The over 300 young men and women of the class of '66 will be examples to the world of the Buccaneer spirit. This class is the product of the formative years of Broadmoor High, in wliich the spirit of the Buccaneer has been crystalized. This spirit will be inherited by future classes as the trademark of a Buccaneer. May the tradition be carried on with pride. 4 F Well, it’s opening day again . . . School hasn't changed much; where have these people been all summer? . . . There goes the bell; the halls get more crowded every year Hi Bill; hey Jimmy . . . Hello Susan, how was it out at . . . Have you heard the latest Bob Dylan record, Like a Rolling Stone? I managed to listen to all six minutes of it yesterday , . . I'm off to my home room ... Oh no. look who I've got third hour! . . . Bob, I heard Coach Gourrier moved to LSU this summer . . . Yea, we sure got a lot of different teachers this year. I hope this new group is as good as the old ones . . . Here's my new home room . . . Let’s see whether I can find a good desk . . . here is pretty good . . . H MM MM MM, a lot of new girls moved in during the summer . . . 6 I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America Now hear this . . . Oh, it’s starting the same way again . . . guess I'm really back . . . only 179 days, 5 hours, and 50 minutes left . . . there goes the bugle . . . Just think, these will probably be the only announcements I'll listen to for the rest of the year . . . 7 Sure has been a long two weeks, hasn’t it? . . . same old routine . . . yesterday I almost missed my bus . . . It's fun sometimes, but it's crowded . . . John, have you finished cleaning up your lawn after Betsy got through with it? . . . Yeah, they pulled off the last of the trash two days ago . . . But we didn't get any electricity till last night . . . Boy, everybody sure got drenched at the Catholic High game, didn't they . . . even the girls' good dresses got soaked . . . Jane, what are ya'll calling the latest style in clothes? . . . It’s English, of course, it's the Mod look. But we had to lengthen our skirts some, because of the School Board ruling ... I know what you mean; I had to get a haircut last week . . . 8 Had to find my teacher at the Club today . ... as soon as she gets free time, she goes to the lounge ... I don't see how they can stand it in there . . . Lunch time again . . . half the school must be on this shift . . . Hey, let me up in line, will ya? . . . Oh, oh, here comes Coach Jones . . . well, I wasn’t hungry anyway . . . Say, did you see who I thought I saw with you-know-who at recess? . . . Yeah, but wait till you hear what I saw . . . Wonder if I can afford the extra large ring? . . . What color stone are you getting? . . . What do you mean I filled the form out wrong!? We've got to win this game to stay in the competition for the district championship . . . We can't give up tonight ... Go Bucs, Go! . . . Docs it look to you like there are more in the band than in the bleachers? ... If it gets any bigger, they’ll have to move the cheerleaders out of the place . . . Boy, that band can really put on a half time show . . . They look like a college band out on the field . . . Here come the majorettes . . . They're dancing to The Girl From Ipanema” ... I feel out of place . . . there is nothing I can add to this school . . . I’m just not a part of it . . . You know, this place isn't so bad after you've had a while to get used to it . . . maybe someday I'll become a real Buccaneer . . . 12 Broadmoor, you are mine ... six years I've waited for this event . . . guess this place will never he the same again without this senior class ... in these six years we've made this school ... I think we did a pretty good job ... I hope the underclassmen take good care of this place . . . The Buccaneer tradition should be passed on to others as we've received it and added to it . . . Broadmoor, you are mine . . . and yet, I must leave . . . 13 19! . . . 30! . . . HIKE! . . . Oof!,Ugh!,oof, ugh.oog.ugh! . . . Wilky, ya didn't hit him hard enough! . . . Run it once more . . . one more time . . . again . . . Now HUSTLE! ! . . . They sure got a good band for this dance ... we worked ourselves out of our minds decorating this place; they’d better like these decorations . . . Man, that's a cool looking madras tie you’ve got . . . Have you noticed we’ve been jerking to this song for almost five minutes now? ... I don't think the chaperones understand our dancing .. . EDITOR'S COMMENT: This has been a picture of Broadmoor. The picture is not complete; you may feel it not even accurate. It is only a key to your memories -some sad, some funny - but hopefully all rewarding. The Broadmoor story and your memories have not ended; they have only begun . . . ■ . ■ 16 The faculty, consisting of fifty-four members, and its knowledge imparted to students are as important as any other part of school. Most of the forty-eight homeroom teachers are required to teach six hours a day. Consequently. they must spend long hours at home preparing and grading assignments and homework. Many times a student will hear adults referring to the idiosyncrasies of a particular teacher. Such things as grading methods, disciplinary actions and teaching methods are discussed witli laughter, sincerity and exclamations. These memorable facts are what will reconstruct our high school days. ADMINISTRA TION 17 Our principal, Mr. McLavy, was here before school opened the first year, and he has stayed through the years to become an essential part of our school's growing tradition. Wherever the alumni-of Broadmoor High School go, they will carry with them memories of Mr. Mac, who has helped to make Broadmoor the finest in the land. From his single action of enforcing school regulations to his announcing on the P.A. system, Mr. Mac is as much a part of Broadmoor as our spirit and our classes. Some assistant principals are merely shadows of the principal, but such is not the case with Mr. Bankston. He provides a true counterpart to our principal. Even as the average of their heights is a good height, the average of their personalities is an excellent personality. Mr. Bankston's annual pep talk before the Istrouma High game and his famous red socks add a certain quality to the spirit and personality of Broadmoor High School. These things will go with us as happy memories when we leave Broadmoor. Mr. Bankston works hard to keep our school a good one. Let's see, I know it's here somewhere . MR. It is a key which opens the door to a better position for us in our communities. The ability to speak and write correctly is never lost or forgotten as we grow older. It is an attainment which follows us throughout our lives. For this reason the Broadmoor English Department serves to instill in its students these abilities as tools for better communication in today's complex world. 22 Mrs. Avery explains corrections on a student's paper. No matter how many other subjects we might study, wc could not live in our modern world without some knowledge of mathematics. Mathematics lies at the foundation of virtually every business or occupation of any significance in the world. The foundation which the students of today receive in their schools will be the basis of tomorrow’s world. For this reason the Broadmoor Mathematics department strives to give its students the very best in a mathematical education. This education is acquired in the different math levels from General Math through the Algebras to Trigonometry. Coach Epperson gives a test in senior math. 25 MRS. Through the study of the languages, we develop a deeper insight into the world and its people. We understand more fully the different people and their ways of life. By learning the languages through speaking them, we realize their importance in our lives today and in our futures. Not only are our lives enriched by knowing the languages, but also are our points of view broadened. We learn to think about life in many different aspects. The things men are rarely find a place in our history unless it is in the arts. Perhaps none of the students in chorus, music, band or art courses will become famous for their artistic talents; but they have found a way of expressing themselves. They arc learned of art; and in their learning, they have exposed the rest of the school to beauty in its highest form. The Christmas Cantata, the band concerts, and the. annual art shows all help to round out life at Broadmoor. Three more rehearsals till spring festival. 33 I Because an important part of our nation’s future is based upon the physical fittness of its population, a new emphasis is being placed on the physical abilities of today’s youth. The Physical Education Department at Broadmoor High School provides activities which guide the students to better physical fittness and help them to maintain it. The achievement of better physical fittness is attained through invigorating exercise and enjoyable games. Thus the students become more physically equipped to handle the problems of tomorrow. MOLLY HIGHTOWER B.S., Louisiana State University; Home Economics I,II,III,IV Future Homemakers of America Through our vocational department, we have the opportunity to learn some of the basic skills that will help us in later life. The home economics department offers a variety of homemaking skills such as cooking, sewing, and interior decoration. Industrial arts and mechanical drawing help prepare the boys for their future jobs. By being able to learn these skills in high school, we are better qualified to face the outside world when we graduate. Broadmoor High School is the home ground for approximately 1200 Buccaneers. They study diligently, participate in club activities, support their community, spend money profusely, drive cars, and enjoy life to the fullest. On the surface it would seem that teenagers exist only to have fun. However, teenagers do much for which credit is not given. For instance, Broadmoor Buccaneers gave of their money to buy Christmas gifts for the needy, supported the March of Dimes and other worthy organizations, sent letters to soldiers in Viet Ham, and showed themselves to be responsible citizens of Baton Rouge. The beauty of the pretty girls and the success of those who excel are very much a part of tne story of Broadmoor. Such beauty and success stand as examples of the Buccaneer spirit and way of life. Tliese qualities show themselves in various ways: in a beauty pageant or in a club or class election. However, excellence can be found everywhere and anywhere on the Buccaneer campus, for excellence is the essence of Broadmoor. The girls re-appeared on stage In groups of fifteen to be viewed by the judges. Treasures of the Deep The judges for Broadmoor’s sixth annual beauty pageant were B. J. Vineyard, Mrs. Annabelle Armstrong, Tommy Fussell, Miss Lynn Taylor, and Murray Shores. The lights dimmed, the curtains opened, and the audience was transported to a subterranean world where silence and beauty were paramount and the surface winds were calmed. It was fitting that such a domain be ruled by the fairest within its realms. And so it was. Within four short hours five judges chose the Buccaneer Belle and her six sister treasures. Broadmoor High's sixth annual beauty pageant. Treasures of the Deep, held on January 22, 1966, was cosponsored by the Buccaneer Log and the Student Council. Paul Smith, coeditor of the Buccaneer Log, and Barry Phillips, representing the Student Council, escorted the girls. A staffer plans a whole section, and then the editor or sponsor changes it in a few moments. Pictures taken months before cannot be found on shipment day. They were never taken from the yearbook room; but if they were lost in the staff files, they might as well be in Timbuktu. People asked to wear suits for pictures either forgot the suits or didn't come at all. Staffers become frustrated, rushed, and finally as lost as the pictures. When the final shipment is sent to the publisher, frustrations end, and the staffers hopefully look forward to the day the yearbooks return in final form. Happiness sets in when the members introduce the new books at the school assembly in May. The reward of the work is the sense of great accomplishment and the blast we had putting out the effort. In recognition of the efforts of the staff, the Key Club awarded the staff the Most Active Club Award at their annual leadership banquet in February. They drill long hours after school to perfect their half-time shows and their pep rally presentations. Their leadership at pep rallies and games helps control our spirit. Girls must maintain an overall C academic average, receive recommendations from the faculty, and pass designated skill tests to become members. The members in turn must then maintain a C average to remain an active part of the group. Service activities for the year included ringing bells for the Volunteers of America in December and contributing to the CARE Program. To conclude the year, the group had a banquet to honor those members that had been outstanding in marching and in working for the school. After a year of diligent, dedicated work, the Buccarettes received formal recognition for their accomplishments when they were awarded honorable mention at the Key Club leadership banquet. The marching band gained much attention during football season, being one of the largest groups in the state, with one hundred twenty-five pieces strong. The band then was divided during concert season into three bands, the best of which was the wind ensemble. Much individual talent throughout the band was noted when Broadmoor placed the largest number of representatives in die All Parish Band. Also to be mentioned, the increasingly popular stage band won first place in competition against bands from three other states. Much of the success of the bands can be accredited to the leadership of Mr. Lee Fortier, himself an accomplished musician. The pep rallies and athletic events would not have been complete without their baton twirls, dance routines, and pretty smiles. The majorettes have given to the student body a bit of extra Buccaneer spirit. The eight girls, all members of the band, were selected by Mr. Fortier and Mr. William Swor, band director at L.S.U. The majorettes practiced often during the summer and are constantly creating new routines and working with the band. The students of Broadmoor are proud of the majorettes and are appreciative of the services these girls render the school. They left April 29 and returned on May 2. During this trip, the choir performed on the Little Rock television station and at the Little Rock Air Force Base.
