The coaches (head coach, Tom Allebaugh and assistant coaches Joe Jones, Jerry Fawley and Richard Boyd) have all helped to make this football season a splendid success. They encouraged the team when the going was rough and usually cited a good effort on everyone ' s part when the team won. The last game of the season was a pleasant surprise (to say the least) for the Cobblers, who enjoyed both the 32-0 pasting of the Knights and making the pollsters ' predictions go down the drain. To summarize the game in one sentence, the Gobblers did almost nothing wrong while the Knights did almost nothing right. All in all, it probably was Broadway ' s most spectacular win of the season. The bench share in the anxiety of a close game. 86 Richard Robinson makes a sweep around the end in the homecoming game. We want a touchdown, we want a touchdown! Robinson pulls away while Johnny Wampler does a quarterback sneak. Giant Killers 1973 Kent Knupp displays his excellent rebounding ability. Johnny Wampler goes in for a layup against Lexington. Dale Showalter, Manager. 88 Wayne Tinnell goes up the floor. Mr. Joe Jones, Coach. Tom Hotchkiss, Cordy Tinnell, Wayne Tinnell, John Wampler, Kent Knupp, Lane Turner, Doug Sharpes, Steve McCready, Tim Proctor, Manager, Fred Wean, Richard Robinson, Terry Hulvey, Jeff Holsinger, and Dwight Arbogast, Manager. 89 The Gobblerette Champions: Susan Derrow, Gail Southard, Cathy Crist, Susan Billhimer, Jeannie Miller, Cathie Stivers, Mari Lou Moore, Bonnie St awderman, Cay Craun, Denise Cullers, Freda Miller, Sue Claytor, absent. Girls ' Basketball The confidence of winning can be seen in the carefree bench atmosphere. 90 J.V. Girls: Ellen Thompson, Jane Reid, Michele Reed, Marlene Rhodes, Joan Glick, Valerie Wenger, Janet Stivers, Debbie Mason, Zola Burkholder, Sharon Hostetler, Sue Kyger, Paula Showalter. Northwestern Sectional Champions! The Girls ' Varsity team has the honor of being the first Northwes¬ tern Virginia Champions. Their season record was 14-1. Congratu¬ lations, girls! Managers: Pam Ryalls, Karey Roadcap, Lenora Yutzy, Cynthia Cline: Gail Southard rebounds; Mari Lou Moore shoots. 91 J.V. ' S . . . Mari Lou Moore, a consistent competitor. Mari Lou Moore, a senior, is a runner and jumper. Although there are no of¬ ficial records kept, Mari Lou undoubt¬ edly holds the school ' s records in the 440 and long jump. She has jumped 17 feet, 3 inches in the running long jump at one meet but has not repeated it. In the 1972 DGWS State Track and Field Meet Mari Lou placed third in the 440 yard dash. For someone who really does not like to run all that much this is quite an accomplishment! For all the recognition that she has brought to girls ' athletics here at Broadway, and for the personal honors she deserves, a thank-you seems inadequate. 98 Varsity Cheerleaders: Lori Smith, Melinda Turner, Captain, joy Simmers, Carol Holm, Margaret Glick, Helen Crider, Sharon Delawder, Donna Ray. At NCA Cheerleading camp at Ferrum College this past summer the Varsity Cheerleaders won four blue ribbons, two spirit sticks, the Outstanding Squad Award and the Golden Eagle Na¬ tional Cheerleader Award. James Taylor is the same, but his music has become more complex and, in this case, more beautiful. More background vocals have been added, the stereo mixing is fabulous and, as a surprise to me, a lot of brass has been used on a few of the tracks. This much brass is something new for James Taylor ' s albums, but it is not overworked and is used at exactly the right times. This has got to be the best album I have gotten this year. Of course, this is only my preference. You may dislike James Taylor ' s music very much, but for that I am sorry. I know this sound corny, but as re read and we were told ' xpected of us, we each ud that we were picked, ling to be honored, no for. It may not be the awards dinner or being named piayer of the week, but its a start. What can one say about a group of crazy kids and one not-so-crazy who get together to put on a three-act comedy? Only that the kids obviously members of the Eli Drama Club, the director is obviously Mr. Smith and the play is obviously If A Man Answers. Approximately two months ago when tryouts were over and casting pleted, Mr. Smith knowing what he was in for had his chance to back but he stuck with it, and none of the multitude involved in the production play will ever regret his decision. Any person who has never been involved in the production of a play, ially a three-act comedy, has no idea what he has missed. A typical rsal runs as this: Places! Quiet backstage! and Yes, white roses are so romantic! No, no, no, no! Try it again! Okay, Yes, white roses are so romantic. No, Try it again-and get it right! Yes, white roses are so-o-o-o-o-o romantic!!! igles and hyysterical laughter. And so it goes. There are the headaches and discouragements and nents when there is nothing left to do but throw one ' s hands into the in despair. Lines are forgotten and cues misplayed. There is the goblin skips merrily from one side of the stage to the other, pouncing on any props that just happen to be lying around (This has got to be the only lanation for those many missing props). Mass hysteria is created when le members of the cast discover that their dressing room has become make-up room. Oh, what a mess, but the show must go on. Then as the curtain rises, pieces fall into place and everything begins to function smoothly. With the final burst of applause all of the hard work, effort and anxiety suddenly become very much worthwhile. 119 Forensics Club and Junior Drama Club The Forenics Club and their advisers, Mrs. Joy Clougherty and Mrs. Kathryn Missildine, absent from picture.
