,Qin WM' I 2 L its COMMANDI GoFF1CER Commander Andrew J. Pitts was born in Paterson New Jersey on April 16, 1952. A graduate of Ramapti High School, Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, he enlisted in the United States Navy in January, 1972 and sub. sequently attended the University of Utah under the Navy Enlisted Scientific Education Program, gradu- ating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology in December 1975. He com. pleted Nuclear Propulsion training in February 1977, His first sea assignment was in USS South Carolina QCGN 375, homeported in Norfolk, Virginia, Where he served as Electrical Division Officer, Auxiliaries Offi. cer, and Damage Control Assistant from August 1977 until August 1980. From August 1980 until August 1982 he served as Director of Electrical Specialized Instruction at the Naval Nuclear Power School, Orlando, Florida. After graduating with distinction from the Surface Warfare Officer's Department Head course, he was assigned as Operations Officer in USS CONYNGHAM CDDG 175 from June 1983 until January 1985. From March 1985 until April 1987 he served as Main Pro- pulsion Assistant in USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER QCVN 695. Commander Pitts commanded USS Taurus QPHM 35 from August 1987 until August 1989, and then served for two years as Executive Officer, Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit, Ballston Spa, New York. ' Commander Pitts earned a Master of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the United States Naval War College in 1992, and served as an instructor at the Senior Officer Ship Material Readiness Course in Newport, Rhode Island prior to command. In August 1993 Commander Pitts relieved as Com- manding Officer of USS BRISCOE QDD 9775, home- ported in Norfolk, Virginia. Commander Pitts' decorations and awards include two Meritorious Service Medals, three Navy Com- mendation Medals, two Navy Achievement Medals, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, the Navy Good Con- duct Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, and various service medals and ribbons. Commander Pitts is the son of Mrs. Carol Pitts of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey and is married to the former Kathleen Galland of Salt Lake City, Utah- They have two daughters, Amy and Lisa. V.
