BROADWAY, v LAG IK i A - 1986 Memories Broadway High School Broadway Virginia Volume 34 Student Council President Shane Ritchie gives final instructions to past BHS Homecoming Homecoming Queen Susan Rush is queens. escorted by her father Clarence Rush at halftime of the magical night. The theme of “Never Surrender” was carried out in Broadway High School’s Homecoming events for 1985. Classes had competitions in hall decorations, spirit days and class floats. At the annual parade the Eli Drama Club, advertising the fall production of “Barefoot in the Park,” won the prize for the best float, and the senior class settled for second place with their recon¬ structed Iwo Jima flag-raising scene. Halftime activities included the crowning of the Homecoming queen Susan Rush by Kay Wine, BHS’s first queen, and a performance by the band, drill team and majorette. The homecoming dance began after the game. At the pre-game bonfire the cheerleaders cast a spell on Fort Defiance High School. 2 The Magic of Homecoming 1985 V Freshman attendant Charity Caplinger is escorted by Edd Allison. Sophomore attendant Lisa Slater is escorted by Clint Hinkle. Junior attendant Laura Roush is escorted by Chip Wilson. Senior attendants Kim Ryman, Susan Rush, and Selena Dean with escorts Fred Ryman, Clarence Rush, and Dale Minton, respectively. 3 Tricks of the Trade Whether students are in class or on the football field, teachers and coaches want them to give their “all.” The trick of this demand is to make it appear to be true. Thus are all students magicians at sometime in their school careers. Wendy Goding tries to convince everyone that she really is studying. Tonya Branner seems to be concentrat¬ ing intently in office specialist class: 4 5 David Hughes and Marc Golladay, flew in from Miami just for Beach Day. The bluejean ball et of Shannon Hummel is applauded by Julie Glassferd, Melissa Pegram, and Gloria Mongold. Believe it or not, this is the teachers’ idea of Dress-Up Day. The Spirits of Homecoming Week 6 Home economics teacher Donna Martz “dressed herself up” as Madonna. Why has everyone deserted Tina Lantz? Underdog Angie Shirkey and would-be graduate Becky Brawley can hardly wait for class to start. Each annual Homecoming week at BHS is set aside as a time for students to show spirit, enthusiasm, originality and creativity in their dress. Each day for 1985 emphasized partic¬ ular attire: tee shirts and sweats; twins; crazy; beach; and dress- up. The class winner each day added to the competition for best spirit. 7 Magical memories for those who have passed . . . Graduation, one of the school’s biggest events, is usually held on the football field. In case of rain the gym becomes packed with spectators in its every inch: parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends, each eager to see his favorite senior get the diploma that will declare him or her a graduate of Broadway High School. A departing senior clutches a graduation program. The crowd listens as a chorus of seniors sing together for a final time. 8 and those who still remain waiting . . . Lynn Morris has the eyes of a tigress. Michele Coffman ponders the magic of science. Angie Comer and Judy Wittig take a break from “hill coaching” JV football. Is Art for Athletes a new course for Mike Painter, Don Hughes, Ron Davis, and Danny Borg? 9 Magical moments in time Students and teachers enjoy different activities. Some are interested in drama, some in photog¬ raphy, and some in just getting through the day with the least hassle. Fall and winter sunsets are spectacular in our part of the Valley. The trees lining the driveway to school display their colors each year. Harry Suters flirts his way through another year. Mike Strawderman and Danny Borg slug it out in the spring muscial “Ducktails and Bobby Sox.” 10 While leading cheers in the musical “Ducktails and Bobby Sox,” Andra Puffenbarger, Sheny Rodeffer and Deanna Hansbrough lend a smile to the photographer. English teacher Cindy Leach, a new face at BHS, takes time off from her rowdy English class. Looking exhausted, Shane Ritchie and Ann Coyle take a break after many hours of rehears¬ ing the spring play. 11 Another place and time is what David Mongold is dreaming of. After school study provides Shannon Dove with a quiet moment before drama practice. Silence may be golden, but individuality is magic! 12 School is usually thought of as crowded halls and sometimes noisy classes, but every day there are quiet moments for many students. These times of thoughtfulness and questioning may occur in art class, in special studies, in the halls after school and at other unexpected times. In a large school finding and keeping one’s identity is often difficult, but there are rare occasions when a student finds himself, as if by magic, alone. Does Quinton Conley know all the answers? Analyzing a Washington Redskin program, Sheldon Fitzwater predicts the outcome of Sunday’s game. 13 Magic is also found in being one of the crowd or in standing apart . . . Friendships, team sports, classes and extra-curricular activities are the main ingredi¬ ents of high school life. For a successful mixing of the above, it oftens becomes necessary for students to make choices about being a part of a crowd or trying on their own to achieve their goals. An autumn afternoon seems to agree with Jennifer Lee and Dani Bowman. Running back David Ryman stands apart form Fort Defiance defenders. 14 Students show various “enthusiastic” expressions during Mrs. Rhodes’ government class. Members of the Varsity Club remind us that the Gobblers are No. 1. 15 Mellenie Runion patiently waits . . FBLA starts the year early with President Jennifer Cullers preparing for the year’s agenda. Striding toward the next hurdle, Ron “Tink” Davis is hounded by his Harrisonburg opponent. 16 In their early morning drama class Mike Strawderman and David Switzer study for impromptu readings. Running in one of her last cross country meets, Melissa Branner strives for individual excellence. 17 Lost in understanding are Kelly Phillips, Angie Shirkey, Mrs. Holm and Tim Kennedy. 18 Seniors share special pride in their last float, which won second place in Homecoming competition 19 20 Wonderful Worldly Classes Seniors 1986 Class Officers: Susan Rush, Secretary; Jennifer Cullers, Treasurer, Selena Dean, President; Tina Lantz, Vice- President. The Neil Simon comedy, directed by Cindy Leach, centers around two newlyweds and their adjustment to married life. After a six-day honeymoon, Paul Bratter, a young lawyer who has just won his first case (six cents in damages), and his wife Corie, who is as free-spirited as they come, move into their first home, an apartment complete with backwards plumbing, broken skylight, and crazy neighbors. She loves it, he hates it — and soon there’s trouble in paradise. Their problems increase with the appearance of Victor Velasco, an outlandish old man living in their attic, and Corie’s attempt to pair him off with her proper and dignified mother. When their differences of opinion threaten to break up the marriage, Corie and Paul learn, with some guidance from a comical, philosophical telephone repairman, that the two most important ingredients in a marriage are love and compro¬ mise. 102 103 Special Honors Letter of Commendation: Mark Driver. You are probably familiar with Donna dribbling a basketball, serving a volleyball, running track, or even playing her trumpet, but have you ever seen her swing a golf club? Donna’s golf “career” began at the age of ten when she first started playing in leagues throughout the Valley. At the age of eleven she participated in her first state tournament and won it two years later. She has repetitively done so ever since. In the summer of 1984 Donna participated in a small, select invitational held at the Country Club of North Carolina, and it was her first out-of-state tournament. She returned again to the CCNC in 1985 and won in her age division. Also in 1985, she attended the North South National Invitational in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Although the pressure involved competing with some of the finest golfers her age from across the nation, Donna placed a triumphant sixth place from among sixty girls. A little closer to home, Donna holds the record at The Shenvalee in New Market. Living just a few miles away, Donna learned to play golf there and now spends most of her spare time there. What does the future hold for this aspiring athlete? Various colleges have shown an interest in Donna’s golfing, but the lucky recipient of this athlete will probably be JMU. Who knows what she will study, but it’s guaranteed she will be playing golf! Lest we forget, Donna also plays volleyball. From a very talented district she was named to Second Team, a real honor considering the quality of the competition. The cheering section erupts at the Harrisonburg-Broadway basketball game. 131 Student Council Association Members: F. Lohr, S. Suter, S. Ritchie, G. Harrison, C. Davis, L. Parker, T. Shirkey, G.
