O M Principalis Message .... Young men and women, who, during their years in school, leain to live pleasantly and thoughtfully and helpfully with others, who learn to make people with whom they live happy instead of worried or anxious, are finding their way to a life of satisfaction. Such individuals need not be, should not be, soft or meek or self-effacing. They may be forceful, self-assertive, provided they really live geneiously and harmoniously. They are the strong, the skilled, the artistic players in the great orchestra which includes us all. The world needs far more people who are skilled in the art of living. The Office Principal MR. I. As They Go Marching By— The pride of Rockingham County, Virginia, threw wide her doors to open the 1954-55 school session on September 7, with a record enrollment of 731 pupils. Joining the ranks of the B. H. S. faculty were Coach Bob (15-0) Tabor from Cumber¬ land, Maryland; Mrs. Patsy Vaughan of New Market, Virginia; Mrs. Catherine Miller and Miss Georgeanna Driver also of New Market; and the addition of Miss Margaret Mae Martz who came to us from Covington High School brought the magic number to 32. Gabby Gobbler enhanced Vol. Ill, No. 1 of the Green Quill by extending his hand of we l¬ come to the school’s new students—some 241 eighth graders. Coaches Hamilton and Tabor saw their charges open the ’54 Football Season with a 14-6 victory over Petersburg (W. Va.) High School. On successive Saturday afternoons James Wood High fell 19-6 and the Leemen of Staunton’s Robert E. Lee High were humbled 14-0. Coach Ward Long on seeing his Gobbler J. V.’s come from behind twice to whip James Wood’s Little Colonels 19-18 -— “They just wouldn’t give up.” So shall we always be. President Garth Kagey called the first meeting of the Broadway Lettermen’s Club on October 27 with the club electing to attend the U. Va. vs. West Virginia football game at Virginia’s Scott Stadium—little did they know that it would rain, sleet, and snow. Football season rolled on as the Gobblers met their first defeat at the hands of Clarke County High’s Eagles at Purcellville, as the Eagles came through with a desperation tally in the closing minutes of the game. Montevideo won out in the annual Cross County Game played at Har¬ risonburg 12-7 despite the efforts of the student body and the Gobbler Band in the pep rally. Len Riggleman smashed through for the last points of the ’54 season as he gave the B. H. S. eleven a 6-0 lead over Harrisonburg’s Blue Streaks only to see the visitors bounce back with a surpriser to knot the game at 6-all—the crowd waited in tension as their try for the e. p. was wide—just as ours had been—and so it ended. In basketball the Gobblers rode into the V. M. I. Fieldhouse at Lexington for the District 5 Tourney with a 10-6 record and the fifth posi¬ tion. Given little chance but lots of hope the Gobblers clipped Handley’s Judges in a 52-45 upset. Semi-final opposition became Montevideo’s Maroons who came through it all 65-44 and the Gobblers bounced back to win the Consolation championship going away—Broadway 70, Clif¬ ton Forge 54. Twin wins over Harrisonburg High highlight¬ ed the regular season as the Streaks were hum¬ bled 35-32 on their court and bowed 52-46 at B. H. S. Coach Tabor’s rampaging Junior Var¬ sity tramped through the District heads and shoulders above their opposition and made it 15-0 by beating James Wood 48-35 in the finale. The strains of “Mississippi Melody” under the directorship of Mr. Joe Miller pleased an enthusi¬ astic gathering on the nights of October 23 and 24. Co-Captains Mildred Wine and Shirley Mal- nar bade their farewells to B. H. S. basketball, along with the departing seniors on the squad, as they completed a successful 8-5 season. March was music month with the B. H. S. Band, Mixed Chorus, Glee Club, Melody Anns and 5 soloists representing Broadway well—as usual. March also found the Forensic Winners vie- ing for honors. Then, too, ELI was installed in March with enthusiastic response from the student body. A successful Baseball Season sweltered through as drama took the reins of prominence with the presentation of the Talent Shows, the Junior Play and the Senior Play. And in the end came Graduation and the solemnity of Commencement Exercises. It was a wonderful and an immensely successful year in all respects—To you Mr. Hillyard, our principal, our respect and deep appreciation for your guidance—To our Teachers and Friends, we shall never forget you—To the Seniors, Good Luck and Godspeed, we know that you could never forget one golden hour spent at B. H. S. —To those who remain to carry her Colors- Love her, Respect her, SHE’S A GRAND OLD SCHOOL WITH A BIG FUTURE. Champaign, Illinois Ya. Representative — JAMES L. DECK 300 East Main Street Richmond, Virginia Years of experience have taught us! Printing Pays Us Only When It Pays Yon! McClure Printing Company THE RUNNELS PRESS COLLEGE ANNUALS AND CATALOGS.FINE ADVERTISING PRINTING 19 West Frederick St. Phone 5-9312 Staunton, Virginia Sometimes it is the nature of a craft to create an unbreakable tie between itself and the worker in that field, a heart attachment equal to lifetime devotion. One familiar example is PRINTING. Once editor, once compositor, or press¬ man catches the spirit of the shop, the spell is seldom broken. Like the odor of a camp fire, or a whiff of salt air, the beloved tang of printer’s ink, symboli¬ cal of a great profession, gets into your heart and soul. School Annuals, Magazines, Newspapers and Special Printing, all smack of it. It is an invisible link that binds all intelligence together. It is the stimulus for creation in business or romance. This craftsmanship, this devotion to service and alert¬ ness to business needs, has nourished and developed an enormous industrial vitality, and whichever way the course of the future runs, the printer will always find himself able to adapt his helpfulness to new opportunity. iiiiisi ■ 1 : ' vi ri§i
