Preparing for the Music Memory Contest, Vickie Hamilton, lulia Ranney, and Linda Stevens study the mood, instrumentation, and theme variation of the Pastoral Symphony. Carefully adding final decorative touches ot colored string and wire to her three-dimensional study of design and color, art pupil Nancy Cohen completes her composition. Fine arts develop cultural tastes and abilities Perseverance, hours of practice, and both desire and ability to learn are essential to Dick Olson in his trumpet study. if 26 From the brush of the artist, the pen of the com- poser, and the throat of the vocalist flow design, symphony, and melody, the products of Ripple's fine arts departments. Both classroom instruction and actual performance in art and music are available. Pupils interested in color, design, and handcrafts find varied opportunities for self-expression in the Art Department. Applied experience in sketching, painting, and sculpturing in Art l-IV develops a basic appreciation of color contrast, artistic balance, and technique. This course and those in craft art, jewelry, and commercial art develop natural talent and interest of the pupil to create real ability and cultural tastes. Study in vocal music begins with Chorus I, a general course in singing with some theory and appreciation included, and according to the vocalist's ability, ad- vances to performing groups such as A Cappella Choir, Colden Singers, and Madrigals. Ripple's orchestras and bands provide the pupil with an opportunity to make practical use of his instrumental ability in playing with a group.
