THE ORIGIN OF OUR SEAL Our seal was designed and drawn by Marvin Turner, a graduate of the Class of 1955. The four ideas, CHARACTER, LOYALTY, SCHOLARSHIP, and ACHIEVEMENT were suggested by the points of emphases in Mr. Hill- yard ' s first address in the auditorium soon after the new school opened in 1952. OUR PURPOSE We, the staff of Memories 1965, have interpreted a year of school life at Broadway High as it is reflected in the four aspects of the seal. CHARACTER At Broadway High School, we are trying to create an environment which will encourage strength of character. This attempt is based on the conviction that knowledge alone is not sufficient preparation for life: learning must be supple¬ mented by strong character. Evidence of this aim is seen throughout the school, not only in the familiar framed proverbs which hang in the halls, but also in less tangible things. We can hear evidence of the aim in student conversations; we can see glimpses of the aim in the students ' conduct in classes, the hall or at a game. We can conclude by the students ' respect for their teachers and their participation in student government that they are affected by this aim. The ideal is revealed again at lunch, when the whole cafeteria is quiet for a moment and all heads are bowed for grace. In fact, all school activities are designed to help the student discover and develop the strength of character and the spiritual values needed for a happy, productive life. Andra Donson, president of the Student Council, and Hollis, vice-president, con¬ duct the first assembly of the session. Topic: The Challenge of Character Development. 4
