CLASS HISTORY The class of '57 will bring fame to Bristol Senior High School. These were the words that echoed through my mind as I left Andrews School after Commencement Exercises on June 6, 1957. As I was about to cross the threshold of Andrews, I noticed a man was standing off to the left of the door. This man, who was short and stout and wore a suit of tweed with a soft-hat that was perched on his head, called me. To me his face did not seem familiar, nor was his speech, but without hesitation he introduced himself as a talent scout for the program, “The Typical Senior High School Class of America . Questions were rushing through my mind, such as, What does he want with me on such a night as this?” I soon found out, as he began to explain that our class was an unusual and unique one, and by him and the sponsors of his program, the class of 1957 of Bristol Senior High School was chosen to attend a dinner in New York. Of course I, the secretary of our class, was to read the unusual class history. September, a day of excitement and joy. Yes, we, as sophomores, were entering Bristol Senior High. An assembly was called in the Auditorium by our principal, Mr. John L. Burke, who contemplated and expounded a list of rules and regulations, by the observance of which we would prolong our stay at Colt. Weeks rushed by, and soon it was time to elect officers. To represent our class were: President, Leonard Calandra; Vice President, Anthony Mas-cena; Treasurer, Angela Allaire; anil I, Hazel Ouellette, Secretary. Executive Committee: Evelyn Menezes, Peter Natale, Ralph Palma, Paul Carreiro, Anthony DaPonte. Midyears finally arrived, but smiles were not effervescent. After crestfallen hopes, a more exultant day came into view — the Sophomore Hop, which was held in May. This was our first social event during our high school days. The summer sun was tremendcusly overshadowed by that dreadful'word finals”. But we were refreshed by a two-month summer vacation. The “best year of our lives” started when we returned to school in September, as the “Know-it-all juniors . Our officers for that year were: President, Herculano Falco; Vice President, Anthony DaPonte; Secretary, Francis Terra; and I, Hazel Ouellette, Treasurer. Elected to the Executive Board were: Peter Natale, William Murphy, Gordon Phipps, Martha Cabral, Veronica Nunes, Nancy Santulli. Throughout the days of our junior year, regular activities, such as, football and basketball games, dances, and so forth were enjoyed by all, even those who helped cheer the boys of Colt High on. Whispers were heard from all corners of Colt and Andrews, in the locker rooms, and almost anywhere on the stair-cases, What is the color of your gown?” “I’m going with the cutest boy!” Have you been asked?” The class officers were busy decorating the Colt Auditorium for that memorable event — the Junior Prom. Oh, 1 remember well how beautiful the auditorium looked with the colors of brown and gold, and above the stage a florid plaque bearing the 34 numerals — 1957. Memory of such an event as this will never be erased from our hearts. As in our sophomore year, the same procedure of finals was followed and our last summer vacation from Colt was forth coming. September again, and we, as “Mighty Seniors , the class of 1957, returned to Colt for the last time, no longer the “Know-it-all Juniors”, of one year ago. Election of officers was in process for the last time also. President, Kenneth Murray; Vice President, Anthony DaPonte; Treasurer; Ann Burke; and I, Hazel Ouellette, Secretary. Executive members were: Angela Allaire, Anna Cavallaro, William Smith, Anthony Nastri, Peter Natale, Herculano Falco. On October 17 we received our class rings. First to the left, then to the right, in a waving motion, we would flash our rings so that 11 could see, especially the underclassmen. Is my hair in place? “Is my collar straight” Those were the questions that were being asked on December 5 and 6, when we posed for individual pictures. In a day or two we were all bending over the “best proofs”. After our Thanksgiving Vacation, the so-called actors” began rehearsing for the play entitled Line of Scrimmage”, presented on January 17 and 18, under the benevolent and capable direction of Mrs. Donovan. On April 4 and 5, the Class of 1957 also presented the operetta, “Gypsy Troubadour”. Both productions achieved great success. June was here in no time at all. Then Class Day — the day the history, prophecies, and wills revealed our latent secrets and ambitions. The banquet was held in the Colt Auditorium, where a delicious dinner was enjoyed. Then, close at hand, that epoch of seriousness arrived — Graduation. This wistful June night had come at last, but as we sang our Alma Mater, we, the class of 1957, knew that all three years at Colt were the best of our lives. Then as the accompianist struck the last note of this solemn song, all the good times came to an end. Hazel Ouellette SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS First row: A. Allaire, H. Ouellette, K. Murray. A. It was a long and tedious task, but by August 23, 1907, work on the building was progressing. Workmen were completing the terra cotta floor, arches and the job of erecting the steel girders for the roof hail already begun. During the month of October of the same year, coppersmiths completed the work of placing pressed copper around the six windows on the Hope Street side of the structure. Also, two copper wreathes were placed on the roof against the copper frames. The school was to be finished by June of 1908 but, due to lack of materials, was completed in 1909. By this time, the auditorium was a network of steel staging, reaching almost to the roof, in order to afford facilities for placing ornamental plastering, with which the ceiling of this room was to be covered. Inside the from entrance, workmen were busy putting in position the white marble with which the inside walls of the hall were to be completely adorned. The baseboards of all the school rooms were to be of black marble. It was already November when this was being done. The steel stairway frames throughout the structure were already in position. In front part of the building were located four classrooms and a library on the second floor and on the third floor five good-sized classrooms. Work by this time was progressing slowly and it was not until May of 1908 that by conversion the wooden floors were fire-proofed. All the marble had been laid with the exception of that of the entrance. The placing of the pillars was scheduled to be completed by July 1, 1908. Many of the allegorical designs were done by hand by the marble workers of the marble yards in Providence, Rhode Island. Changes in the original plans cost Mr. Colt about $75,000 which brought the cost of the building up to a quarter of a million dollars, including that of the site. When completed, Colt Memorial was considered the most expensive high school in Rhode Island and one of the finest in New England. The schooner, H. P. Hallock,” arrived from New Jersey on June 7, 1908, with 240 tons of tile arches. Construction progressed, and the roof was completed within a few weeks. During the month of September the school was considered to be used for three towns of the county and also the land was graded and the building was completed except for the installation of the clocks. On January 12th, 1909, Colonel Colt formally gave the school to the town of Bristol. A school committee meeting followed and Mr. Charles H. Manchester, Secretary of Industrial Company, presented the following letter on behalf of Colonel Colt: New York, Dec. 30, 1908 To the School Committee of the Town of Bristol, R. I. Gentlemen: It is my pleasure to offer to the town of Bristol, through you, the building which I have erected as a memorial of my mother, Theodora De Wolf Colt, and the land whereon the same is situated, to be used by the town for the purpose of conducting and maintaining therein a free public school. Accompanying this letter is an executed deed conveying the land and building for the purpose, and releasing to the town any claim which I may have for damages arriving from the proceeding, whereby a part of the land condemned for school purposes. I trust that the Electors of the town may pass the votes necessary for the acceptance of the lot and building, and that this gift may prove of assistance to the town in furnishing to its youths an advanced education. Respectfully yours, (Signed) Samuel P. Colt If the building is used other than a free public school, the grantor or his heirs shall have the right to take back the building and the land. An inspection of the new high school was conducted on March 11 12th of 1909. Through the generosity of Colonel Samuel P. Colt, the students of Bristol Senior High School have been and are deeply indebted to him for helping to further the education of the citizens of Bristol. R. Carlone and J. Ruggiero THE STATUES’ ADDRESS IN THE WORDS OF LINCOLN Two score and four years ago, Mr. Colt brought forth on these school grounds two everlasting students, conceived of iron, and dedicated to the proposition of illustrating education. One was heard to say to the other: “Now you are engaged in the great process of learning, testing whether you, or any, so conceived and dedicated, can long endure. You are met on the grounds of Colt Memorial in that process of learning. You have come to dedicate a portion of your life to education which could only be obtained from those who have pioneered that you might follow. It is altogether fitting and proper that you do this. “But, in a larger sense, you must attain an education capable of assisting you to a better life in this rapidly progressing world. The Alumni, living and dead, who struggled here, have contributed much to this cause. You will note and long remember what we speak of. You should never forget what was obtained here. It is for you and the students, rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which remains before you. “It is rather for you to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before you, that from us, two everlasting students, sculptured or iron, you take heed of the inspiration for which we were placed on these grounds; that you highly resolve that we were not placed here in vain, although we are constructed of an imperishable material. We have observed the progress and advancement of those educated here, as they pass by in their daily walks of life, and that education of the people shall not perish from the earth. Thomas Vendituoli and William Smith 12B AN ANGEL IN WHITE THE CANDIDATE Is this a vision or can it be true That an angel is watching over me? A cheerful smile and eyes very blue, A halo so bright, I can hardly see. She moves like a shadow, as if wings has she, Her voice so low as she talks with another And hands, so soft, comfort and refresh me, My pulse beats as if we were lovers. My mind clears up and sights emerge at last For my angel is a nurse that's so real She tok! me to sleep and forget the past. He was a man of great integrity You could tell it by the way he spoke. Clear and distinguished was his voice. People from miles around came to see the candidate. He was the people s choice and You could tell it from the noise. There on the rostrum was a man Who filled my heart with great admiration And I couldn't cast my vote for him. Oh, why am I not twenty-one Instead of seventeen? By M.L. Sylvia For since you see that I am just a boy Visions of angels are hopes of joy. By Beth McCaughey 12B 59 LOOKING BACK PEACE Why is it that my love remains. While yours does not replenish mine? Another love now I can claim. But yours will last through endless time. As I read your written line, I felt as though you were so near. My hand reached out only to find. That you were not beside me here. I feel as though when in a dream, I knew your love was as mine, Long ago to me it seems. But, I care not for time. I know my love for you shall be. As endless as the foam-crested sea. By Jane Maetoza 12B Uprisings and conflicts, those all of us dread, O'er the world a curtain of gloom has spread. What causes these crises on this war-torn sphere, When the U. N. cries Peace” for all to hear? A mighty grasping power glots at the West, Waiting for the moment her power to wrest, The crack in the iron curtain grows greater each day, Behind it many people seek freedom, they say. Will all this erupt into a Third World War, And destroy the earth to its very core? 1 believe a great leader may yet arise. And keep the hope of civilization forever alive, A leader with wisdom far greater than others, Will encourage a world where all men are brothers, Call it Utopia, a world of energy untiring. Where there is great freedom, forever undying. And o'er our wide wondrous world will forever reign peace, And war and conflict will forever cease. Alas, it's a dream, a fancy of few. But who knows, someday that hope may even come true! By D. Alves 12B SONNET A STORM Oh, barren trees, thou hast me mystified To see thee in the winter without leaves, Your fruitless arms stretched up toward the sky As if in prayer for leaves which now you grieve. But spring is near and soon birds will appear On every branch new life will come at last, No longer will the frost present a fear, No trees with leafless boughs as in the past. Then autumn comes; we find her colors blind And sights that we have never seen before. The cycle of a tree has neared its end It’s something we’ll remember evermore. Oh, nature may have many oddities! To me there's nothing more beautiful than trees. Why — Do I anticipate a storm with such intense feeling? I know not, except that it gives me much satisfaction, Because I am made to admire power and its dealings. Because it causes so many, many different distractions, Because I love the wind and rain and whistling sounds. I know of nothing I would rather do than stand up tall, Alone ... all alone . . . just I against the elements . . . Let the wind blow and branches mixed with spray fall, For I realize there is someone greater than all. I love to watch the turmoil of the sea, tossing, breaking . . Nature's dark, mysterious clouds threatening to burst. I know that I am safe and sound just where I stand . . . Safe and sound ... is this possible? Am 1 ever, really? From one thing or another I am never really safe, so . . . Other than that, I know not why I love a storm. 60 By Vicki Balzano 12B By T. Venditouli TEENAGER'S PRAYER A LOOK AHEAD Light our way with courage, pave the road with truth; And plant along the roadside tolerance of youth. Guide us by your faith, direct us with your trust; When we journey on, please let us, Lord, be honest, strong and just. By Sheila Barrett I2B 1 was often told by the old and the wise That life” was a series of trials in disguise. Many lamented the day I'd go out on my own, And leave school and the friends I had known; But somehow life” didn't affect me that way, I was to enter a world free and gay! With happiness there at my fiingers' end And time on pleasures galore to spend. But sooner than soon the day arrived. And glad as I was that I had survived, I wondered ... as I heard a friend talk, Would life be only a gentle, peaceful walk?” By Laura Cordeiro 12C NO TIME TO SPARE FAITH Coming down the steep hills In between the beautifully colored trees I came across my good friends Who were busy doing their day's work. Answering to my coming Was the littlest of them all. With his tail high in the air And his paws full of nuts. Looking in the storehouse He seemed to have enough for a year, But knowing my squirrel friends. Only snow stops their work. What will the coming spring for me hold When winter's bleak and gloomy days are gone? The breeze so gentle and the trees of gold And rushing streams and birds with gleeful song. These days so quickly come and then they go With laughter, sorrows, happiness and friends. They pass sometimes forgotten, but I know Their memories will ne'er in my true heart end. I dream of things created from above. Flowers and trees with new buds do prevail, Spring brings forth new instances of love But the presence of the Great Creator ne’er does fail. I ask myself quite anxiously “What's in store? The quietly I trust my faith forever more. 61 Raul Oliveira 12A By Maureen Hutchison 12B FOOTBALL 1956 FOOTBALL TEAM First row, left to right: Coach Nash, A. Nastri, A. Da Ponte, P. Xatale. R.
