Now the time for school to reopen has arrived. On August 23, the Brinkley High School came back to life. Today we begin classes for the 79-80 school year. There were many familiar faces and many new. Some were students and others were teachers. For many people it was good to be back and for many others, just another dreadful moment. The bell rang and they gathered in the gymnasium for the first assembly of the year. At that moment, we began the DAWN OF THE k J W t V 2 School Life STUDENT LIFE AT BHS 4 School Life School Life 5 mmm mm mm bLbl uaan£) Buiuioaaiuof-i NNVwno vsn Wj l ;}$::! l |V. Homecoming 9 Homecoming 11 Being a Homecoming maid at Brinkley High is really special. It means a lot to the girls. The maids are picked by the Tiger team itself. Members of the team escort the maids during the coronation. Lisa Myers’ escorts were Kirk Myers and Curtis Chunn and Amy Stewmon’s escorts were Joe Riffey and Greg Lynch. Pam Burnett’s escorts were Anthony Walton and Terry Miller and Lisa Malham’s escorts were Casey Smith and Donny Wilkison. Grace Washington was escorted by Larry Daniels and Sam Pearson and Scarlett Crafford was escorted by Harold Fitts and Cliff Files. Burna Washington’s escorts were Prince Smith and Alan Scott and Dana Mann’s were Bruce Swindle and Jamie Cook. Queen Lisa Oltmann was escorted by Joel Wilkison and Randy Butcher. Each class worked with unprecedented care and diligence. Nevertheless, a malfunction in the Juniors’ “Tiger Queen’’ steamboat crushed their hopes of winning the float competition when it caught on fire at the parade’s onset. Flames and billowing smoke, which nearly obscured the float from view, were the cause of the float being described as “up in smoke”. The Seniors captured first place for their Tiger Railroad” with the Freshmen receiving second place. The Grand Marshals were Sara Reed and Enoch Jones. 14 Homecoming mv- BR'NJCIE Homecoming 15 athionairr _ Beaut MISS B.H.S. It takes hard work and a lot of planning for everything they do. It also takes a dedicated council. They used a skit entitled “The Monster Mash” to start off the year. Homecoming is always a busy part of the year. Student Council had a car bash for the students that don’t get along with certain teachers. One day everyone dressed in western clothes to go along with the theme “Western Day”. Cowboys and cowgirls were taken to the Student Council Jail all day long by the Student Council sheriffs. To keep people quiet, “hushbuttons” were sold. If someone wearing a “hushbutton” talked to the opposite sex, they had to give that person the “hushbutton”. To end all of the special activities, they sponsered the “water balloon fight”. It was a real splash in the memories of Homecoming. Also, the Student Council worked hard decorating the gym for the cornation. Next on their list was Halloween. The movie “Race With the Devil” was shown for the scary effect. A powder puff football game was played after Thanksgiving. Many girls practiced hard and played a good game. The Senior and Junior girls were victorious over the Sophomores and Freshmen. It’s a hot fad in America these days and something new using the blue denim comes out each year. This year something really different has appeared. It’s the designer jeans. Calvin Klein, Gloria Vanderbilt, Sassoon. Pierre Cardin and more. They seem to be regular jeans with the designer touch. A label with their name on the outside has brought designers out into the open with teens. Something else to change the style. Longer jeans rolled up into a cuff. Some even worn with high heeled shoes for a dressy effect. Jeans are worn to more and more places each day. But, unbelievably so, some people aren’t as fortunate to have the blue denim. The Iron Curtain has shielded Comun-ist Eastern Europe from the fads and styles of the western culture for twenty-two years. This appeared in a newspaper: MOSCOW (UPI) - The United States has won the jeans war. After years of futile Russian attempts to turn out copies of American jeans, the Soviet Union is asking three major American firms to bid for a contract to build a factory that will turn out millions of blue-jeans a year. Three American companies- the makers of Lee, Levi and Wrangler jeans- have submitted proposals for a plant in Moscow. One of the U.S. negotiators said Wednesday the Soviet Union has budgeted $7.5 million for the project and hopes to turn out 2 million or 3 million pairs of jeans annually. TOP TEN MOVIES 1. The production began as a learning process - memorizing lines, experimenting with equipment, composing camera angles, and preparing budgets Money was raised in a variety of ways, including raffles, candy and ornament sales, and donations from many interested and sympathetic people. Publicity became important when Roger Cooper of Channel 5 in Memphis and Les Bolton of Channel 7 in Little Rock came to interview the company while on location This facilitated awareness of how serious these students were about the project. The students were not the only school personnel to be involved with the film. Business teacher Elma Williams sponsored the group, and school counselor James Branch participated as a cast member. Both supplied much-needed enthusiasm and encouragement and acted as cheerleaders for the company. As Mr Branch said in a recent interview, “This project is important — one that every school in the state can look upon as outstanding.” Clockwise from top: Channel 5 interviews the crew. Coaches and players took different stands on the issue, but all still had to learn the new game style. The Tigerettes adjusted quite well, although quite a few problems in the first game hampered their play. From that game on no serious problems arose and they came on strong. There are little hands all eager To do anything you do And a little girl who’s dreaming Of the day she’ll be like you. You’re the little girl’s idol You’re the wisest of the wise In her little mind about you No suspicions ever rise. She believes in you devoutly Holds all that you can say and do She will say and do in your way When she’s grown up like you. There’s a wide-eyed little girl Who believes you’re always right And her ears are always open And she watches day and night. You are setting an example Every day in all you do For that little girl who's waiting To grow up to be just like you. LOIS ETHERIDGE We take great pride in dedicating the 1980 TIGER to Mrs. Lois Etheridge, who after a carreer of teaching that spans 23 years, plans to make this her last year of service and retire. We would like to recognize Mrs. Etheridge for being an outstanding teacher as well as a friend. She has taught at B.H.S. for fourteen years where her duties included choral music at one time, as well as English. She is currently head of the English department and her main course of instruction is English 11 where she has been instrumental in preparing juniors for the rigors of senior English. Mrs. Etheridge is the daughter of a Baptist minister and is married to Jubal Etheridge. After attending Quachita Baptist University, she received her degree from the University of Central Arkansas at Conway. She has three children: Eddie, Louis and Mary Lynn and three grandchildren - all of whom she is very proud. Mrs. Etheridge loves to crochet, arrange flowers, and read. She also plays the organ and piano. One of the highlights of her life was her trip to Europe in 1977. After retirement she plans to pursue her many other interests. We thank her for giving her services, unselfishly, as she has touched the lives of the Alumni of B.H.S. We will surely miss this remarkable worn- 82 Appreciation Above Left: James Parish, Counselor. Above: The line has started to move and in less than fifteen minutes all students are served. Right: he serving line Is well organized and efficient. Logistics What does it mean and what part does it play in our system? It means the presence of the school’s many routine necessities along with the people providing these services, whose mere presense and duties are often times taken for granted simply because of the everyday nature of their work. It means dependable, reliable people who see to it that the physical workings of our system continues to provide for our daily needs. It means having a well balanced lunch; a bus driver, not only for the daily routes, but for after hours and weekend activities; and a warm building, a clean campus, and sufficient preparation of facilities for academics, extra-curricular activities, and special events. But, most of aril, it means that we are always provided with a comfortable and pleasant working and learning atmosphere. Bus Drivers and Food Services 191 We looked back and remembered the happy times, feeling the reward of hard work and dedication. At other times we felt all alone, isolated in the midst of a crowd. Our existence was one of constant new beginnings and continous endings that filled our lives and our memories. It was our year, molded by the vast and diverse character of who we were and had become. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Merritt and the staff their understanding and for the hard woirk they put in during the holidays. Mr Merritt has done an outstanding job with the yearbook this year and we owe him a great deal. Our photographers deserve a gold medal for their cooperation when I would hand them a list ot pictures to develop. They would accept it gladly along with a smile, but I knew they really wanted to stuff it down my throat. My job as editor has been an experience I would never trade, although I have had my doubts along with the rest of the staff. But, through thick and thin, we still have our nerves, our hair is still intact with our heads, and the scratch marks on the walls are fading. I believe we have accomplished what we set out to do and that was to give you a book that will store your memories forever.
