FOREWORD In honor of the retirement of our Superintendent of Schools, it is only fitting that the class of 1955 dedicate this, our Torch, to the untiring efforts of Mr. Karl A. Reiche. Between these covers we have tried to highlight the changes and advances which have been effected in our school system during the last forty years. and to contrast present day school life with that of the first class to receive diplomas from Mr. Reiche. We hope you will enjoy our efforts. We should like to acknowledge the aid of Mr. Brown of the T. O'Toole and Sons. Inc.. our printers. Mr. Rubens of the XY'hitney Studios, and Ted Dully of our own class in helping us to compile this years Torch. Second lznztb. 5c,,Iy0,.j. Mmpdiqnmg. t c 4if? 1 1- 11. . , -L 'WA ,I lf- X . PERRY We shall remember the class of 1955 as one of the largest graduat- ing classes in several years and also as one of the most cooperative. We shall also remember your class as the iirst to hold an outdoor gradu- ation. In your senior year an effort was made to challenge the rapid learners in your ranks by offering several advanced subjects. You seized upon them with zeal. In the fields of music, dramatics, athletics, and journalism you gave freely of your talents. We hope that your many experiences at B.H.S. have made you better men and women and that they will bring you suc- cess and happiness in the years that lie ahead. - George R. Perry MR. MARSH You are nearing the end of a journey and I trust that it leaves with you a thought that is big and strong: that the great hope of our society rests in individual character. They can conquer who believe they can. Society is built on confidence and trust. I earnestly hope that these principles will be your guide in the future. Sincere congratula- tions to each member of this grad- uating class. -Charles C. Marsh MR. ROSEEN Working with your class has been a pleasant and rewarding exper- ience. Best wishes for continued success! - Earl C. BOARD OF EDUCATION The unfailing concern for the welfare of the students in Bristol is among the many praiseworthy comments we would naturally reserve for the members of our Board of Education. The plan of the Board throughout their years of service has always been to guide and advise us in our undertakings. We, the staff, speak for all the students in expressing our appreciation to Mr. Reiche and the Board members for all that they have done for us. MR. MAGNU SON Assistant Superintendent Best wishes that members of the class of 1955 may have most happy and successful fu- tures and that our most valuable concept of , American freedom to achieve may be passed along to the classes of following years. It has been fun to know so many of you and I have every confidence that you can in the future do your share and more. - Carl A. Magnuson ,Jw i. OFFICE MESSENGERS Left to right, first row: Dedola. Some 350 eager students seeking extra knowledge jammed the freshmen institution while some fifty strong invaded the Tech Campus, We were anxious to meet our new teachers and see what thel' were like. We as freshmen proclaimed to the world that we were grownup, but later we found out what the score really was. After a couple of weeks, the novelty started to wear off and we got right down to brass tacks, but we had much trouble with the oneaway traflic system. Our traffic squad made sure that we were going in the right direction at all times. Many a time we were late for class. The changing of classes and the different colored passes were just a few of our troubles. The thing that frightened most of us was the P.A. system, it seemed to know every move we made. Our first social affair was the Freshman Frolic which was held on November sixteenth. After a bashful start, with the boys standing in groups on one side of the gym, and the girls likewise on the other. we settled down to have a good time. It was a tremendous success with Tech's most popular teacher, Mr. St, Lawrence, conducting the fesUvides.'ThB is one of the fen'tnnes we ever got to see the Tech boys aM dressed up. just before the Christmas vacation, an all-out political campaign was staged in both Tech and the Freshman Buildings. lt was to see who were going to be our class officers. After all was said and done, our first cabinet was as follows: Bob Dailey, presidentg vice-president, Ronald Stocks, secretary, jackie Dupuis, while we put our thousandsinthecapabk handsofjohn VVhne The spotlight switches to our fabulous Freshman basketball squad which was undefeated and which makes up our varsity team this year. This team had a great array of stars. They were spearheaded by rugged Captain George Yosh Redman, Beak Gaski, the Golden Greek Ziotas, Jerry Greger, Big Al Benecick and Bob Scoville, better known to Tech boys as Liberace. We shouldn't forget that we had some of the liveliest and best looking cheer- leadersaroundgthey gavethe boystnuch needed conhdence when the going gotrough. They were Captain, Sharon Rullig Co-Captain, Pudgy Pratt, jo-Anne Pittman, June Landry, Betty Verreault, joan Monico, jackie Dupuis, Joyce Marcotte, Catherine Zissopolous, and Claudette Thibodeau. I don't have to tell you what an excellent job they did, just look at the great record our teani had that year While still on the subject of sports, we were thrilled to know two of our boys at the Freshman Building received varsity letters. Fred Smith won his letter in soccer, and George Yosh Redman won his letter in football and baseball. We all welcomed spring knowing that our vacation was near, When we look back, it wasn't so bad after ally we made many new friends and we had some rare good times. I gather all of us passed our exams with flying colors. At any rate, all of us looked forward to entering the Senior Building. Our sophomore year opened with a bang, at least for some, though for others it wasn't. We ran into stubborn opposition when we tried to enter by that well- known gateway, the Senior Door, only to be tossed out by our superiors. One of the big things we enjoyed was being able to attend assemblies which helped break up the day. Once again we had to go to the polls to select our class leaders. This time it was just like the big time elections, we had the privilege of voting by machine. After all the votes were compiled, the scoreboard read: Sal Duke Acampora, president, Claudette Thibodeau and George Ancher, vice-presidents, Mary Hyland, secretary, and Barbara Russell was entrusted with our millions. One of the big happenings in December of our Sophomore year was the resig- nation of our principal, Mr. Magnuson, and the arrival of Mr. Perry as our new men- tor. While we were sorry to see Mr. Magnuson leave us, we soon found that Mr. Per- ry was a worthy successor. Capturing the sport spotlight was the addition of some of the new grid greats, they were jerry Greger, Paul Chellberg, and Shake Nilson. The big social event of the year had come once again, and this time it was the Sophomore Hop, with Al DeCaro's band making this social gathering a great success. The newly chosen cheerleaders were Claudette Thibodeau and june Desjardins. Barbara Russell, Susan Metzger, and Betty Theriault were the new strutters and we all were very proud of the spendid job they did. 55 Fun al lbe Fmlic. Hnl.L Frerbman Elecziom. '31 I . The ever lucky Tech boys received an unscheduled vacation when much needed repairs were being made on the chimney - closing the University for a whole day. As the critical year came to a close with the completion of exams which we managed to pull through, we were looking forward to a bigger and better junior year when we should be upper classmen. September came once -more, and we returned to B.H.S. -- now as high and mighty juniors. However, the hike all the way to the third fioor made some of us wish we were Sophomores again. Before we realized it, class election time was on us. With a minimum of in- juries, we finally elected Sal Duke Acampora, president, Claudette Thibodeau and David Scott, vice-presidents, jackie Dupuis, secretary, and Gail Foster, treasurer. Our junior boys were a big asset to the rough and tough eleven. Among these he-men were such greats as Yosh Redman, Larry Nilson, Al Benecick, Jerry Greger, Duke Acampora, and Paul Chellberg. At all the games we were proud to see more of our junior girls as cheerleaders and majorettes. Sharon Rulli and Mary Ann Winters were now helping to lead the crowd in cheers, while Doris Pelletier and Sandy Peters were flashingftheir barons. The next thing we knew football was gone, and everyone was going to see our hoop squad in action at the Armory. The junior class was represented by three mem- bers who got their letters in basketball: Henry Beak Gaski, Al Benecick, and George Yosh Redman, This year we saw New Haven, but once again we lost in the semi- finals. It was in january that one of our classmates, Doreen Dutkiewicz, was fatally in- jured. She had many friends here at Bristol High. Earlier Kerry Norton, after a long illness had died. He had been a very popular member of our class. On January 30, the Junior Barn Dance Was held in the gym. We appeared in slacks and shirts all set for our First really informal class dance. In the end it was generally agreed that everyone had had a grand time, and - believe it or not - al- most everyone stayed to the end. At the beginning of February there was only one topic on the tongues of the Glee Club members - especially the girls. Imagine, real colfege men giving a con- cert at our school with a dance afterward. Yes, the members of the Lafayette College Glee Club really took Bristol High by storm. Girls went around in a happy daze for weeks after, much to the disgust of the boys. In April the National Honor Society inducted new members, and seventeen of our Juniors were admitted. Then baseball time came. Captained by a junior, George Ancher, the team had quite a successful season. Some of our great stars were Yosh Redman, Buck Coan the charmer Al Scharmer, Dick Munger, Jerry Greger, and John Yuschak. The date of April 24 really meant something as the Juniors stole the social spot- light, for it was the night of the junior Prom, The theme of the dance, April Show- ers , had been beautifully carried out with decorations of bright crepe-papered um- brellas and colorful raindrops, At this dance Duke Acampora and Pat Burns were crowned Prince and Princess. 1 In May we were all proud to learn that Wayne Brenckman was one of five in the United States to win in a contest a full tuition scholarship to Rugby School in England for his Senior year. Fred Smith was named an alternate for a similar scholar- ship. At the end of the year many juniors were honored at the Awards Assembly. Prominent among them were Fred Smith with the Harvard Book Prize, Wayne Brenckman, Trinity Book Prize, and Pat Burns, Elmira Key Award. On Class Day, after having suffered at the hands of the Seniors, to us Juniors were finally granted the Senior privileges - immediately being seated at assemblies and the using of the Senior door. Then came exams - the exams that would make us real Seniors - with luck. Somehow we managed, but it took a full two months' vacation to prepare ourselves for our biggest and best year. At last we had reached the top - we were Seniors. That first day you could al- ways tell Seniors by the smug superior looks they gave all underclassmen. Remember the first assembly we had? How we Seniors gloated as we sat down and watched those who stood suffering until Mr. Perry gave the word. This year as we marched into assemblies, we realized that the orchestra was one of the best in a long time. In late September, down to the gym balcony we tramped to listen to the cam- paign speeches of our class ofhce-seekers. Then it was on to the voting machines. Soon 56 the election results were announced - our all-important Senior Officers were: presi- dent, Larry Nilsong vice-president, Jerry Gregerg secretary, Pat Burnsg and treasurer, Barbara Russell. And then there was the statue of Minerva, great Minerva, goddess of wisdom. One October day we were startled to discover that she looked white instead of gray. Yes, five of out own Senior girls had given her her first bath in over 30 years. In the fall the cross-country and soccer teams started to get busy scoring points for good old B.H.S. On crisp fall days, too, we loyal fans shivered on those cold bleachers at Muzzy Field. Our football team under its co-captains, Larry Nilson and George Redman, had a good season this year with five wins against three close setbacks. Along came Halloween and we all gathered down at the Armory. There we learned that the Harvest King and Queen were our own Larry Nilson and Pat Burns. Scarecrows and farm animals decorated the gym on December ll as we arrived at our own Senior Barn Dance. to dance to the music of Al Caruso's orchestra. With Bernie O'Keefe as master of ceremonies, we watched a heart-throbbing melodrama and applauded Ray Frankowskis and ,Toe Lanosa's talent on the accordion. This year the student body decided to have a name for their teams. Several nom- inations were submitted to the A.A. Council who picked the best ones. On the final vote by the whole school, it was indicated that all teams would henceforth be known as the Bristol Rams. Our basketball season began late this year, but under Beak Gaski's captainship it looked as though we had another good team for B.H.S. Our thoughts soon turned to New Haven, and the old dream of seeing Boston came back. At all these games our peppy cheerleaders with june Desjardins as captain led the crowd in encouraging our team. At half-time, our high-stepping majorettes under Barbara Russell, took the floor and performed to the music of Tony Ronzello and his great band. Where would the maiorettes be without that band? This year many new things had been added. Four new courses were offered: Special English, Math Analysis, Quantative Analysis, and Auto Mechanics. A Rifle Club was established. The National Athletic Scholarship Society for boys was started in Bristol, while girls were eligible for the Girls' Athletic Scholarship Society of Bristol. As far as clubs were concerned, there were varied activities. For the first time in many years Horizons was published in the Bristol Press. The lnternational Rela- tions Club celebrated its 20th year of continuous existence. Footlighters presented a Christmas play, while the various musical organizations assisted at this and other school assemblies. During the winter the swimming team was busy splashing up points. As spring came the cinder-path boys, better known as the track team, could be seen working out. The tennis team alias the Racket Squad, could also be seen practicing for their games. Baseball came at last. Again captained by George Ancher, our team was all set for another successful season. Meanwhile, the girls had been piling up points in va- rious sports. In December and again in April more Seniors were inducted into the National Honor Society. x Suddenly we realized that four of the greatest years of our lives were fast draw- ing to a close. Then we determined to make the most of what little time was left. Senior Day - a chance to inflict pain on the underclassmen - well, to a cer- tain extent anyway, This was sweet revenge in token of all the miseries previous Sen- iors had imposed on us. Finally came the biggest night in all our high school years - the Senior Prom. Naturally, it was the most beautiful and best loved dance ever, with our own King and Queen reigning. Too soon, we came to the end of our four year journey - Class Night and graduation time came. Our class had the distinction of being the first to have an out- door graduation at Muzzy Field. As we think back on our high school years, we realize how much fun we really had amidst all the work. We are sure that, during the past forty-two years of Mr, Reiche's superintendency, we and all graduating classes have recognized and are grate- ful for all he, the school board, the principals, and the teachers have done to give us opportunities for an education and for enjoyment. As we walk on into the future, we know in our hearts we shall never forget our own Bristol High School. George Ancher and Abigail Foster 57 4..x...a..,-Ja.: 90. jzmior Prom. This was September, 1952, when we entered the Freshman Building. It took quite a while to become acquainted with the unfamiliar passes and the one way traffic, but we soon adjusted ourselves to all of these. The first big event of the year was the Freshman Frolic, where all the students got together and made new acquaintances. Be- fore long, posters were decorating the bulletin boards, and campaign speeches were being presented for the coming election. The results of this political event were Robert Swat Duval, president, Don For- tier and Bill Glaske, vice-presidents, Beverly Cross, secretary, and Frank Drzewiecki, treasurer. The basketball season proved successful with J. P. LeFebvre acting as captain. We suffered only two defeats. The cheerleaders headed by Mickey Gaski, added to the basketball events. It didn't take long before September, 1955, rolled around, and we entered the Senior Building as Sophomores. The upperclassmen gave us a hard time by confusing us when we tried to find our differ- ent classrooms, but it was all in fun. Elections came earlier this year, we had a new experience using the voting machines. When the ballots were counted, the results were as follows: Steve Lasewicz, president, Bill Blaschke, vice-president, Diana Malvezzi, secretary, and john Paul LeFebvre, treasurer. The main attraction of our sophvmore year was the Sophomore Hop. It was a gay affair and a huge success. Wendy Zetarski, Maureen Loughlin, and Holly Lyman were chosen to be majorettes. Mickey Gaski and Denise O'Brien were se- lected to be on the cheering squad. They all did a wonderful job. The Sophomore year went by so fast that it was hard to believe that September, 1954, had arrived, and we were now juniors. The annual elections were held and jack Czertak was elected president of our class, with the assistance of Gwen Baker and Ernie Carlson as vice-presidents, Sue Dunn, secretary, and Paul Fortier, treasurer. ' Caryl Thompson, Diana Malvezzi, and Barbara Tyminski were chosen as majorettes, while Nancy Quinlan and Sue Dunn were se- lected as cheerleaders. On January 29, the gym was appropriately decorated for the Junior Barn Dance. Everyone had a wonderful time at an event that will never be forgotten. This year Steve Lasewicz, Tony Clement, and Mike Philpott were selected for the varsity basketball squad and made a very good showing. The Junior Prom was held on April 24 and was a grand affair. The hall was decorated elaborately for the occasion, the dance will always be memorable to the Juniors. We are all anxious to enter our senior year, when we can enjoy the traditional senior privileges. 65 1952 OFFICERS Freshman Cheerleaders V 'e X A+-f ls 1953 OFFICERS 7 Sophomore Hop Freshman Frolic The Grand March 1953 Class Officers f ' D Freshman Cheerleaders SOPHGMORE CLASS HISTORY The first day of our happy high school career began on Septem- ber 9, 1953, when we entered the red brick Freshman High School. There were no upper classmen here to sell us elevator passes or to direct us to a room that was non-existent. Soon we adjusted ourselves to the new rules and the homework. Before we knew it, all our talk was turned to our own freshman dance, the Freshman Frolic. It was a great success, with almost the whole student body attending. Here we became acquainted with our classmates from the Technical Build- ing, We also had a chance to decide whom we would like to nominate for our class officers, next event of importance to occur in our lives as Freshmen. The final outcome of our elections were president, john Kayaisg vice-presidents, jay Pellegrini and David Behrendtg secretary, Helen Bird, and treasurer, Suzanne Thompson. Our freshman year passed happily and rapidly, and we all felt a bit sad to leave the school in which we had spent the first year of our high school life. How- ever, we all were looking forward to the great adventure that awaited us at the Senior Building. The first days proved to be quite complicated with the false direc- tions of upper classmen and the numerous rooms that were situated on each side of the seemingly gigantic halls. But soon the number of rooms decreased and the halls became smaller. The first big event that took place at the Senior Building was the election of sophomore class officers. The halls buzzed with the discussion of whom to vote for and with the speeches of campaign managers. Here we had a chance to vote on a real voting machine. To manage the affairs of our class we elected as president, Thomas Petkeg vice-presidents, Lester Albee and David Behrendtg secretary, Gail Grenkeg and treasurer, George Plocharski. Soon after the elections the plans for the Sopho- more Hop were made. Again the class of 1957 met for an evening of social entertainment. It was as popular as the Freshman Frolic. By this time in high school life, the boys had acquired more courage, and we found more of the kids coming in couples. Four members of our class became majorettes this year: Gail Grenke, Fran Lasewicz, Penny Wlmite, and Grace Crowley. Judy Carl- son and Helen Bird were added to the cheering squad. We have enjoyed the past two glorious years and we hope to enjoy two more years of similar fun and work. 66 SOPHOMORES ll ll LL.LLi1 Ll..LLj i l e ,M- , X, 5' XJ SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS Left to right: Behrendt, Vice-Presiclentg Grenke, Secreraryg Petke, Presidentg Plochar- ski, Treasurerg Albee, V ice-President. The stu- dents were wandering 'about the building looking for their home- rooms. The first day, the P. A. System seemed to be the center of attraction. By the time two weeks had passed, everyone was ac- quainted with the one-way traffic and the different colored passes and what each one stood for. On October 5, each homeroom elected a Representative and an Alternate for the Student Council. This group sold tickets for the Freshman Frolic which was held on November 19. Mr. Massailo Was the Master of Ceremonies, Everyone who went agreed that this was a very successful dance. Meanwhile the football team got under way headed by Co-Cap- tains Bob Vaughn and Paul Castolene. In the first part of December nominations for class officers were handed in. During that week much campaigning was done and many posters were hung on bulletin boards. The results of the election were president, Paul Castoleneg vice- president, Charles Burnsg secretary, Patricia Tracyg and treasurer, Marilou Scott. The basketball team had a very successful season, having Steve White as captain. The cheerleaders lead the team to victory many times, under the directions of Captain Marjorie Sessions. Now we all realize that our freshman year at Bristol High must come to a close. We hope that we shall enjoy the next three years at Bristol High School Senior Building. 69 Freshman Building Freshman Frolic Freshman Big Five Freshman Pep Squad vnu-v 4,-if W9 1' V - ,gf I , a A35 ZW! f ' ,, I 4 '41 '- , V, , 1 A -I fif 3ifi f'f5Zi9+ ' im , i i .. fwgpawf - ' f ' 53 4, Siiiifisxv ' , 4.
