We Freshmen were not disappointed. High School was all we expected it to be. We had a class dance especially for us, the Buck Privates of High School. At least two-thirds attended the Freshman Frolic and the boys from Tech met their classmates who hailed from the Freshman Building As time rolled on and November came around, the main topic in the halls was the coming elections. The rallies were held in all their splendor. We didn't know we had politicians in our class, but we found out when the campaign speeches were made Election day came and everyone trooped to the polls: when the ballots were counted it was easy to see who the winners were: Henry Richards, president: john Fortunato vice-president: Gail Molander, secretaryg and Rose Vedera, treasurer All this time the Freshman basketball squad was practicing to make its debut, and the boys put on a good showing. They played a full schedule and won most of their games. Inez White and her fellow cheerleaders were right behind the boys, cheering them to victory. Not to be left out, the girls organized a basketball team under the leadership of co-captains Ellen Red Parmelee and Lois Moulton, followed by a squad of sixteen girls. The girls played bravely, but they lost all their games but one. After leaving the confines of the Freshman Building we, the present sophomores, didn't think it too hard to find our way around the corridors of the Senior Building. That is, after a few days of wrong directions given us by the juniors and Seniors. The end of September and that meant elections again. Posters and signs helped bring the sophomores to the polls. If we thought that we had politicians when we were Freshmen, I don't know what you would call them now. The speeches were great and so was election day because for the first time we used a real voting machine. The' officers elected were: Raymond Churchill, president: Gordon Losey and Richard Mazrek, vice-presidents: Geraldine McCarthy, secretary: and Dorothy Bigda, treasurer. WVe were all happy to hear that Mary Conlon and Marilyn Allaire made the grade as cheerleaders: it's nice to see them on the basketball courts leading us in the cheers. Our handsome Sophomore strutters include joan Frechette, Dolores Gootchie XVor- kowski, and joan Shea, who were chosen as majorettes. Much to our surprise and pleasure we found that we would have another dance, the Sophomore Hop, which was held on january 27. The Gym was decorated to its rafters with crepe paper. We danced to the music of joe Cooke and his band. We might add that a gala time was had by all. Our first two years were fun and we know our next two will be filled with just as many laughs. We look forward to our junior and Senior years, and we will work hard to make our class a credit to Bristol High School. iwyu., -2 I W vs ,A 5 ,Q J fp 2.3 I -K D e f, Y? M s Eg -T. Standing: Louise Frechette, Secretary: jack Driscoll, Treasurer. That's us! The Greenies of B. H. S. When we first tame to the Freshman Building we were dazzled and bewildered. The resigned looks we had seen, earlier that fateful day, on the faces of the upperclassmen had done nothing to bolster our morale. But, in spite of it all, we came through our hrst year with fiying colors. To prove this we elected Scratch QI-Ionest Ed?j Gaski to presidency. To help him, we put Bob Armitage and joe Roy in as vice-presidents. To help the helpers, Louise Frechette and jack Driscoll were elected as secretary and as treasurer, respectively. They proved to be very capable of handling our affairs and gave us our first dance, the Freshman Frolic. Ah, the Freshmen Frolic! XVhat memories it brings back. The shy boys from Tech, aided and abetted by Mr. St. Lawrence, actually danced with the girls. This was a definite improvement over grammar school and helped to make the Freshmen Frolic a huge success. Our cheerleaders were so peppy, they even had the clocks stopping to watch. These girls were: Nancy Larsen, Beverly XVhite, Dixie Lee Vaughn, Ann Powers, Pat Onofrio, Shirley Gromoshak, Roselyn Given. Dolly Giovanazzo, and Mary Ann Fiorillo. Nancy Larsen as captain, ably led the girls through their paces. Having mounted the first rung in our ladder we, now garbed as Sophomores, approach the Golden Portals of the Senior Building. lf the next years are as beneficial and as much fun as this one, there is sure to be many a good time during the next three years. 60 :WE 3 ff? 9 H, n C x N N WMV ki' X A J , 11... ll. 1? gi W, mil ' if 94 1 9? These capable students lessened many a burden for the upper-classmen. This is the first time juniors have had the opportunity to help make ready this publica- tion, and at the same time obtain such valuable experience. A tentative Torch staff has been nominated for next year. Good luck, kids! To all the underclassmen who have helped make our yearbook a success, we ex- tend our sincere appreciation. It seems unfair to single out any one person, but to these juniors: jackie Metro, Carmen Levesque, Phyllis Israel, Alohn Burroughs, Bob YVish- neski and Charles Monson: and sophomores: Lucille Lasnier and Nancy Rock, who gave so much of their time, we give our thanks. S. students trotted home in their cool cottons, our pros- pective football team labored under the weight of heavy padding and strenuous training. But Ol' Father Time and Lady Luck went into a huddle and came up leaving our team with much experience, many injuries, and an invincible desire to win. This was a combination that would not bring us many good tidings. So, even under the capable leadership of co-captain johnny Monahan and jack Carpenter, our team could only stack one win against seven losses. Ably led by co-captains Dick Hines and Bucky Dunn and sporting a greatly-improved aggregation as compared with last year's team, they chalked up 5 wins and 1 tie against 6 losses. Co-Captains Norman LaMothe and john Broshevitch have led the swimming team through an average season. This year we had the largest squad in history with thirty boys out for berths on the first team. In time, with the squad as large as it is, a good team could fall into the hands of Bristol High and maybe it could take a C.C.l.L. championship and even advance farther. Who knows? Regular swimmers are Norman LaMothe, john Broshevitch, Robert Irwin, Ray Beloin, jon Hall, Allan Peters, Allen Woolley, Emil Roberge, Harry Fitzgerald, George Suydam, and Robert Dumond. Letterman Eddy Veilleaux was sidelined this year because of surgical treatment. Back and forth across the net the tennis balls fly. Holding the rackets are the members of the Tennis Team. There are no veterans this year, but give them time and we are sure they will prove themselvs. The team had twelve matches, played with West Hartford, Meriden, Manchester, Middletown, Hamden, Torrington, and New Britain. In the field ol girls' sports. first comes soccer in the fall. The girls lrom each class lorm their own team. ln the winter season. the girls can go out lor basketball. swimming. or volleyball. Of the three, volleyball is the most popular though swimming is rapidly coming up. As spring rolls around. so does softball. Again as in the other sports. earh class has its own team. As many girls are really tomboys at heart and love to bat a ball around. this is a favorite recreation. Also in the spring and fall there are arthery and tennis. There is an archery tournament and if enough girls go out lor it a tennis tournament. If a girl manages to get two-hundred and fifty points in her four years. she is eligible for her li. Ifat-li sport in which she participates two-thirds of the time is worth twenty-live points. In a tournament as you might have in basketball, volleyball, and softball. each time a team wins. everyone on the team is given five points. The storekeepers. referees. and umpires are each given ten points every time they are on the job. Among the Seniors are quite a few who will get their 15's this year. If a team wins a tournament. or in swimming, a meet. the members reeeive their numerals. The Seniors. while they didnt win everything, showed their good sportsmanship by going out and having a team for every sport. 7' mrs , P .If F-I 44: IP' ,n 4 ,. -sf' .qi-ul .- 1 -.
