“So if you go from nowhere on the road to somewhere . . . Broadway High School Broadway, Virginia Volume 28 2 3 Sometime in the 1800’s In the hills of Colorado an old prospector plucked from 8i stream an abandoned baby girl in a basket. He cared for her and she grew up to be a tomboy who married a mm who was also a prospector. They discovered a silver mins that proved to be one of the richest mother lodes of silver aver found in the West. Being very „ wealthy, the couple decided to leave their mountain cabin and invade the society of Denver. . . 4 Beeaus© ©f her background the elite Denver society rejected them, and they were very lonely and depressed. T© forget their unhappiness they decided to tour Europe. The husband returned first, and Molly booked passage on the maiden voyage of the Titanic; she was one of the few survivors. Denver society welcomed her as a heroine. She became known as . . . The Unsinkable Molly Brown l 5 Sometime in the early 1950’s a new high school was built in Broadway, Virginia. Through the years the school acquired a two-fold reputation, one as a fearsome opponent in sports, especially football and basketball. There were championships won in these sports as well as in others, “mother lodes’’of a sort. The other part of Broadway’s reputation went something to the effect of “those farmers from Broadway.’’ Because of its size Broadway eventually had to move into the Valley District, a select society of mostly city schools. Just as Molly Brown was unfairly judged by her background, Broadway began to be judged by its sports teams, which were having a tough time competing in the new district. There were new lows for a once proud school. School spirit all but disappeared. The most frequently asked question became, “What’s wrong with Broadway?” This led to everyone’s believing that something was really wrong. 7 Well, just as Molly Brown survived the Titanic’s sinking, Broadway High has survived its own sinking spirits; and just as Molly Brown sang in her darkest moment s to boost her spirits, Broadway High sings with her these words: Setups: ® 0 ■ § - “: $5 r ‘ ‘ S$S? rf p5 r ' • • ■ ' ..; ::y- ■ ' ■■• -..
