Again the club sponsored its annual Semi-Formal which proved to be one ot the most colorful events ot the school year. This year, because of the war, a great interest has been taken in the study ot the Allied countries around the Mediterranean Sea. and the French colonies around Tunisia and Algeria. From the proceeds ot a sport dance the club also contributed toward an ambulance. '1 L lah lee Arr la l4:,er l', l 71 , 11,1 A 5 rzr lrlarfr. 1 Nl me Valeductory The Responslbuhtues of a Bristol Hugh School Graduate Salutatory As the general theme for our commencement we have chosen Brrstol Hlgh School rn Retrospect a subrect whrch w1ll rnterest many of the audtence who are graduates of th1s school Whlle most of the talks w1ll descrrbe the growth of B H S from 1905 when Mr Cottle who 15 also we mrght say gradu atmg Wllh us hrst arrrved to take over the dut1es of prtncrpal I want to tell you ol the hlstory of our school before that date If I were to ask some of you how old th1s school rs the reply would probably be Well rt s pretty old lt seems as rt we ve always had a hrgh school 1n Brrstol However the real answer to th1s questron may be found IH a thrck volume contarnrng the old publlc records of Brrstol In 1878 rn hrs annual report on schools Leverett Grrggs the actlng school v1s1tor wrote th1s We want a hrgh school worthy of the name that shall furnlsh tu1t1on fee to all parts of the town that wrsh to emoy 1ts prtvrleges At th1s trme hrgh school meant only a further contrnuatron of the grade schools all puptls havmg to pay turtton The two alternatrves to remedy th1s unsattsfactory srtuatron were tll to drscontrnue hrgh school entrrely or C23 to establrsh a town Hlgh School The latter suggestron seemed most advrsable Nothrng much was done however except a lot of talkrng and the whole ldea rema1ned on the shell for a number of years Most of the populace were worr1ed about the taxes whrch would have to be pald rf a hrgh school were to be establrshed Therefore rt was not untll the year l887 that Brstol Hrgh only two teachers and two rooms 1n the South Srde School A grand total ol 33 freshman entered rn the frrst year makrng 77 puprls rn all These trgures seem lncredrbly small when we stop to conslder the number of puprls who are now enrolled rn lhlS school Perhaps you would be rnterested 1n the hrst graduatron S1nce the com mencements of the common schools and the hrgh school were combrned the exercrses were held at Mrchaels Opera House a huge burldrng whrch used La stand on the corner of Church and Laurel Streets That ntght the burld mg was hlled to overflowrng A group comparable to about Sf ot the graduates tonrght rn srze was graduatlng then A grammar school class ren dered several songs rn as the report put rt a very acceptable manner Another class under the d1rect1on of a Mrss Smrth gave an exhrbrtton of calrsthenlcs As IS usual today several essays were read by selected mem bers of the hrgh school graduatrng class Secretary Hlne ot the State Board of Educatron and the actrng school vrsrtor both addressed the class and frnally the cha1rman of the board presented the drplomas Though the tradrtron of commencement has been somewhat changed srnce then the essentral tactors remarn the same It was not long before the school became too large for tts trny quarters and tn 1890 con tructron was begun on a new bulldrng whlch was occupred the next year Thrs butldrng most of you know now as the Freshman Hrgh School on Summer Street although a wrng has srnce been added From here rt may easlly be seen how steadrly the Brrstol Hrgh School has conttnued to grow If the honorable Leverett Grtggs were able to se th1s school now he would hnd here the reahzatron ot hrs dreams when he wrote We want a Hrgh School worthy of the name Betty Hannon 84 1 I I . . . . , , I I - ' I , .
