Perry, Principal THE PHST IS BUT ll SHIIDDLU More truthful words could not express the way we, the class of 1959, feel about the four memorable years we have spent in the halls of Bristol High. From the first day we entered the Freshman Building a new world opened for us. We made many new friends, confronted unusual prob- lems, and had many different and exciting experiences which brought us both joy and sorrow. Now as Seniors about to leave BHS, we can look back and recall memories which will never be forgotten. Remember how shy we were at the Freshman Frolic and how exciting our first big football game was! How many times were we caught go- ing through the great Senior Door! We remember, too, the concerts we took part in, the club pizza parties, and all the homework! Yes, and the traditions and symbols which are the foundation of the ideals of BHS, too, can never be for- gotten. Minerva we will especially remember as the God- dess of Wisdom who forever watches over us and serves as the meeting place known by all who walk her halls. But as we reminisce we also realize that we now have the future to look forward to and that these memories are but the past. Like all remembrances they will fade into shadows, shadows symbolic of our life at BHS. That is why we, the 1959 Torch staff, have chosen shadows as our theme. We hope that through the shadows we create for you now, we will be able, many years from now, to relive the mem- orable days we spent at our high school alma mater. They are the people who keep our school running in a smooth, orderly manner. With- out this cheerful, efficient staff, BHS would fall apart. Therefore, how can we help but include these wonderful leaders and organizers among our shadows? The patient, helpful teacher, the sincere, kind principal, the secretary in the office, the understanding nurse, and the busy jani- tor all are a part of our memories of BHS. These people have not only guided us toward the right path to suc- cess but have also become our friends. When we look back to the shadows of our BHS life, it will be very hard for us to forget these people who made that life possible. In United States History we learn about our own land, while in World History we become interested in the ais- toms, development, and people of neighbor countries near and far. Our energetic, earnest teachers work to promote good citizenship and a deeper understanding of different peoples. Which student can ever forget the struggle to recall the dates and battles so significant in the history of the world? And which student can forget how his Economics course made him a wealthy man through the stock exchange? Because of these courses we now easily realize the ever important work of the social sciences. Mathematics develops reasoning powers Slide rule, logarirhms, ocrahedron, compass, long columns of figures . . . these symbols of mathematics classes will long be remembered by the students of Bristol High. Each student is urged to take at least one math course during his four years. Those students who have included math as a part of their yearly course agree that the teachers are the best. Their courses aid greatly in the development of logical reasoning powers and offer challenging, enjoyable experiences. Students and teachers alike consider higher mathe- matics as a basis for a career in science or engineering. Advanced subjects are now being offered to increase the interest of superior students who desire a stronger mathematical background. Only by the cultivation of young peoples minds can the ever increasing shortage of good mathematicians be remedied. JJ , ,uv - -Y -M--4: :::'. -'- , .-1: 212 . Science gives the student an appreciation of nature and the perfect organization of the universe. Through the efforts of our superb teachers the happenings in the world around us are explained. Seemingly complicated occurrences are found to have relatively simple explanations while the happenings we take for granted often prove to be amazing phenomena. Many students find the various science courses fascinating. Dissecting a frog, preparing oxygen, analyzing a solution, or demonstrating a system of levers are activities symbolizing the various courses offered in the scientific held. The emphasis on science in schools today is rapidly increasing to meet the world's demand for scientists. Who knows that BHS might not produce another Einstein? SCIENCE DEPARTMENT. The Business Department prepares students who usually wish to enter the field of business immediately after graduation. Among the courses offered, bookkeeping and stenography are probably the most valuable to the future office worker. Of course, every student in any curriculum realizes the value of typing skill. Our splendid Business teachers succeed in making classes interesting as well as educational. Even students not in the Busi- ness course find this world of adding machines, mimeograph machines, and dictaphones quite intriguing. The Business students themselves are, of course, the first to appreciate the knowledge they gained in Commercial Arithmetic or Office Practiceg for they are the people who will make our big business concerns, factories, and stores run smoothly and efficiently. Our girls find the Home Economics Department most useful and practical. Not only do they learn the valuable art of boiling potatoes or pinning a pattern, but they also grasp the technique of managing a home efficiently and economically. Keeping a budget and vacuuming the livingroom become just as important as broiling a steak for dinner. Our able, experienced teachers are the guides in improving a girl's homemaking talents. They enjoy their work and hope to pass on their feelings to the students who take their courses. Learning to cooperate with other people and enjoying the task at hand are probably the most important things a girl learns from her Home Economics courses. The Physical Education Department functions basically to keep our students physi- cally fit. It builds sound bodies by providing a break in the days routine. Many popular sports are included in the program prepared by our good-natured, energetic staff of teachers. Intramural competition also aids in developing fine qualities of sportsmanship and cooperation. As a vital part of our school life, the Physical Education Department emphasizes the factors which determine good health. Boys' gym class: One-two-three! One-two-three! PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT. Technical studies prepare young men to take their place in the vast, progressing world of industry. From Tech courses such as machine shop, drafting, and woodworking, boys are able to develop their own vocational aptitudes. The basic aim of the Technical Department is to provide the boys with a working knowl- edge of some useful trade. Its efficient, friendly instructors work to uncover hidden mechanical or mathematical skills. Our Seniors, leaders of the future, are proud to have been a part of BHS. Their capable class officers: Ronald Herriott, President, jeffrey King, Vice-President, Arlene Kerr, Secretary, and joan McHugh, Treasurer, have guided them in carrying out traditions of the past and setting examples for the future. These Seniors will some- day drift into the shadows of the past, but the ideals they leave behind will never be forgotten. As the last class to graduate from Bristol High School, our Seniors are now ready to enter the vast outside world. They have worked diligently at BHS and now are going out to play their part in the life of progress. Some will immediately enter the fields of industry or business, others will go on to college to prepare for a professional career, all will have to face the responsibilities and problems of reality. Its purpose is to promote a better under- standing of the principles and qualities used in good busi- ness procedures. Membership is made up of three groups: active, associate, and honorary. The active members are BHS students enrolled in business classes, the associates are BHS business graduates who automatically become associate members, and the honorary group is made up of the advisors and other interested businessmen in the community. These immortal words sound loud and clear at all our Bristol High games. Freezing in the bleachers at our foot- ball games or watching our basketball team at the State Armory, we enjoy every minute of the Rams in action. The harriers, the splashers, and the shooters all display their athletic talents, but above all they show BHS good sportsmanship. The participators and the spectators together deserve the credit for insuring the success of our teams and the respect of our opponents. And lest we forget - sports also play a vital part in creating the school spirit which never fades at BHS. So as the last touchdown is scored as the last basket is made - more shadows are born. 7 It N n , E RONALD HERRIOTI' Co-Captain As Coach Tom Monahan and Jim Roche par- ticipated in their last year as BHS gridiron coaches, they ran into a hard-luckn season.
