liequip Ripplites lor lullillment ol goals for luture Realizing that despite the presence of extra- curricular activities and social events, the purpose of the school remains primarily education, Ripple pupils create an academic atmosphere emanating from the school. A well-rounded education for everyone is the key- stone of Broad Ripple's academic policy, Although ranked as one of the nation's best college prepara- tory schools, Ripple strives to educate also those who end their education with high school graduation. Pupils choose from three diploma plans depending upon their abilities and plans for the future: academic, fine and practical arts, and general. Each course ot study, while allowing some freedom ot course selec- tion within the ll individual departments, never- theless requires a general knowledge in all areas for graduation. For some come tangible rewards in the form of honors and scholarship grants. But for all come the knowledge and satisfaction of having received a sturdy, -general education which will serve them well in whatever they do in the future. Undercurrents of foreign, familiar tongues blend The flowing current of French, the gutteral quality of German, the thick roll of Spanish, and the clipped familiarity of English provide a part of the many- textured background of the language departments. Following the changing trends in language learning, much of the Foreign Language Department has adopt- ed the conversational approach. Although Latin re- mains primarily translation, new French texts for the first two years present dialogues which students mem- orize. Cerman and Spanish texts being used for the first time also introduce the conversational technique and de-emphasize grammar. Only after learn- ing to speak the tongue fairly well does the pupil actually translate texts, Finally, after he has mastered the ability to speak his language, he studies the grammar principles. English pupils necessarily approach their studies from a different angle. Although they have already learned to speak the language, pupils must constantly increase their vocabularies, Therefore, En-glish I-Vl stress, among other things, vocabulary improvement. These six semesters required for graduation, include instruction in theme writing, literary appreciation, and grammar. Courses in publications, Speech, and advanced literature and composition enable pupils to enrich their knowledge of their lang.uage.
