The four ideas, CHARACTER, LOYALTY, SCHOLARSHIP, and ACHIEVEMENT were suggested by the points of emphases in Mr. Hill- yard ' s first address in the auditorium soon after the new school opened in 1952. OUR PURPOSE We, the staff of Memories 1965, have interpreted a year of school life at Broadway High as it is reflected in the four aspects of the seal. CONTENTS TEACHERS AT WORK 8 CLASSES ON ROLL 32 ORGANIZATIONS WITH A PURPOSE 74 TEAMS IN ACTION 90 STUDENTS IN AND OUT OF CLASS 102 OUR COMMUNITY IN SUPPORT 117 CHARACTER At Broadway High School, we are trying to create an environment which will encourage strength of character. This attempt is based on the conviction that knowledge alone is not sufficient preparation for life: learning must be supple¬ mented by strong character. Evidence of this aim is seen throughout the school, not only in the familiar framed proverbs which hang in the halls, but also in less tangible things. We can hear evidence of the aim in student conversations; we can see glimpses of the aim in the students ' conduct in classes, the hall or at a game. We can conclude by the students ' respect for their teachers and their participation in student government that they are affected by this aim. The ideal is revealed again at lunch, when the whole cafeteria is quiet for a moment and all heads are bowed for grace. In fact, all school activities are designed to help the student discover and develop the strength of character and the spiritual values needed for a happy, productive life. Andra Donson, president of the Student Council, and Hollis, vice-president, con¬ duct the first assembly of the session. Topic: The Challenge of Character Development. 4 LOYALTY Loyalty is cheering for the Gobblers even when they are los¬ ing. Loyalty is helping to clean the gym after a party. Loyalty is faithfully attending practice or rehearsal when one would much rather have a date. Loyalty is wrapping crepe paper streamers around the goal posts on a freezing, wet, blustery Saturday morn¬ ing. Loyalty is staying on the job long after everyone else has quit. Loyalty is protecting a friend when he is not present. Loyalty is conducting oneself at all times, in all places, as though he is proud to be a student at Broadway High School. Our flag flies at half mast honoring former President Herbert Hoover. 1 We want a touchdown! . . . We just got it! 5 asm SCHOLARSHIP The learning process does not occur automatically; rather, it requires the student to work and to work hard. For him to realize the opportunity for and challenge of the learning offered here, the student must be diligent and enthusi¬ astic in his studies. He must be constantly aware that patience and perfection are partners. Making good grades and being on the honor roll are two of the products of deliberate study, but they are transient. A real and lasting reward of scholarship is the ability to think - critically, creatively, and independently, and the art of expressing one ' s thoughts truly and accurately. This ability in turn stimulates a love of learning for its own sake, and results in a fuller, deeper, more meaningful life. The thoughts expressed are epitomized in two excellent students: Judy Kay Smith and Carolyn Strawderman. ACHIEVEMENT With all achievement comes responsibility. The ninth grader who has earned the privilege to attend Broadway High School has the responsibility to make the best of his high school career. The player who makes the team must resolve to play with all his might. Graduation is the culminating achievement of the high school experience. The greatest satisfaction in life comes from one ' s pride in his achievements. Diploma . . . Achievement . . . Responsibility Graduate Larry Whetzel TEACHERS AT WORK mmm. IN THE OFFICE Mrs. Betty Harrison, secretary, helps every¬ one efficiently and pleasantly. Mr. Hillyard gives personal attention to stu¬ dents and advises them wisely. 10 THE PRINCIPAL MR. J. FRANK HILLYARD One ' s educational progress cannot be judged by testing his intellectual development alone. If we want to know whether one is truly educated, we should inquire first about his character and second about his manners. Evidence of intellectual performance should come third. Too little stress has been placed upon desirability of sound character and pleasing manners. Industry and intellect are important enough but it is not enough that an engine be powerful and well fueled. If it is driven the wrong way it may become an instrument of destruction. The most common cause for discharging employees is deficiency in character traits, rather than a lack of spe¬ cific skills in academic subjects. Some of the most common deficient character traits are non-cooperation, careless¬ ness, laziness, lack of ambition, dishonesty, and lack of courtesy. There will always be a place for young people of quality and high school offers the finest opportunity to develop desirable attitudes. . . . Creating this annual has been quite an under¬ taking, accomplished mainly by perseverance and devotion to duty. There are those who maintain that a good annual staff must have the ethical and moral standards of a saint, the strength of a mule, and the patience of Job. This fact became more evident to us each day. Nevertheless, this work does have many happy aspects. We sincerely hope that this happiness will be reflected in our book, now your book, the Memories ' 1 965. The school year of 1964—1965 began with all the usual excitement of new classes, new teachers, new customs. We students quickly reverted to our old in¬ school habits. Lockers were soon filled with our own special paraphernalia — books, sweaters, Beatle pin-ups, and Goldwater or Johnson stickers. Hall conversations and meetings of the much revered radiator clubs resumed discussion of the same topics — games, hunting, girls, etc. —that have been discussed in radiator huddles for years. We heartily greeted those friends we had rarely seen in the summer. With classes came the usual gauntlet of elation, enthusiasm, boredom, or indifference. We reconciled ourselves to the fact that tests and homework were a necessary evil of becoming educated. Cracking the books on the dining room table demands will power and mastery of all distractions. We soon became accustomed to the new bus routes and schedules which came about because of the new John C. Myers School across the hill. As the months passed, we became more and more caught up in school activities: the practices, the meetings, the pep rallies, the dances, the food sales and car washes, the initiations, the plays, and the games. These are the things that make life at Broad¬ way High School what it is! Whaddya do Saturday night? Don ' t you think that might work even better? Science Club lead¬ ers: Carl Grimm, Gilbert Sager, Bitty AAcCorkle, Clark Lohr, James Saulton, Andra Donson, and Alice Ann Whitmore make plans for future club projects in a pre¬ school meeting. 104 THE MAGAZINE CAMPAIGN Judy Kay Smith and Larry Whetzel were business managers of the 1964 Magazine Campaign. Booster Manager was Sarona Minnick. Sales amounted to $1,604.55. The $25. Savings Bond was won by Paul Andes in the Mystery Student drawing. Sarona Minnick, high salesman for the entire school, poses with one of her prizes, a stuffed dachshund autograph dog. THE ROCKINGHAM INDUSTRIAL FAIR Three bus loads of eager seniors willingly left classes behind and joined seniors from other high schools to attend the Rockingham — Harrisonburg Indus¬ trial Show at the Fair Grounds. The exhibits were quite interesting and in¬ formative, and numerous souvenirs were collected. The stadium was filled with seniors and chaperones. Among the dignitaries were Senator George S. Aldhizer, Sup ' t. Wilbur S. Pence, and members of the Chamber of Commerce. Lieutenant-Governor Mills Godwin spoke on voca¬ tional opportunities in Virginia to a captive, shivering audience. AMERICAN EDUCATION WEEK American Education Week was observed in a slightly different way this year. The parents followed their children ' s class schedules, actually attended classes, and moved through the building with the bells, as the students do. The teachers made short talks to the parents about the aims of their respective courses, and were available for individual conferences after the mock school day ended. 1964 Theme: Education Pays Dividends “Oh yes, that ' s right down the hall and to your left. At the present, we are studying triangles and learning to prove congruence between them. Mr. Daniel Myers explains a geometry chart to an inter¬ ested class of parents. 106 D.E. Demerits were given during the day for things such as singing on key, having Goldwater stickers, and making signs too neatly. Waiting on old members, eating standing up, and wearing dunce caps made lunch an agony. The evening ' s activities consisted of being instructed to scrub the front steps (with a toothbrush), to trim two trees, and to find the way to the cafeteria blindfolded. The eventful day was brought to a close with the selection of Miss Eli, Jim Saulton, and a solemn candlelighting and pledge¬ making ceremony. Frankenstein, Jack Wenger, and Uncle Remus, Wylie Walton, scrub dem steps. We must choose which way to go at the cross roads , either to continue in our education or to begin our life ' s profession. Whichever we may choose, our diploma will be of great value to us. After we graduate it is easy to realize the many things we should have done, so work hard and accomplish as much as possible.
