the end of the five-semester-long careers of reporters Maria Swanson, Joe Hamanaka, Bub -Iacobsen, and Taka Oka. The work of the ad staff is as important as any on the paper, for it is upon them that the publication of Wbims depends. Ad selling, too, is an interest- ing course, as it deals with actually contacting outside business. The SEALTH is waiting at the stage door with a dozen of roses for the ad staff. Its prima donna is the Student Council which, with the aid of Maestro Frank Jones Clark, has achieved much during the opera's first season. Its many accomplishments, including the balancing of the budget, the presentation of noon movies, and dressing up the grounds, were climaxed by a trip to Olympia. Here a visit to the Olympia High School was followed by the attending of a joint session of the legislature at which a speech was made by the governor. After defeating the Lincoln scrubs 36-0 in their opener, the Kittens went on to win two more, tie two, and lose the other. ,X .T ,cf if zfhivx-.CXYZZ rffvfjfkf., ,Lf-11,4 ,I 'fx f .44 7 , lffl lo Right-Gundersen, Switzer, Sigurdson, Francisco, Taylor Uuyd Witter Hcrby R 117 ogcrx L., Wim A Yivfsrof 771 Muir COACH BOB 1-IEAMEN BASKETBALL The curtains have been brought down on the 1940- 1941 basketball season. Yet, the many thrills and chills that occurred on the maple court will linger on in the minds of the fans for some time to come. The Tigers of the Pine Street institution had bright prospects for the casaba season with ten returning letter- men. However, hit by injuries and sickness of first one and then another player, the men of Heaman were not at full strength for many of their games. In their opener, the Bengals were defeated at Lincoln. The Tigers ended the first round wich defeats from Franklin and Ballard. In the second round, the Pine Streeters were not able to click well and dropped Hve out of eight encounters. Broadway ended up in sixth place with seven Wins and nine losses. Bob Silver, Jim Mulvihill, Dick Mueller and Law- rence Jacobson played for their alma mater for the last UIUC. It was evident that scoring punch was lacking this season, but the boys really were giving all they had. Pros- pects for the future look very favorable with most of the regulars back and many potential varsity stars coming p from the ranks of the second team. Lacking in height and short of experience the players combined speed and teamwork to topple many opponents. Especially outstanding was Jack Mulvihill, pacing his mates with 122 points and playing good ball. The sec- ond team members gained valuable pointers and should be ready for var- sity ball. frrml-W'ehstcr, Ricr, Mulvchill, Dickinson Bark-McLean, Olmmoto, T1fIany,W'hilv, ,larvae I I IA lfcl Ls! l f I Ill TENHUS Q W M COACH MOUNT Fira!
