Ellie 'Baath nf Bi1'PHnra 0 The Board of Directors of Seattle School District No. 1 control all the business affairs and outline the policies, estab- lish and maintain the public schools of the city, including the High School. The board consists of five members, elected for term of three years each. The present directors are: Mr. John Schram, president, Mr. E. Shorrock, Vice-President, Mr. E. C. Hughes, Mr. F. M. Guion and Dr. W. A, Shannon. Mr. Hughes is the senior member in point of service, hav- ing been twice 're-elected and is now in his eighth year as director. Mr. Hughes served three years as president, declin- ing re-election this year owing to the pressure of other duties. Mr. Shorrock is serving his second term, now in his fifth year. Mr. Schram is serving his third year. Mr. Guion and Dr. Shan- non are new members now serving their first. year. The board holds regularly monthly meetings on the 7th of every month with numerous special meetings and committee conferences. The record shows an 'average of over tive meet- ings per month for the past two years., The six standing com- mittees, viz: Auditing, buildings-and grounds, finance, purchas- ing, teachers and salaries and text-books and course of study composed of three directors each, do much of the detail work. Thirty-eight schools are now established and seven addi- tional sites secured. Five hundred and fifteen teachers are employed, and next year with pending annexations completed, Seattle will have over 50 schools and probably not less than G00 teachers. ' 7 There was expended on maintenance account during the last fiscal year qH655,686.29, while nearly one-half million dollars additional was expended for new sites, buildings and furniture. 12
