Teachers have an often thankless job, but they are occasionally re¬ minded that they bestow upon their students in¬ valuable knowledge which will be depended upon in future years as these students move into adult¬ hood. Administrators typically hold a bad guy label during the performance of their duties, and few people recognize or appreciate their efforts to demand the best of each student enrolled in BHS. The teaching staff members are rarely visualized past their desks and chalkboards unless the teach¬ er coaches a sport or sponsors an organization. Many of Broadway ' s educators are accomplished crafters, musicians, athletes, and community leaders. Their hobbies do extend beyond grading papers and writing time slips. Too many times students forget that the entire staff works at BHS for the benefit of the students. This list is not only limited to the faculty but also includes the custodial staff, cafeteria workers, secretaries, and aides. So, to the BHS staff, whose “thank-you” might have been forgotten, we say thanks. “The Buck Stops Here’’ Mr. Sprinkel and senior attendants greet students attending the homecoming dance. Mr. James C. These stu¬ dents’ reign and seniority over at John C. Myers is soon counterattacked by their being the babes once again. The October Homecoming float is the class ' first attempt to work together, but in class this togetherness is shattered for the first time by intermingling upperclassmen with underclassmen. Uncertainty abounds and is obvious by the scared silence of the ninth grade bleachers during the cheerleaders ' roll call. It is hard to be outspoken, though, when their identity is questioned by their being labeled Natalie ' s little sister or Rob ' s baby brother. Sophomore life is much easier. Teachers have learned more names, and there is a younger class following tenth graders. Throughout the last year of required health and physical education new mini¬ classes are part of the curriculum. Hunter Safety is learned, and Drivers ' Ed and Sex Ed help every¬ one to learn all the things he she ever wanted to know. Classes are advancing to high levels of diffi¬ culty, but students are over freshman fright and are getting more involved. A junior ' s year is a busy year. Eleventh graders are finally considered upperclassme n, meaning ju¬ nior varsity players can be varsity, most students have job eligibility, and MVTC classes accept two- year enrollees. PSATs begin to prepare college- bound pupils, and as each person reaches sixteen, he or she is eligible for a driver’s license. Juniors feel as if they are constantly organizing, exercising, or thinking of ideas for fundraisers, and they usual¬ ly are. A main event of the year is providing and going to the Junior-Senior Prom after which there are only a few days before juniors can be labeled seniors. For some students their senior year is the shortest; for others, the longest. Serious thoughts enter twelfth-grade minds as they scramble to improve SAT scores and meet college application deadlines. Many pupils work part-time or full-time while trying to attain all of the required credits and make-up classes before June. Inter¬ mingled among these headaches are senior priv¬ ileges to take advantage of and look forward to. Honor students are masters on slave day; seniors can be first through the lunch line, attend the ban¬ quet, go on government field trips, get yearbooks first, be entitled to a motto, flower, and colors, and have the prom presented in their honor. Getting an education while collecting four years worth of memories is like having the cake and eat¬ ing it too, and the whipped creme upon these good times is the final field day of graduation in June. Somehow Beatriz Eugenia Constain, known to most BHS stu¬ dents as Betty, always manages a friendly smile. She is an exchange student from Cali, Colombia, and is being hosted by Gwen Roller and family. She has already learned much about the American way of life after living on the Rollers’ dairy farm. She describes her stay as different but a good experience.” Her new rural environment contrasts sharply with her family’s mod¬ ern apartment in Cali, a city of two million people. When asked what her favorite American food is, she smiles and says, without hesitation, Milkshakes. She also has ac¬ quired an American music taste for Air Supply. Betty is quickly learning how American entertainment dents the pocketbook, since she compares prices to paying only one dollar for both a movie and munchies with her friends in Colombia. When it comes to school, however, Betty believes that students in the U.S. have it easy. In Colombia she attended a Catholic school where her day began at B: CO a. m. and included fourteen subjects, not five or six. Betty has adjusted very well to life in the U.S. Her well- rounded, friendly personality is an asset to B. H. S. When asked if she is glad she decided to be an exchange student, she pleasantly smiles and responds with a Si.” Patrick Albert Hahn Singers Glen, Va. Mr. G Mrs. Richard G. Doug Good did not forget it and is now the senior with the most seniority in the graduating class of 1 9S5. First set to receive his diploma in 1 9?5, he dropped out of Broadway High during the final semester of his senior year. Doug knew he was not going to be able to graduate, so he quit. A quitter, however, is exactly what Doug is not. He had never failed before, but throughout the 1 974-75 school year he worked a late job which took away from homework and sleep time and conse¬ quently lowered his grades. The decade between his senior years Doug worked at various jobs. He was too frustrated to return to BHS for the 1 975-7B school year, and after not going back one year, it was easier to keep putting it off. He had convinced himself that he did not need his education, but he soon found out he was wrong. Doug had been thinking for a while about going back to school, but this is the first year he “got the nerve to do it.” Needing only 2’ a credits to graduate, he returned to BHS last summer to take government. With the support of family and friends he enrolled as a senior taking algebra and adding English literature to his schedule second semester. For now Doug works in the Emergency Room at Rockingham Memorial Hospital and hopes to become an x-ray technician. He plans to begin his training by joining the Air Force in September Cfor which he needs his diploma], It was rough at first, says Doug. He noticed that things have changed at Broadway. He thinks the students are a lot more brave and open about what they say and whom they say it to. He feels respect for fellow students, though, and that impresses him. Now he says he feels like a senior again and fits in. We think so too! Lorie Lynn Miller Broadway, Va. Mr. Mrs. Frederick Miller Jr. 5 06 67 Lynwood Matthew Miller II Fulks Run, Va. These three Japanese words seem to sum up the total martial arts experience. Senior Scott Leake has been involved in the Halterman Institute Karate pro¬ gram since tenth grade. He felt that he was no good in other sports and that Karate seemed to be something at which he could excel. He has already acquired his blue belt and needs six more belts to reach his goal of black belt. Scott competes in Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Virginia. He has placed in many events and enjoys the challenge of fighting other blue belts. He says it’s hard to practice four days each week to be prepared for these contests. With Scott, school work always comes first. He feels that his Karate rarely interferes with his studies, but when it does, he will stay out of practice to catch up on homework. He says, Those who become obsessed with it might have a hard time deciding between Karate practice and homework. ” Scott ' s future goal is to someday open his own Karate school. He, of course, would be the sensei (master]. First, though, he has to get his black belt, and that day is far away. Says Scott, I ' ve been a blue belt since May, and I ' ve been waiting to test for the green belt it seems like forever. B9 “We show our diverse interests by joining” Sometimes school clubs are as informative to students as their classes, if not more. Organiza¬ tions that concentrate on specific areas allow stu¬ dents to develop their special interests construc¬ tively and can be perfect preparation for a stu¬ dent ' s future. Every club that covers a subject directly related to a course at Broadway High is given class time to meet on a planned “Club Day” once a month. These co-curricular clubs deal with all areas from agriculture to business, academics to industrial arts, home economics to languages, government to employment, and science to music. Non-curricular organizations, too, meet and stress areas of interest to the students. Academ¬ ic trivia quizzing, Christian life, drama, and year¬ book are not directly related to a class within the school, yet students are involved. School time is not sacrificed for their meetings; therefore they are held out of class hours, but school grounds and facilities are available. Also, more advanced in training than school clubs, the Massanutten Voca¬ tional Technical Center provides students with specified job awareness and skill. These students attend BHS only two or three periods per day and attend MVTC either in the morning or afternoon. Juniors and sometimes sophomores are eligible for Vo Tech. This option is for those who make early vocational career decisions. Involvement in some type of club or organization can improve an individual ' s outlook on school in¬ credibly. With so many of these activities to choose from there is certainly one for every student ' s in¬ terests. Student Council Association Upparclasaman: T. Berrix, C. Boi¬ ler, L. Dellinger, T. The transition from midget leagues, farm teams, pony leagues, and Pepsi-cola tennis les¬ sons to intramurals and eighth-grade sports is a big step for maturing athletes. Once at Broadway High, athletic students are encouraged to join a junior varsity team or squad in order to prepare for varsity competition. Athletes require conditioned bodies and minds that are built from their prepara¬ tion. BHS sports kicked off a championship fall with varsity and j. v. football, cross country, varsity and j.v. girls’ basketball, and fall cheerleading. The win¬ ter drifted into the varisty and j.v. seasonal boys’ basketball, girls’ volleyball, and winter cheerleading. Spring bloomed baseball, softball, tennis, and track. Other seasonal sports-minded individuals are the coaches, managers, spotters, and stat¬ isticians, who are too often forgotten. Also, while few athletes last all three seasons, athletic train¬ ers must. The requirements of competing, showing good sportsmanship, working as a team, and giving 1 ID per cent learned by an athlete are the same rules to follow through the plays of life. Team: Captains, W. Again the 1 904 basketball season in terms of wins and losses could appear as somewhat of a disappoint¬ ment. This yean, however, the varsity record was improved by three wins. They key to the basketball team’s success in the future is a lot of hard work during the off-season and the desire to stay with the sport all four years. says Coach Carrie Shull. More importantly, though, the athletes have learned that a team does not have to win every game played, and the relationships made with teammates as well as other athletes are the experiences worth remembering long past high school. The girls’ varsity basketball chang¬ ing season is explained by the bits of spring, summer, fall and winter each athlete experiences during the course of a single basketball season. At times moods vary from up, down, good and okay, but each member manages to grow and learn many valuable lessons. Those one-time events such as prom, homecoming, Valentine ' s, drama productions, trips, banquets, and special honors won are extra-special and outshine the dai¬ ly happenings in the checkered halls of Broadway High. The four years of memorable moments cre¬ ate a series of mind treasures always to be consi¬ dered some of the best of times. The people, however, are what make high school activities so memorable. Those who took the first bow, those who were crowned, those who made it happen, and those who were there all give meaning to the mem¬ ories. .. isiiaws ipi«ii ... 141 “We Love a Parade’’ Juniors take first place in float competition with their portable Greek festival. The school depends on this extended community as it takes advantage of its residents ' support. Business owners display post¬ ers, purchase advertisements, and employ or rec¬ ommend students. Fans come to events, buy organizational fundraisers in the form of candy, posters, candles and T-shirts. Others educate the students or simply believe in them.
