When the members of our Senior Class were just babies, Broad Ripple High School consisted of our present old building, a 14-room unit built in 1913, and a just-completed west wing-then only two stories high. During the past seventy years Broad Ripple has grown from a four-room township s o h o o l to a well - equipped building with 54 classrooms, a large library, two gymna- siums, a cafeteria, and nu- merous offices. Today Ripple is a first-class commission high school in a fast-growing section of Indianapolis. It ranks high educationally, be- ing a member of the North Central Association of Col- leges and Secondary Schools -a goal attained by less than one-fifth of Indiana's high schools. 4 X L ,V Fw' x L. -.LL'L'VL-wi., - t.,A, my ff'751sVffL . :ii A . yryk L L xxx Q Smfw-V. ff-:'ffV'55 f ,'g. 2 WK' L..?f5??V',VgfV--'f-fL-wwVL Viif- -V ' ' 7' --.L ' ' wg? Hard luck hounds Rockets . . . Ripple's 1953 gridmen opened their tough schedule at Kokomo. After an even first quarter the Rockets broke into the scoring column. A pass from Dick Hodges to Paul Jenkins tallied for Ripple, and a touchdown gallop by Frank Parker made the halftime count 12-0 in favor of Broad Ripple. In the third quarter halfback Kenny Long moved 67 yards to put the Black and Orange out in front, 19-0. Kokomo came back in the fourth quarter with two touch- downs, but Ripple won, 19-14. The next week Ripple faced a powerful Tech team on the latter's field. After a rocky 27-0 first half the Ripplites couldn't recover, and in spite of their two second- half touchdowns the gridders lost 27-14. 28 All-state Richmond halfback Tommy Fletcher eludes Ripple tackler Merrill Gilpin. After dropping the Homecoming game to mighty Richmond, 48-6, Broad Ripple faced Howe in its second city tilt of the year. Unable to get any breaks, Ripple lost, 7-6. After falling before a fine Washington eleven the Rockets were downed by Manual. Cathedral beat Broad Ripple, 20-0, scor- ing all of its points in the first half. Besides Lowe, Coach Mordie Lee used Marshall Gage and Jim Campbell to bear the brunt of the running chores. Campbell, only a sophomore, was the Rockets' out- standing runner. The Rockets opened the '53 season with a fourth in a quadrangular meet and a loss to this year's state champion, Shortridge. The thinlies then defeated Richmond, 28-26 and Zionsville, 39-16. In the big meets the team got a fifth in the Howe Invitational and the City Meet while taking only a sixth in the County Meet. A first in a triangular meet with Lawrence Central and Crispus Attucks and a loss to Ben Davis closed the season. Divot-diggers win six matches W'-at The 1953 Ripple golf squad enjoyed one of its most successful seasons as it compiled a 6-1-2 record in match play, outscoring its opponents 94W to 52w. The team, under the direction of Coach John Williams, was led by Letterman Kenny Appel and Sophomore Bart Spillman. In medal play the divot-diggers opened with a win over Warren Central and Manual. On April 18 the squad was to play against Lawrence Central and Washington but was snowed out. In the rematch Ripple was second behind Law- rence. The team picked up another second be- hind West Lafayette in a triangular affair with the latter and Washington. In the Terre Haute Invitational the golfers took a third behind Bloomington and Indianapolis Tech. To finish the spring season the squad placed fifth in the County Meet and was ninth in an 18-team sectional, which was not high enough to qualify them for the state. In the '53 fall County Meet the divot-diggers placed second. Junior Bart Spillman blasts out of a sand trap. Spillman is the team's only returning letterman. Racket squad second in city Led by Seniors John Mutz and Stan Paulsen, Coach Bob Hougham's tennis squad compiled a final record of five wins to four losses and fin- ished second in the City Tourney last spring. Ripple opened the season with a loss to An- derson, 5-2. In their second match the Rockets beat Tech, 5-2, for their first victory. After bowing to city-rival, Shortridge, 6-1, the racket- men trounced Park, 6-1. Broad Ripple downed Cathedral, 5-2, only to lose to Crawfordsville, 5-2. In their second match with Cathedral the Ripplites were de- feated, 5-2. After tripping up Columbus, 6-1, Ripple won its second match from Park, 5-2. T C When Ripplites shout with glee at seeing their pictures or names in the city papers, it is usually the work of the school NEWS BUREAU. These busy correspond- ents send news releases to TV and radio stations in addition to four newspap- ers. Every major school event is included on their beats, and each article printed is displayed on the main-hall bulletin board. Parents find out about other important things at school besides that dreamy boy in study hall, and these stories boost Ripple's activities throughout the Harrower, Brant Moore. year. They handle t h e complicated financing of both the Yearbook and the W e e k 1 y with level- headed accuracy and insist that mistakes are too cost- ly to be made. The annual subscription campaign a n d circulation work are other jobs on their long list. Merchants find it good business to increase sales by purchasing ad s p a c e from staffers. Reporters mark SG at close of WeekIy's 25th anniversary Early in the year Ripplites presented a bundle of birthday wishes to the newspaper at the auditorium party and the Birthday Ball. At a grand finale, the Journalism Awards dinner, a silver anniversary cake was enjoyed by staff members and guests. Meanwhile staiers gave their time and energy to the paper. Deadline night found the Riparian room buzzing. The staff's store of candy was raided, and typists were shanghaied as the deadline rush began. For the past five years the Weekly has earned Quill and Scroll's highest rating. 1 FQ N fp x ,W tk Qi it 1 :T .sau Irfriu S6 The elevator to success is not runningg we take the stairs was the motto of the Class of 1927. PL. 7012 Cecil Earle Carolyn Norman, Gracie Hall, Bud Richey l Editor-in-chief Judy Frank and Asso- ciate Editor Frank Hirschman plan the 1954 yearbook at the Indiana University High School Journalism Institute. Yearbook editors took their first steps to create the '54 Riparian when they drew thumbnail sketches of the book at Indiana University's Journalism Institute last summer. Then during the two weeks of lecture and laboratory classes they completed an actual-size dummy or plan which won a first-place award in Institute competition. Riparian yearbooks have received the All-American rating for the last five years. Staffers take steps for '54 Yearbook Cheese, peaches, crackers, shoot! This strange vocabulary belonged to Dale Searcy, Riparian photographer, who wanted Ripplites to smile. Oh, don't cut off his ear was another fa- miliar phrase in the Riparian ofiice as picture trimming began. Then typewriters clicked, and staffers produced copy amidst a mound of dic- tionaries and other literary helps. On weekends a nd holidays W h e n other students were resting, yearbook editors were burning the midnight oil and fretting over nearing deadlines. But finally, after checking and double checking, they entrusted their copy to the engraver and printer for final pro- duction of Ripple's story of the year.
