I1 SENIOR CLASS HISTORY On August Z3, 1945, thirty-four active Freshmen started into high school. They progressed very well until the latter part of the year when we had a few departures. Four of our fellow classmates, thinking it not worthwhile to become Sophomores, de- parted, each going to new and unknown surroundings. The remaining thirty closed their algebra books with a sigh of relief and skipped lightly into the Sophomore Class. Through the Sophomore year we had a few additions and some departures. At the close of our Sophomore year we had a total loss of eight, who didn't wish to return to become Juniors. The highlights of the school activities came when we had our Junior Play, which was held at the Bristow Gymnasium. Also the Juniors entertained the Senior class with a Banquet at the Helm Hotel. Afterwards we enjoyed a movie at the Capitol Theatre. The most successful year of all was the Senior year. The year in which we were to become more dignified. It was fun looking back over the past, and challenging to think of the future. The Senior class strove for unity and discipline, as well as eventual success As in all classes, we had our good traits and our bad ones, but evidently we came through quite successfully. As Seniors we wanted all our under-classmates to know the secret of our happiness and success. A desperate attempt has been made to co-operate fully with our fellow classmates and our faculty, and to share the good in everyone. On May 6, 1949, the remaining twenty stepped forward to receive their diplomas, each thinking that the four years of high school had passed too soon. We, the Senior Class of 1949, each departed with a hope of meeting again in a brighter tomorrow. Each felt that he was fully prepared to face the responsibilities of adult life. THEfHUSTOW'COMETS 0F'49 CHEERLEADERS 35 SPORTS COLUMN Our Sports' Activities started with softball. We had a very successful season. In the first game of the District Tournament, which was held at North Warren, September 23rd and 24th, we won over North Warren by a score of 29-16. In the finals we won over Brownsville by 20- 14. The team was coached by Mr. Brooks and Mr. Everly, our agriculture teacher. On November 9, 1948, we opened our 1948-49 basketball season with a one point loss to Richardsville in a well played game. We had an extra good squad consisting of Jack Harvey, Leon Hendrick, Sam Henderson, Maury Herrington, and Bill Long. Coach Carroll Brooks se- lected Billy Laurence, a Junior, as manager and Dean Massey, an Eighth grader, as assistant manager. The B Team was composed of: Kenneth Fuller, James Smith, Junior Whitaker, Bill Lindsey, Wayne Kimbro, John R. Mustain, Maurice Cole, Randall Wood, and Dale Stahl. The Bristow Comets were eager to see the season open. The new gym was completed, and they had a better place to practive and play. Larger crowds came to see the team perform, because they had a more spacious place in which to enjoy the game. The most contested game during the County Tournament, which was sponsored by the Park City Daily News, was the game with South Warren. The games were held at the Western Gym, December 16-18, We started by playing our usual opponent, South Warren. We won this exciting game by a 47-29 margin. We won over North Warren by a 51-32 in the semi-finals and Richardsville in the finals by 37-35. The B Team went down in defeat at the hand of North Warren in the finals. A nice trophy was presented to Coach Carroll Brooks and his team. The honor of being selected for the all tournament team was received by Maury Herrington, Leon Hendrick, and iam Henderson. A After the victory, the Parent-Teachers Association gave the ball players, cheerleaders, and their guests a banquet at the School Cafeteria. At the beginning of Basketball Season, the faculty and student body decided the squad should have a title name. A contest got under way and each high school pupil submitted a name. At the close of the contest a teacher and pupil from each room submitted Comets to be the future name of the team. The basketball team was supported by an enthusiastic student body and four capable cheerleaders ---- Marie Perry, Martha Webb, Lavonne O'Banion, and Thelma Hendricks. As this edition of the '49 Annual goes to press the climax of the basketball season has not been reached, as we have our district, regional and state tournaments coming in the near future We, as the Seniors, will not forget what a most enjoyable year of basketball we have had. No doubt many of these fine athletes will go out into the world and excel in the field of sports! We are the Future Homemakers of America We face the future with warm courage And high hope The Bristow F.H.A. Chapter was organized by the help of North Warren Chapter. At our first meeting, October 21, 1948, we elected officers with formal initiation. President-Anne Davisg Vice Pres- ident-Thelma Hendricks: Secretary-Kathryn Penningtong Treasurer-Lou Ola Stahlg Historian-Carolyn Lyles: Reporter-Erlene Hayesg Parliamentarian-Clara Atchley: and Song Leader-Marie Wallace. At our first meeting we had 21 members. But at Christmas one of our members moved, Betty .To Higdon, and in January we gained one new member, .Toan McBroom. Our colors are red and white, the flower of our or- ganization is the red rose. The motto is Toward New Horizon. The emblem is a house supported by two hands with sunrays extending out from the home. I We have set before us three goals: ill personal im- provementg Q21 promotion of recreationg and Q31 devel- opment of international relationship. We have completed all of these goals, and we are now working on our degrees of recognition. To receive a degree each girl has special qualifications to fulfull. The highest honor achieved is to be an Honor Ro1l chapter, who's temperature is 212 degrees F. For each accomplishment our temperature rises a certain number of degrees. We now stand 107 degrees F, We are working toward an Honor Rol1 chapter and hope to reach it before the school term ends. Although it is new here, Vocational Agriculture Departments have been known for many years throughout the nation, It has long been felt that agriculture is necessary to the well being of farm people and the nation. Within the United States, there are more than 9,000 schools that offer a four year course in vocational agriculture. We, of the school, are proud of such a department and hope that the community is just as proud Since agriculture is the basic industry of our great nation, funds have been set aside by the Federal Government to aid in this Vocational Agriculture program. The Future Farmers of America, an organization of Vocational Agriculture boys, has become an integral part of the vocational education in agriculture in the public school systems of America, and has become well known in recent years. These organizations date back to 1928 and since that time have served to motivate and vitalize the systematic instruction offered to students of Vocational Agriculture, and to provide further training in farmer-citizenship. The F.F.A. is a non-profit, non-political, farm youth organization of voluntary membership, designed to take its place along with other agencies striving for the development of leadership, the building of a more permanent agriculture, and the improvement of country life. A few of the activities we are attempting in our first year of F.F.A. are: Setting up our chapter room with necessary paraphernalia. Buying certified seed corn co-operatively for boys and dads. Selling certified, root-rot resistant varieties of tobacco seed. Adding to our library within our chapter room. Subscribing to two good farm magazines for our chapter. Holding a father and son banquet for purpose of establishing a closer association be- tween dads and boys and between farmers. Accepting as our responsibilities the care of the school grounds. Encouraging better farming methods in community. Sponsoring F.F.A. softball and basketball teams for development of health and fair play.
