CAPTAINS LA J Every ship has its captain and its officers to lead the many crewmen to act with one will, with one purpose as it sails the-seas. The administration of Broadmoor High School--the principals, teachers, and other members of the staff--have fulfilled their duty at Broadmoor by successfully leading the students of Broadmoor in the common purposes of knowledge and maturity to prepare us for our own voyages through life. ISLAND N FRANK R. McLAVY PRINCIPAL Louisiana State University, B. S.; M. Ed. In order for a ship to cross the wide oceans, it must be guided by a strong, steady hand. Without its captain, the ship wallows in the waves, going nowhere. The same is tme of almost any high school. A dedicated man is needed to guide the policies of administration. The efficient governing of over 1100 students is an exhausting and often frustrating job. We are indeed fortunate to have such an able administrator at our helm. The Captains At No one man can captain a ship or run a school. Every leader needs a dependable assistant. Without such a helper, the chain of command bogs down under the tremendous amount of work to be done and the number of decisions to be made. Mr. Bankston fills the. post of assistant principal with strength and understanding, making him a component of the administration. The Helm MR. FRED BANKSTON ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Louisiana State University, B. S.; M. Ed. A variety of school activities depend on the untiring efforts of the faculty. MRS. MARIE MORRIS School Secretary Guidance Our guiding beacons, the rays of light in the darkness, are our guidance through the uncharted ports. The mapmaker, Mrs. Wasson carefully charts the fastest, easiest routes through the storms of life. No ship would be complete without the captain's assistant, Mrs. Morris, helping keep all parts in order and running smoothly. Mrs. Wasson helps Scott Rogillio plan his Senior schedule. MRS. MARY D. In order to understand other countries, a knowledge of their languages is essential both to tourists and to readers of their literature. Mr. Jones delivers untiring services of upkeeping the school by aiding teachers and helping students with dances and other school functions. The dieticians do a magnificent job of preparing lunches and seeing that the students are properly fed. Some bring their lunches; some enjoy the meals prepared in the school lunchroom. SLAVE .......... Our freshman year at Broadmoor was our first voyage on the sea of knowledge. We were young, and we saw the horizons of our world stretched out to the infinite. We saw strange ports and heard wild tales of even stranger places. In the sophomore year, the seas were rougher; but we were older and were determined to seek out the new lands and the far shores of World History and English II. In our junior year, no longer were we wandering without a course. The misty shapes of college years beckoned in the dawn. We began to set our course to the final port of call, eager yet uncertain. The mists cleared as our senior year passed by in our wake. The shore was sharply outlined in the radiance of our new adulthood, and we sailed ahead confidently. Treasures Of The Old South Treasures of the Old South was the theme of the fifth annual Broadmoor High School beauty pageant. Eighty-seven of the South's most beautiful girls were featured in the pageant, which was held on Friday, January 15, 1965. The girls represented the various clubs and homerooms which sponsored them. Mr. Malcolm Buhler, principal of the Foundation School, served as Emcee. Phil Ward, president of the Student Council, and Marcel Didier, assistant editor of the Buccaneer Log, escorted the girls on stage. The beauty pageant was co-sponsored by the Student Council and Buccaneer Log staff. Entertainment while the judges were deliberating was presented by talented students of BHS and by Miss Frances Avants, alumna of BHS. Junior division girls eagerly await their turns backstage. BA TTLE Life is a battle, as surely as pirates battle on the open sea. Lifetimes see competition, frustration, victory, and defeat. The popularity of sports depends on the parallel between the athletic contests and the conflicts, for many sports contests involved many of the aspects involved in battles on the high seas or in life. Thus, the intramural and varsity sports offered at Broadmoor coupled with the school scholastic program help to prepare fully the students for their adult lives. ISLAND MR. JERRY EPPERSON Head Coach Football ’64 Broadmoor ended an exciting and spirited 1964 season with a record of six wins and four losses. It was a season marked by glorious victories and heart-breaking defeats. The Buccaneers, through their fighting spirit and their persistent efforts, showed themselves to be a team to be reckoned with in the future. ROW I, A. Sanchez, P. R. Tollctt, Head. H. Richards. B. Lutcher gave the Bucs a hard fight, but Broadmoor managed to furnish the all-important scoring punch. Chaille Percy provided the touchdown on a two-yard run while Jesse Chelette kicked a fine 31-yard field goal. Bucs versus Catholic 21-7 Chaille Percy led the Bucs in ground-gaining as Broadmoor defeated the Catholic High Golden Bears at Memorial Stadium. Halfbacks Bubba Sanchez and Wayne Richmond also carried the ball to good effect. Jesse Chelette also kicked another field goal to add to the Buc score. It was Broadmoor's first district 3-AAA game and the second time in a row that the Bucs had beaten the Bears. The Broadmoor defensive team played well in what was mainly a defensive game, holding the Indians to 50 yards rushing and zero yards passing. Jesse Chelette was 4 for 10 passingwise for the game, throwing the ball for 44 yards total. Bucs versus Baton Rouge High 6-0 The Bucs bounced back from the defeat of the week before to defeat the Bulldogs, who were ranked top in the state. The score, however, was no indication of how well the Buccaneer team performed. Baton Rouge High's fine running game was well contained by the Buc defense. Led by Sydney Wilkinson and J. R. Templet, the Broadmoor defense held the Bulldogs to 43 yards total offense during the game. Bucs versus Glen Oaks 0-10 Broadmoor, playing at Wedge Keyes Stadium at Baker, lost to district leader Glen Oaks. The game was one of the closest of the year for Broadmoor as the Panthers had only a slim margin of three points until the final minutes of the game. The Bucs, though on the low end of the score, actually out-distanced the Glen Oaks team. The game was a fine exhibition of spirit, showing that the Bucs, although defeated, were not out of the running. B. Sanchez carries against Glen Oaks; Percy blocks, Bucs versus Baker 14-0 Playing for the second week at Wedge Keyes Si dium, Broadmoor defeated the Baker Buffaloes in district hall game. Both TD's in the game were made on runs by Chaille Percy from the two yard line. The first touchdown followed a 14 play, 80 yard scoring drive in the second period; and the second TD, in the fourth quarter, was set up by a recover)' of a tumble on the two by Carl Chelette. UPPER; Sanchez dodges as Jesse blocks a Baton Rouge High Player. LOWER: Wayne Richmond heads for open territory in the Lee High game as Anselino runs in to help the play. Bucs versus Redemptorist 0-3 Broadmoor, in a non-district game, lost to the Redemptorist Wolves at Memorial Stadium. Again the Bucs beat their opponent in ground-gaining but just could not score. Although the Redemptorist score came in the second quarter, the Bucs were not out of the game until its final seconds. The final Buccaneer scoring attempt was ended when Jesse Chelette's pass was intercepted with less than a minute remaining in the game. Bucs versus Hammond 35-13 The Bucs played a tremendous second half to beat the Hammond Tors at Strawberry Stadium in Hammond. Broadmoor started the game like a ball of fire, but the Tors fought back to make the score at half-time 14-13. However, in the second half, the Bucs held Hammond scoreless while making three TD’s themselves. Jesse Chelette completed 9 of 12 passes. Under the leadership of quarterback Randy Hudson, the Bucs gained 201 yards total offense to Denham Springs' 99. Bubba Sanchez, Wayne Richmond, and Chaille Percy carried the ball consistently; and Hudson threw a touchdown pass to Sidney Wilkinson. Bucs versus Bogalusa 13-20 It's hard to lose a homecoming game, as Broadmoor found out in the game against Bogalusa at Broadmoor Stadium. Although the Bucs were beaten decisively, the game was not without some fine Broadmoor efforts. Broadmoor's two scores came from two runs by Wayne Richmond, one of them a 76 yard interception jaunt. Gayle Sanchez, Bubba Greer, and Howell Andrews distinguished themselves on defense. UPPER: Percy breaks through the Catholic High line. LOWER: Richmond outruns a Bogalusa defender to go for a touchdown! Bucs versus Lee 13-6 In the final game of the year, Broadmoor defeated arch-rival Lee High at Memorial Stadium. The game was controlled by the Bucs from the opening kickoff. Broadmoor gained 282 yards to Lee's 199. All of Lee High's yardage came from passing, since the Rebels could not break through the Buc line. JV squad, ROW I: B. Evans, A. Richards, M. Caldwell, B. Sims, T. Harris, R. Tollett, 0. Denny, J. Broadmoor's junior teams both represented Broadmoor well in '64, as each squad finished the year with a winning record. The junior varsity ended the season with a 6-2-1 record. Most of these boys will be on the varsity team next year. The ninth grade team had an excellent 7-2 mark for the season. The squad's fine effort won it the championship of its district. There was no main speaker, as it was felt that a major speaker would detract from the banquet's purpose - to honor the football players for their fine representation of Broadmoor during the 1964 season. Chaille Percy received the Award for the Most Valuable Player, presented by the Student Council, while Jesse Chelette was awarded the Buc award, given by Dr. V. P. Bella. The Sportsmanship Award, presented by the Key Club, was awarded to Gayle Sanchez. Alan Richards, who maintained an almost straight A average during the season, received the Scholarship Award, given by Mu Sigma. Mr. Bankston, on behalf of the Baton Rouge Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame, presented a plaque in recognition of sportsmanship, scholarship, and leadership to Chaille Percy. Gayle Sanchez and Wayne Richmond also received certificates of merit from the same foundation. Eighteen players received letters at the banquet. Coach Pitalo presents the MVP Award to Chaille Percy. Basketball The Buccaneer basketball team went into the 1965 season under the leadership of its new coach Mr. Dan Wingate. Although the team's record was not outstanding, the year was marked by many instances of individual and team effort truly representative of the Broadmoor fighting spirit. Their vim and vigor urge the Buccaneers to victory; their lusty yell fills every silence. They are the Broadmoor High cheerleaders--the essence of school spirit. They have worked so that their enthusiasm might direct our cheers with precision and fervor. They have attended cheerleader conferences in the summer and have worked diligently that the weekly pep rallies would holster the spirit of the student body. To become a cheerleader, a girl must attain a C average, pass a skill test and a faculty screening test, and then go before the student body, who elects them in a school-wide election. ROW 1 - A. (V ) Qufx vidt' ' • There has been a steadily increasing interest of the American peoples in the realm of politics and its social connotations. This political awareness is even extending down into the high school levels and is producing a much more mature and thinking individual than ever before in America's educational history. The movement is well evidenced by Mr. Charclton Lyon's speaking to our student body this year and by the standing ovation given him. Mr. Lyons is a dynamic individualist who has found the closest statement of his standards in the Republican Party. He is sure to agree that the following excerpts from the Sharon statement are basic tenets of the American Way of Life. That foremost among the transcendent values is the individual's use of his God-given free will, whence derives liis right to be free from the restrictions of arbitrary force; That liberty is indivisible, and that political freedom cannot long exist without economic freedom; That the purposes of government are to protect these freedoms through the preservation of internal order, the provision of national defense and the administration of justice; That when government ventures beyond these rightful functions, it accumulates power which tends to diminish order and liberty; That the market economy, allocating resources by the free play of supply and demand, is the single economic system compatible with the requirements of personal freedom and constitutional government, and that it is at the same time the most productive supplier of human needs. That when government interferes with the work of the market economy, it tends to reduce the moral and physical strength of the nation; that when it takes from one man to bestow on another, it diminishes the incentive of the first; the integrity of the second, and the moral autonomy of both.
