BUSINESS Mrs. Betty Anne Strother An everyday sound heard coming from the business depart¬ ment is the peck peck of typewriters or the familiar voice of the shorthand teacher dictating business letters to future stenographers. The bookkeeping classes actually keep a set of books for a given firm for a certain period of time. Cozetta Johnson puts a dictaphone to work in Typing II.

)EPARTMENT Biology classes explore the insides of or¬ ganisms. Broadway High School offers a variety of science courses. A student first takes general science, in which he gains a general knowledge about many sciences. Through general science he determines whether or not he wants to study a more advanced branch of science. He next takes biology, the study of plants and animals. He concludes his years at Broadway with either chem¬ istry, which deals with the composition of substances, or physics, which deals with the states and properties of matter and energy. Dennis Turner prepares hydrochloric acid for Mrs. Ridings ' science class. Chemistry students apply their knowledge in the lab. 15

ART Mrs. Billie Campbell, hired to replace Mrs. Coffman who re¬ tired at the end of the first semester after forty years of teaching, gives her art classes a lesson in clay working. Mrs. Bernice Coffman Art deepens the appreciation of beauty. Students develop their talent and creativity. They do pencil sketches of various kinds, and use water colors and oil for their paintings. They learn to weave rugs, and carve objects from soap and wood. DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION Mr. William Butcher Distributive Education students attend school only until noon; for the remainder of the day most of the students have jobs on which they apply what they have learned in class. They study various retail problems: salesmanship, advertising, store operations, and stock control. Robert Donovan on the job at the Sinclair Station in Har¬ risonburg. 17
