The class of 1940 taxied down the seventh and eighth grades of the Junior high air port to take off on their high school flight as freshmen. Leading the expedition were two pilots, Douglas McIntyre and Sylvia O'Neal; two co-pilots. James Rees and Violet Barnett; Lucille Chaney and Vivian Barabllng, as hostesses, kept the reports, Edith Masood and Ruth Oates were financiers of the flight. After a long climb we finally reached our ceiling when we broadcasted the 666 Salvo Pro- gram over our short wave station, B. V. D., for an assembly program. Our advisors, Mr. McCavitt and Mr. Poore, trained us in the rudiments of aviation. After managing to get our ships under control we lazily landed in the field called Sophomore , with forty-two helpers on board, the parachutes; Vivian Barabllng, Aifaretta McKnight, Sylvia O'Neal, James Davis, and Violet Ritchey. Darrel Sattioux got on our ship at this port, having been left there by the plane before. We had the pleasure of a Minister's son, Raymond Wynn, traveling with Because so many had left us we had only one pilot, Douglas McIntyre; and one co-pilot, Clifford Blair. Lucille Chaney again acted as hostess and kept the reports. Ruth Gates took care of the financial part of this trip. With these new officers, and in good spirits, we prepared for many fogs. Our new guides, Mr. Runyan and Mr. Sheeler, wore jubilant over a prosperous flight. In June of 1936 we landed merrily on the field called Juniors . The passengers were then given leave for summer vacation. With thirty-nine on board, as some had again become afraid and bailed out, we flew away on the third flight of the Airship '40. Those who left were; Merril Ford, Eugene Heiater, Grace Baker, Evelyn Winfield, and Raymond Wynn. Gene Whited joined the crew of the airship of 1941 and Helen Evans came from Wood to travel with us for one year. As there were so few on board this year we crowded together in one ship with Mr. Hitchens as our advisor. We encountered a dense fog and had a hard time keeping officers. The pilot who piloted us most was George foster. Lee Whited acted as co-pilot. Olive May Eltman acted as hostess; Byron McIntyre took care of the financing of us this year The following, becoming frightened, used -10-
