Presenting the fourth edition ... BROADWAY HIGH SCHOOL THE 1956 MEMORIES Foreword As we seniors go forward We pause for a irtoment to Renew our determination for attaining Our goal—and even as we pause We see opportunity bidding us come. And though we go forward Our hearts and minds turn once more To the hours spent at Broadway High. Good hours, all— Pleasant hours filled with the Dearest of memories. Hours well worth our while: In which we achieved a goal In which a character was molded In which the value of loyalty was found In which scholarship was realized. Hours which we shall never forget For they are a part of us. 4 Mr. J. Frank Hillyard, PRINCIPAL Principal ' s Message A vast number of men and women who are really capable of doing great things do small things and live mediocre lives because they do not expect or demand enough of themselves. We fail to see that we can control our own destiny, make ourselves do whatever is possible, and make ourselves become whatever we long to be. There is something in the atmosphere in the presence of a man who believes that he is going to win out—something in his appearance that wins half the battle before a blow is struck. The miracles of civilization have been performed by men and women of great self-confidence, who had unwavering faith in their power to accomplish the tasks they undertook. If I were to give but one word of advice, it wbuld be this: Believe in yourself with all your might.” That is, believe that there is a power within you which if awak¬ ened, aroused, developed, and matched with honest effort will not only make a noble man or woman of you but will also make you successful and happy. 5 Table of Contents Faculty Seniors Underclassmen Activities Athletics School Life Page 7 Page 11 Page 27 Page 47 Page 63 Page 71 6 fV- MARY STUART BELL M. Cheerleaders SPONSORED BY Hilltop Hatchery The days grew colder The leaves began to turn We knew that Time for school was Here once again. And as we came, We realized that each Class had stepped one Rung higher on the Ladder which leads to Graduation. Into Broadway s halls were Welcomed the Class of 1960, Who in the months ahead Were to learn to know and Love Broadway High and All for which she stands. As the weeks Progressed, we realized That each member of our Faculty was here, Not to dictate our actions But to guide them, And to help us Mold a life Which would honor God, Society, Ourselves. £ H Though they had Many worries and cares: Reports, registers, us; Our teachers were friendly Folks who enjoyed fun As much as did we. It may have taken a few weeks for us to Turn our minds from the chores of summer, But it took no time for our teachers to Impose upon us that most dreaded chore of winter— Homework. Who could forget Evaluation? And the magazine campaign Added even more excitement To the general atmosphere. 73 But we finally settled Down to our school work, Each studying in those subjects In which he was most interested. For some it was agriculture; For some, a field of science: The smell of formaldehyde, Or making NaCl, Or proving Theorm 108. For others, it was in the Realm of the fine arts. For all, our school work required Work Interest Ability. The drums Marked time The band was On the march 74 Excitement was in the air The yells for Broadway Rang clearer Football season was here. And all too soon, It had passed. But it had left pleasant memories Of some victories And many good times. Amid the cheers of football Were heard the strains Of Victor Herbert s BABES IN TOYLAND. 75 The days at Broadway High Never became dull or uninteresting: There were MEMORIES to he forever captured The Green Quill to be edited Songs to be sung Talent to be discovered. Beyond doubt, one of the Most popular spots around school Was the library. While the guidance department Was busy helping to Direct our choices For the present and the future. 76 Though we boasted A winning team And life was, in general, A happy experience At Broadway High, Old Man Winter blew in Gabby Gobbler’s feathers were oiled The bleachers were dusted Laryngitis was common Basketball season was here. Bundled up in three Most unpleasant days Were five kill-joys— Exams. HHHHi K Exams were over Life again resumed normal activity. Class parties added fun. Valentine Day came and went— Valentines walked the halls In pairs. Throughout the year Our cooks and janitors Made our school life More comfortable. 78 The breezes blew warm The air was fragrant Spring had come. And with it its Many activities: With the Spring came the close Of another school vear: ✓ A year which had been Most pleasant in every way. A year in which We had acquired knowledge Made new friends Enjoyed many good times. A year from which Will always linger memories: Happy memories Loyal memories Loving memories. 79 mmmm Finis As we, the Senior Class of 1955-1956, leave and travel down the Road of Life, we hope these pages will eariy many fond memories for you .of your school days at Broadway High School. 82 ADS Patronize those who have helped us publish our yearbook.
