SHIPS ABOUT TO ENTER or leave a harbor are guided by skillful pilots in order to assure the safety of property and lives. Travelers in foreign lands are conducted from place to place by proficient men and women who know the points of interest and can speak the language of the people. Tourists employ the services of experienced guides to lead them through the forests, across glaciers, up to the towering peaks of our snow-capped mountains. Ships don't just drift into port even with favorable winds and tides. Travelers who go aimlessly from place to place haven't really travelled. Adventurous tourists who ignore the warnings of guides and attempt to climb the mountain peaks alone are usually lost or injured. Students would become confused and lost amid the complexity of courses, activities, and objectives during their four-year high school journey if it were not for the guidance service placed at the disposal of each high school boy and girl. Students who avail themselves of the services of experienced advisers and counselors will, at graduation time, find that they have learned the secrets of acquiring, organizing, and utilizing information and are well on their way to a successful career. ,,...,f- TID FINDING THE RIGHT kind of work is about as important as anything we have to do. For most of us have to make our own way in life, and prefer to do so. The old days of following in our father's footsteps or trade or profession are gone, likewise, those of just work- ing into whatever happened to be nearby. Nowadays, the problem is more complicated. Kinds of work are infinite. We need guides, both to know what kinds of work there are to be done, and to know our own aptitudes and abilities, what is offered and what is required. And there are guides. ln school and out, in classroom, and in libraries, in books and in magazines, experience and knowledge are ready to lead the way. Roll teachers and class counselors give definite vocational guidance. Conferences are arranged by the girls' adviser and the boys' adviser to bring experienced members from various vocations and professions to speak before groups. Thus the choice of an occupation, instead of being left to chance, is carefully directed. If we are wise, we will look for these guides and follow them. Vice Principal. x JNWWHH I i t t B. But he has pro- bably seen it from the bench, for the atmosphere is really friendly and fairly hums vvith activity. The biggest friend in the office is Linton P. Bennett, our principal. l-le and l-leber D. jonsonn, vice-principal, are the guiding forces of the government that manages 2,084 pupils. Through the office the faculty is contacted and receives notices. Every day before the beginning of classes, teachers are busily gathering material from their boxes. Eager- ness for their work can be seen as they smile at students passing by and chat with their faculty friends. Then off to their rooms they dash . . . vvhat vvill the day hold forth? An army of student clerks aids in the administration. Qne corps, under Miss Dorothy Kincaid, head clerk, handles credits, graduation lists, reports, and registrations. Another group, led by Miss Rosemary Gall, assistant clerk, is responsible for athletic eligibilities and non-resident registrations. A third, under the leadership of Mrs. Bernice Poolton, has charge of attendance, late arrivals, and early dismissals. Qutside of these headquarters, there is the vital Activity Qffice, directed by G. Pritchard vvho has the assistance of student clerks. Activity is a vvell-chosen vvord I for this force which manages the stamp cards, banking, and all the finances ofthe school is certainly active. Mrs. l'lelen Carstens, study hall clerk . . .the underclassmen checkers. . . the ,junior- Senior clerks . . . all deserve praise for the success of the study hall. E. B. Lawrence, the custodian, has the task of keeping account of the hundred and one lockers. David Baskervilleis vvork in the book room is another cog in the machinery that has kept the school running smoothly. Because of these services the administration is most important . . . it is the nerve center of the school. of Things. . . STUDY HALL CLERKS MR. BASKERVILLE MR. LAWRENCE MRS. Mowry These Busy Sophomores A BOY AND GIRL stood upon the stage. Suddenly, with an easy motion, the girl flipped the boy on his back vvith a crash. The victim picked himself up, and again the lass tossed him. No wonder , . . those vvere a fevv of the jiu-jitsu tricks that the Sophomore Class learned from S. jorgenson, the expert from the Seattle Police Department, who gave an exhibition at one of their meetings. Judging from that and the other meetings, the program committee, led by Mac l-lillman, must have been a hustling one. At the Christmas gathering, four reels of motion pictures were featured . . . even though Mickey Mouse vvas not included on the bill, the shovv vvas received enthusiastically. , Due to the friendly help and the foresightedness of the adviser, Miss Dorothy Cassidy, as vvell as that of the counselor, Miss Carrie B. Movvry, the Class of '40, instead of resting on its well-earned laurels, is looking forward to an even more active, profitable year as the junior Class. The weekly paper was awarded first honor rating in a national contest conducted by the Columbia University Scholastic Press Association. Why does Whims consistently take high ratings? The reason is lra T. Miller. l'-le has injected the spirit and knowledge of journalism into the students ot newswriting. For the skillful editing the entire class deserves credit, because the members alternate positions on the stall weekly. Around these four, Tom Smart, Louis Lenz, Dave Aden, and slaclc Gorham, Coach Hall began to build his 1937 team with an eye to the future rather than to the present. However, his plans were thwarted somewhat by that bug-a-boo of all coaches, injuries of players. Two lettermen, Louis Lenz and Captain Dave Aden, were forced out for the remainder of the season as a result of injuries in practice. Coach Hall seemed to be haunted by the injury jinx, for he lost many of his good players at the time they were needed most. Opener Proves Disastrous The inexperience of the green Bengal team was clearly brought out in the first game with Roosevelt, October Q. Bobby Ericlcson, along with ten other Rough Riders, toolc the Tigers to taslc in the first game of the colorful opening doubleheader and sent them home a sadder and wiser team after defeating them Q5-O. This opening contest proved the mettle of many of the players who, as it proved, continued to play heads-up ball for the remainder of the season. Norm Campbell, Bob Metz, Doug Anderson, jim Yoshida, Jaclc Gorham, Bill Boscole, Herb Carroll, and Bill Q'Neill were among the Pine Streeters that loolced good to the stands. Eagles Defeat Bengals Cleveland hcid a field day when they bested the Bengals in a contest that was almost a repetition of the first game. Even the score was the same, 25-O. Norm Campbell was the Tigers' chief ground gainer, but he just couldn't lceep out of these eager Eagles, arms. Another Goose Egg ln a game that was pre-doped to be a draw, the Franklin Green Wave turned on the heat and smothered the followers of Roy Hall, '18-O. But Metz, Boscole, Campbell, and Cciptain Tom Smart made the going tough for the Quakers. CAMPBELL BOSCOLE CAPT. SMART W i' if Y Y 10 O Drama in the Mud Bowl Garfield 39, Broadway Olll The disciples of l.eon Brigham fell upon the green Tigers and turned them inside out. The score when the final gun sounded was 39-O, with the Bulldogs on the long end of the score. This was the highest score in the high school league for 1937. Campbell Scores First Touchdown Although they did not win over Queen Anne, the Tigers. scored somewhat ol a moral victory when Norm Campbell lcnifed over guard lor the first Broadway touchdown of the season. The Bengals were brought within scoring distance by a series ol forward passes. Une of them from Phillips to Metz was good for forty yards and landed the pigslcin on the Grizzly four yard line. From there the ball went over the line and put six points on the board for Broadway. Metz, Budlong, Phillips, Smart, Boscole, and Anderson helped to put over those six points. lndians Nose Out Tigers The final game with West Seattle came within a hair's breadth of being a Pine Street victory. But with the score standing at 7-O in favor of the Redskins, the l-lall warriors couldn't shove the ball over from the four yard marker, with four downs to go. They had chances to score later, but the over- eager Tigers muiied them. Captain Smart, Bob Metz, Gene Cotton, l-lal Ragge, and ,laclc Gorham, all graduating Seniors, turned in notable performances in their last game. Hall Tries New System Coach l-lall tried out the new system ol having, instead of the usual marleed division between the first and second squads, one squad embracing what would be the first and second teams. This gave the boys more chance to learn the game by experience, in the opinion of Coach l'lall, The result is that he will have twenty-two returning lettermen next September. The outloolc for next season is decidedly brighter than when Coach Hall first entered Broadway. Bob Bomber Heaman will be assistant coach again. After a hard fought battle which saw the Bengals challenge the lead of the Bulldogs several times, the final score read 3'l-'l9, with the Tigers going home on the short end ofthe score. The next contest was held in the Bengal gym and the opponent was the strong Franklin team. With the Quakers in the lead 30-'IQ at the third quarter, the disciples of Bob Heaman put on an amazing rally and overhauled the Quakers only to weaken in the last minutes and lose the game 44-33. Drop Games to indians-Lynx West Seattle defeated Broadway in what is termed by many as a hard-luckn game, The Bengals led all the way until the last thirty seconds of the game when the Indians caught up and passed the Tigers. The Tigers were ahead by ten counters at the half, but due to the uncanny shooting of Qkamura and Brooks, the Purple and Whiters soon overtook the Bengals. When the gun sounded, the scoreboard read 40-38 in favor of Garfield. Franklin Takes Another A dreary game at Franklin found the Bengals badly off their game with the result that the Quakers handily subdued the Tigers 41-QQ.
