“And then we became seniors . juniors • At an upcoming freshman ' s first tour of Broad¬ way High School during eighth grade orientation, the possibility of deciphering the ways and means of the hallway system seems remote. These stu¬ dents’ reign and seniority over at John C. Myers is soon counterattacked by their being the babes once again. The October Homecoming float is the class ' first attempt to work together, but in class this togetherness is shattered for the first time by intermingling upperclassmen with underclassmen. Uncertainty abounds and is obvious by the scared silence of the ninth grade bleachers during the cheerleaders ' roll call. It is hard to be outspoken, though, when their identity is questioned by their being labeled Natalie ' s little sister or Rob ' s baby brother. Sophomore life is much easier. Teachers have learned more names, and there is a younger class following tenth graders. Throughout the last year of required health and physical education new mini¬ classes are part of the curriculum. Hunter Safety is learned, and Drivers ' Ed and Sex Ed help every¬ one to learn all the things he she ever wanted to know. Classes are advancing to high levels of diffi¬ culty, but students are over freshman fright and are getting more involved. A junior ' s year is a busy year. Eleventh graders are finally considered upperclassme n, meaning ju¬ nior varsity players can be varsity, most students have job eligibility, and MVTC classes accept two- year enrollees. PSATs begin to prepare college- bound pupils, and as each person reaches sixteen, he or she is eligible for a driver’s license. Juniors feel as if they are constantly organizing, exercising, or thinking of ideas for fundraisers, and they usual¬ ly are. A main event of the year is providing and going to the Junior-Senior Prom after which there are only a few days before juniors can be labeled seniors. For some students their senior year is the shortest; for others, the longest. Serious thoughts enter twelfth-grade minds as they scramble to improve SAT scores and meet college application deadlines. Many pupils work part-time or full-time while trying to attain all of the required credits and make-up classes before June. Inter¬ mingled among these headaches are senior priv¬ ileges to take advantage of and look forward to. Honor students are masters on slave day; seniors can be first through the lunch line, attend the ban¬ quet, go on government field trips, get yearbooks first, be entitled to a motto, flower, and colors, and have the prom presented in their honor. Getting an education while collecting four years worth of memories is like having the cake and eat¬ ing it too, and the whipped creme upon these good times is the final field day of graduation in June.
