Faculty 23 They are our teachers and our friends. The teachers, overworked and often unappreciated, still assume the infinite task of molding minds. Rushing through classes, burdened with paper work, they mana ge to find time to counsel students individually, take an interest in school activities, and most of all, to care about us. Through their work, a student learns to reason and think for himself, to know and desire more knowledge. He learns to formulate new ideas and sometimes reject the old, accepted views for the new. Often a teacher ' s efforts seem to be unfulfilled, but then he sees an eye light up, a smile, and he realizes a mind has been reached. At that moment, the teacher has achieved his goal. 24 Faculty Mrs. Betty Allebaugh, Economics, U.S. History; Mr. George Hadley, English 9, World History; Miss Nancy Boiler, Physical Education 10, Science 9; Mrs. Betty Strother, Bookkeeping, Typing I; Mr. John Kidd, U. Outstretched fingers reach for it as the thunder of pursuers becomes steadily louder. Nestled in an armpit, it is carried on a dodging, twisting path toward the goal. Suddenly a solid wall of the enemy appears. The air vibrates with the sound of clashing pads striking the earth. There, on the ground under it all, lies the football. These are familiar sights and sounds for the members of Broadway ' s football team. They play with the football wet from rain, slippery from mud and icy from cold. The team fights hard and it fights well, this year ending the season with a respectable 6-4 record. Long, hard hours of practice under the guidance and watchful eyes of Head Coach Tom Allebaugh and assistant coaches Jerry Fawley, Mike Hensley, and Joseph Jones result in the work and effort evident during those games. Behind the scenes of a football game, managers Vince Whitmore, David Presgraves, Junior Thompson and Karol Messick handle the thousand tiny details that are a part of each game. After a week of practice and drill comes Friday night. The emotions of a football game vibrate through the cheering crowd as the team thunders onto the field. They line up for the kickoff and all the pre-game excite¬ ment, anticipation, anger and frustration disappear as the line of players moves toward the ball. The dull thud of the kickoff signals an echoing cheer from the crowd as once again, the elusive football flies through the air. 98 Varsity Football Broadway Gobblers—1970 Varsity Football 99 The Cobblers, soaring higher! On bar: David Kyger, Ronnie Branner. Standing: David Reedy, Mike Wean, Olen Burkholder, Jimmy Rohrer, Tommy Freeman. Kneeling: Johnny Wampler, Steve Trumbo, Charlie Shank, Steve Beard. Gobbler managers, or clowns: Vince Whitmore, Charlie Clutteur, and sleepy David Presgraves. The tense silence in the gym erupts into a deafening roar as the ball swishes through the basket. The crowd jumps to its feet, the scoreboard clicks, and the Gobblers surge ahead. Hours of practice and drill, unseen by the crowd, result in the smooth team effort evident during games. Team effort and student spirit make games exciting and rewarding. Action means Varsity Basketball 100 Varsity Basketball mw - % ; ff jpg ’ mm ■ 1 -v.
