Yes, this was the beginning of our history. Just another history to be written in the minds of men, but this one is different, yes, very different because it is of so much more importance being about us, the class of 1951. We want to tell you some of the reasons why our class is great and consequently why it is the best and most important. Upon entering high school we formed a combination ranging from anything at all, or even nothing, to would-be-philosophers. However, whatever we were when we entered high school, we must admit that the faculty has been rather successful in the ultimate moulding of us. Remember that first day-the countless number of books assigned to each one of us, the disorder and confusion caused by using the wrong staircase, the loud speaker sounding throughout the vast halls, the blue, orange, yellow, and white passes. Ah! but these, which were so important then, are now mere commonplace. Over at Tech, Charlie Ricker could be seen making a mad dash for the lunch- room by slipping through the legs of the upper classmen. At Tech also, there was a tie for the Champion of Tardiness between Ming Micucci and Bill Masci. And then, before we had time to get acquainted with the rules and regula- tions of the buildings, the Freshman Frolic was upon us. This was the first dance for many of us, and it served well its purpose of getting all of us acquainted. To our amazement, we found that the Tech boys were, more or less, sociable and could, more or less, clance. Some few weeks later election time came along and considering the fact that we did not know many of our classmates, we added to our disorder and confusion by electing officers. Roland Dumont became our president, Fred Maiewski and Emil Rindfleish, vice-presidents, Gloria Aylett, secretary, and Joan Morin, treasurer. One of our most entertaining assemblies and one ever-to-be remembered was staged on St. Patrick's Day. Among those participating was that Perry Como of F.H.S. Jim McMahon, singing If You Knock The 'L Out of Kelly . Then there was Ann McMahon, Sylvia McHugh, Lovey Dielendik, and that Irishman from Italy, Luisa Crotti, giving a splendid performance of an Irish jig. This year was also the starting point of such star-studded athletes as, the thorn in the flesh, Ming Micucci, the lively midget, Roland Richard, the Charles Atlas of B.H.S., Nonnie White, and the future halfback of the gridiron, Zemo Dumont. Thus ended our first year at high school, a year to be looked back upon as one of complete excitement and fun, plus a LITTLE work. And now, each one of us setting out for the senior building showed definite signs of a bit of improvement and our would-be-philosophers were well on their way to success. Before we had time to recuperate from the ordeals of the Freshman Building, our Sophomore year was upon us. We entered the senior building like trembling sheep roaming in a vast wilderness. 45 li?- X .. 'Q V as A J 3 ull? 9 ' gg llkli 19 , a 3 W1 r 9 pg 1 4, J' V T ., is .vi . . To our dismay, the presidential year of our high school career again ap- proached and it was time for us Sophomores to choose our favorite sons . The results of this poster displaying campaign showed that Bob Laser was the man with the iob . Gilles Dupont and Bill Masci were to be his assistants. Sylvia McHugh was chosen to sit at the president's side and write minutes, while Mary Spencer had complete possession of the MONEY. Our annual dance, the Sophomore Hop turned out to be a decided success. Entertainment was flowing in from all sides. Doris LeClerc and Winnie Wesner displayed their fine vocal ability, Virginia Lee displayed her piano' playing ability, and Fred Maiewski, Gilles Dupont, and Phil Livedis displayed their-well, they displayed their ability, too. In the field of sports, our football team was slowly showing improvement. Our baseball team vaulted into first place in the C.C.l.L. Fred Maiewski, Bob Laser, and Dick Lugg could be branded as those who made the success possible. Our maiorettes received a fine array of new recruits in their selection of Arlene Palladino, .loan Morin, and Dolly Cayer, while the cheerleaders chose Sylvia McHugh and Toot Masterbone. Another year was thus ended. Our Junior year was one of gaiety and Iiveliness. Our first task as Juniors was to discipline the lowly Sophomores, commonly called iuvenile delinquents. This was one of the duties that we performed quite willingly. After the campaign orators had finished their eloquent speeches, the Junior class decided that Roland, once again , Dumont would be president, George Suydam and Don Goodreault, vice-presidents, Marylou Cavalieri, secretary, and Murielle Fortier, treasurer. Sports this year were most important because we had so many class members who participated. Ming Micucci, Roland Richard, Jerry D'Aprile, and Bobby Carlson again displayed excellent basketball technique while Dumont and White showed their skill on the football field. Baseball also was a sport to add pride and ioy to B.H.S. More maiorettes including Jackie D'Aprile, Charlene Letsinger and Janet Marcelle were added to the squad this year and Gloria Aylett and Gwen Robinson increased the liveliness of the cheerleaders. This year an excellent performance of What a Life was staged in the B.H.S. auditorium. It was a gala affair, among the stars were Maryann Banach, the gym teacher at Central High, Loretta Teevan, acting under the title of Miss Shay, secretary, Barbara Oddy, the typical high school girl named Gertie, and Bob Moris, the typical high school boy named Bill. The Junior Prom was upon us before we had time to get ready for it. Imagine! our class' first formal. The Valentine Day decorations added color and fun to the whole affair. Because of the efforts of Murielle Fortier, chairman of the ar- rangement committee, our prom was the highlight of the social life of the Juniors. The National Honor Society inducted from our Junior class eleven new members who iustly deserved honor for maintaining such high averages. This year also we had three brilliant achievements. Sylvia Magnuson, for her splendid skill in writing, won state honors in the Scholastic contest, Charlie Monson was the recipient of the Harvard Book Prize, and Theresa Kaczka won high honors in the state Latin contest. 46 At Tech, the boys will never forget the feud between the Machine Shop and the Wood Shop under the leadership of Bill Martin and Don Goodreault, respectively. Hey kids! Remember the mixture of water and shellac which acci- dentally fell on foul territory? Three years have now gone by and for most of us, only one more year was left. Clinging to the highest rung on the ladder of success were we in our Senior year. With upraised shoulders and ioyful hearts we entered the sacred middle door as esteemed seniors. We were the bosses now and were mighty proud of the fact, too. But, we soon found out that being the boss was not as easy as we had thought. For our task, we had to elect officers who would be capable of and efficient in carrying us through the trials and difficulties of seniors. This task was successfully accomplished when we elected Roland Richard, president, Bobby Carlson and Eddie White, vice-presidents, Ann McMahon, secretary, and Ann Trillo, treasurer. Our yearbook, the Torch , was shortly well on its way to a successful completion under the direction of Jackie Metro and her assistants, Carmen Levesque and Pete Benoit. Basketball as we all remember, was most successful. Jerry, Ming , Roland, Bobby and Al , and all the rest of the team ought to be more than congratu- lated. Our football team ended with better results than it had had for eight years. White and Dumont really proved that great football players could be made from high school pupils. Our maiorettes, under the guidance of their captain, Arlene Palladino, dis- played fine baton twirling and routines at all the home games. The cheerleaders, with their captain, Sylvia McHugh, manifested their usual fine skill in urging our teams to victory. And then, our Senior Prom. How different it was from all other dances. How much more formal and dignified it was. Remember how beautifully the gym was decorated for the occasion. Almost every senior was there having a gay and wonderful time. On the other hand, our senior year was not one of total happiness. We also had some disappointing facts to face. Certain seniors would be here tonight if the armed services had not needed them. Let us never forget our good-natured Pete Benoit, our musician, Karl Stone, as well as George Gamache, Allan Wolley, Don Goodreault, and Bill Masci. At length the time has come for us to realize that the last and greatest event of our high school career will soon be upon us. Graduation with parents, friends, and the faculty about us, and our high school ambition, a diploma with the seal of B.H.S. upon it. Let us not forget that each and every one of us has a definite place to fill and only we can determine the outcome. Remember our class motto- IN WHAT WE BELIEVE, OUR FUTURE DEPENDS. -Marylou Cavalieri and John Lewis 47 I 0 'N ,...x X' ! iff P f f sy 8 l X f N 3 lfyil Z-S KINGS Q MO Roland Dumont Ji. . B everly Redman The minutes of our high school career started ticking away at eight-thirty on September 9, 1948, in the Freshman Building. Since we didn't have upperclassmen around, we were our own bosses, which delighted us no end. Our social life started early when we, the Little Cheese of High School, attended our first class dance, the Freshman Frolic. We from the Freshman Building became acquainted with our lost comrades from Tech. When November was proclaimed Election Month, all of our up and coming young politicians started their campaigns. Spirited rallies were held with pos- ters, pins, and promises. When election day dawned, droves flocked to the polls to elect their favorites: Henry Richards, president, John Fortunato, vice-president, Gail Molander, sec- retary, and Rose Vedera, treasurer. Meanwhile, the Freshman Basketball team, supported by the enthusiastic cheerleaders, was piling up victory after victory. Mad confusion started us on the second quarter of our High School Clock. With the misleading directions of the upper-classmen, we unfortunate Sophomores were always late for class. By the time 'we were straightened out, we were faced with the Sophomore elections. Using real voting machines, curtains and all, we elected Raymond Churchill, president, Gordon Losey and Richard Mazrek, vice-presidents, Geraldine McCarthy, secretary, and Dot Bidga, treasurer. Much to our delight and satisfaction, Marilyn Allaire and Mary Conlon made the grade as cheerleaders. Joan Frechette, Janet Gustafson, Joan Shea and Dolores Workowski became a part of our skilled band of maior- ettes. Lucille Lasnier and Nancy Rock were taken into the fold of the Torch staff to gain experience in the growing organization. The Sophomores held their own at the Sadie Haw- kins Dance, while the Sophomore Hop high- lighted our social whirl. Joe Cooke and his ever popular band serenaded us with the current hit songs. The beautiful decorations added the extra touch which made it a perfect evening. Starting our Junior year, we rose to great heights-the third floor-much to the dismay of . ly? ,Prlvale Vote The Rlghl lo our sore feet. Through our aches and pains, we managed to hold our Junior elections. By this time we were real professionals with the voting machine, so this time with no trouble whatsoever, the ever popular Gordon Losey became president, capably assisted by Mitch Orzirsky and Rusty Hahn, vice-presidents, Jackie Marcotte, secretary, and Beverly Red- man, treasurer. Several different organizations received contributions from the Junior Class: Edward Bimbo Cercone, basketball, Phyliss Granger and Pat Cascone, cheerleaders, and Rose Vedera and Dot Bidga, maiorettes. With the coming of fall, came the Junior Barn Dance. All dressed up in plaid shirts and blue ieans, we became farmers for a night. This was followed by the Junior Prom, which was ac- claimed the best and most beautiful dance in many years. Jerry Burns and Barbara Dayton were unanimously voted Prince and Princess of the Prom. On the threshold of our fourth and final quarter, we all hope that it will be as happy and prosperous as the past three quarters have been. THE END Oh, boy! !-And l'm thirsty. N , gk iii N- ia.: ' 'ggi 5 ab ML ww M SOPHOMORE CLASS ln September, 1949, there entered the Freshman Building a group of students, who were destined to make history, or so we thought. We reveled in the fact that we had no upper-classmen here. Our social whirl began when we held our annual Fresh- man Frolic, which most of the Tech boys attended. Dressed to kill, we all enjoyed a very pleasant and memorable evening. To manage the affairs for our class, we elected our officers. President Edward Gas- ki, Vice-Presidents, Joseph Roy and Robert Armitage, Secretary, Louise Frechettep Treasurer, Jack Driscoll. They did a swell iob and helped to make our class a good one. Meanwhile our Freshman Basketball team was making outstanding news. Because the team piled up so many victories it was certain that the Bristol High team would benefit from our class. The Freshman Cheerleaders gave that necessary urge to the team. Starting our Sophomore year, our egos, like Humpty Dumpty's, suliered a great crash. We had bossed ourselves in the Freshman Building, but now we had to learn to take orders and teasing-much to our dismay. Through our suffering and embarrass- ment, we managed to get to the library to elect our favorites: President Eugene Zahnke, Vice-Presi- dent, George L'Heureux, Secretary, Frances Vasal- avage, Treasurer, Norman Beland. When it came time to choose maiorettes and cheerleaders, several girls from our class met the requirements: Maiorettes, Janet Daniels, Audrey Tomcheski, and Joyce Green, Cheerleaders, Janet Bird and Pat Onofrio. Scratch Gaski, Claude Fortier, and Harry Peters started play- ing basketball, this on the B.H.S. team which was better than ever. As a highlight of our activities, our Sophomore Hop was held in all its splendor. In a beautifully decorated gym we danced to Al DeCaro's ever popular band. With this combination of good music and a swell crowd, the dance was one of the biggest hits of the year. We all felt sad when we lost two swell girls from our class: Nancy Larson moved to New Britain, and Mary Garrett became a Maryland girl. Looking ahead to our next two years we are all certain that we shall enioy ourselves as much as we have these past two glorious years, in dear old B.H.S. We'll ne'er forget our captain Gallant Jerry D'Aprile Great odds, have never dimmed his star, And we'll bet they never will. Ah! yes, what happy memories these!
