STUDENT LIFE 25 Activities Increase Enjoyment In Languages French, the third most widely spoken language in the world, and Latin, the basis of most modem languages and the foundation of our own, were again offered this year with the new addition of a second year Latin class. Students studied French through the aural-oral approach. They listened to native speakers on the electronic lab, imitated that speech and gradually learned to read and write the target language. An understanding of grammatical structure was achieved through drills and workbook exercises. With films and outside reading, students learned about French culture from pen-pals in France. In Latin 1 syntax and basic forms were stressed. In addition to the structure of the language the influence of Latin on other languages was emphasized. The greatest emphasis was placed on English words derived from Latin. In Latin II, however, students concentrated on the Roman way of life, their religion, their leaders, their myths and history, along with a reinforcement of grammar studied in first year Latin. TOP: Jimmy Parr and Stacy Wilhite pin up a map of France. LEFT: Jeanette Wynne enters Mid South Fair Talent Contest as Helen of Troy. RIGHT: French I students, Missy Fowler, Lynn Anderson, Marc Dedman, Harrison Armstrong, Herbert Lang, make use of electronic lab to increase understanding. Fine Arts Department Attracts Talented Students Very popular were the art courses, which covered color theory, sculpture, paper mache, ceramics, drawing, design, printing, painting, and special projects. Highlight of the year was the annual public an show in May. Hours of practice resulted in finished performances by the band and by the choral groups, which consisted of the choir, the ensemble, and a small group known as the Madrigal singers. Success and popularity of the choral music department was evidenced by the fact that its White Christmas program on December 20 was taped by Channel 6 for television viewing. The spring concen consisted of popular music and music from Broadway musicals. After football season, during which emphasis was on marches and marching routines, the band turned to more serious music in preparation for the annual Christmas and spring concerts. TOP: Look-alikes. M!' mi «i inia i iw Relating the past to the present and tne present to the future was the aim of the history depanment. Civic students learned the duties, rights, and privileges of all American citizens. A basic understanding of laws in a democracy was also stressed. In world history, students studied the general history of most major countries. From prehestoric times to the dawning of civilization, to the early modem age to the space age, students charted the development of mankind. Students in American history studied the factors that shaped our nation. Studies ranged from the 1400’s to 1973 with an emphasis on the people who played a part in tne founding and guiding of America. American government students found themselves involved in the basic functions of the government branches. They studied the constitution in depth to obtain a clear understanding of the government on state, local, and federal levels. Psychology and sociology students studied and explored human characteristics found in everyday life. THINK SUC f' A- 29 Math Department Stresses Exactness Courses offered in the math department were General Math I and II, Algebra I and II, geometry, and advanced algebra. Typing, bookkeeping, shorthand, and secretarial practice classes helped students prepare for their futures. For those going into the business world immediately following high school graduation, these courses provided a chance for some much-needed practice. For the student going to college, they were just as important. Business skills proved invaluable in taking notes and preparing written material, both of which are vital for success in college. 31 Home Ec, Agri Provide Practical Experience Agri I began with F.F.A. orientation, the basics of plant and animal sciences and machine safety procedures. Students then progressed to the basic techniques of arc and oxygen acetylene welding and the operation of various saws. Projects of the students' choice illustrated their capability. Toward the end of the year automotive mechanics and small engine repair were introduced. Agri II and III allowed students to apply their skills in making such projects as gun racks, cabinets and barbeque pits and prepare for district contests. For the first time in our school, semester courses in the Home Ec Department were offered to young men - adult living, interior decorating, nutrition, and human growth and development. For girls only, courses covered five areas: clothing and textiles, foods and nutrition, family relations and management, housing, and consumer education. TOP: C. Smith and S. Whether dissecting frogs in biology class or collecting oxygen in chemistry, science students of BHS had opportunities to practice theories they learned earlier. All freshmen students were enrolled in general science, taught by Mrs. Copper and Mr. Massey. The course was a con- ■ tinuation of grade school and junior high instruction in science in all its phases with increased emphasis on plant and animal life, the division of cells, and the structure. Sophomores in Mr. Jones’ and Mr. Massey's biology classes studied different species of life and learned to identify the essential body organs of animals. After learning how to balance equations, chemistry students experimented with solutions, metals, and acids of all types. Students in physical science worked with problems concerning weights and measures. Grammar received the most emphasis with ninth grade students. Sophomore students began a general study of all types of literature to develop literary appreciation. Juniors dealt with a more specific study of American literature. The literary interest in the senior year shifted to English works. Also, seniors prepared for college by writing in class every day, with a composition due every week and a research paper on an English author as a culmination of their previous studies in composition, due during the last semester. Students with deficient reading ability took advantage of special classes under a reading teacher. Others improved their understanding of English grammar in remedial classes. Speech students enjoyed a different type of classroom activity in that they performed as individuals. Each student was required to give a speech each week after he had learned the basic principles of each type. Skits and plays formed a basis for group activity. TOP: Books, the basis for learning English. ABOVE: Doug Walker, Charles Ragsdale, David Evans, Mike Duke, and Andy Bethell depict surrender of the South in speech class play. Fargo a part of the Brinkley Public School System, was open to students in me eleventh and twelfth grade but an orientation course was allowed in the tenth. Courses were offered in automobile mechanics, welding, sheet metal, building technology, and health occupations. Students gained extensive knowledge of automobile mechanics. Building technology took on a project once a ween and each student served as foreman, thus gaining organizational experience. Welding was learned by arc and gas welding techniques. Students constructed welding booths, tables, carts, and accessories for their shop. Girls studied the basics for all health-related fields in preparation for becoming nurses, x-ray technicians, and doctor assistants. 38 Practical Experience And Training OPPOSITE PAGE, TOP: D. They called on businesses and friends for ads; total sales amounted to $1758.50. From August 10 to 14, four members of the staff and Mrs. Sims attended a yearbook workshop at Ouachita Baptist, where they listened to experts explain correct yearbook editing. They gathered new ideas for pictures, layouts, themes, and organization. They selected a theme, a method, a style and worked up a partial dummy . For excellence in this endeavor they won a first place trophy in competition with some 40 other Arkansas schools. Picture taking began on the very first day of school. The staff met during the fourth period each day to crop pictures, draw up pages, write copy, and attend to all the endless details of editing a quality yearbook. Nerves became frayed and tempers often flared as work proceeded. Little had new staff members realized the amount of work involved. February 18 was a red-letter day - final copy was on its way! This day was surpassed only by the day the yearbooks arrived. The staff, first to view the book, experienced the joy of seeing their work in print and pride in their accomplishment. City Joins Band Halloween spirit was captured in the annual Halloween carnival, made possible by many interested parents and other civic mindea citizens. Our gym was alive with laughter and excitement as students and adults alike bobbed for apples and tried their luck on the cake walk and tests of skill. The colorful booths were sponsored by various clubs, organizations, and groups of parents. Mr. Bar's bandroom was the setting for a mid-sixties night club called the Yellow Submarine. Guests sat and ate by candlelight while listening to live music. Climax of the night came with the announcement that Janice Boyle and Dwain Melvin of the junior class had made the most money and so were declared Halloween king and queen. Other candidates were Harrison Armstrong and Janet McCloud, freshman class, Fred Sands and Edith Frein, sophomore class, and Mike Freeman and Marcia McBride, senioi class. $894.00 was the winning amount with $6,165.43 as total. 54 In Annual Fund-Raising Project OPPOSITE PAGE TOP: Jane Warblow sings as Bobby Poland, Annette Nickle-son, Charles Ragsdale, Lloyd Ramsey, Danny Luck, Gretchen Word play accompaniment. The spirit of the ball players and the enthusiasm of the student body motivated the Tigers to a very successful season. The first game of the season seemed to prove fatal for the Marion Patriots, as the Tigers put seven Patriot players out of the game as mutilated them 41-8. Then a 39-7 victory over Des Arc shattered the old rivalry of this always being a close game. The Tigers were stung by the Wynne Yellowjackets, which proved to be a motivation game, and the next week came back to break a 26-year reign to beat the Stuttgart Ricebirds 29-27 in a last-minute drive. The Tigers out-lasted their next foes in a cold, wet and windy battle against Oak Grove. DeWitt, which was to be one of our more worthy opponents, proved themselves not so worthy as the Tigers blasted them 26-8. District 6-A Champs, Clarendon, tried desperately in a tense rivalry game, but were not able to produce a satisfying score. Add liberal amounts of willingness to work, desire to excel, and determination to boost school spirit. Sprinkle in bits of attractiveness, grace, and poise. Fold in generous amounts of friendliness and unselfishness. Add a dash of humor. Mix all ingredients and pour into a black and gold uniform. The above recipe is one used to create a Brinkley High School cheerleader, a delight to all who support the activities of Brinkley High School. It is at its best on crisp, cool days in the fall and winter. (Note: Ingredients may be altered slightly at the discretion of the sponsor.) Cheerleaders, fifteen strong, the largest squad Brinkley has ever had, began practice early in the summer months. Practice continued into the fall through football and basketball seasons. Leading the student body during pep rallies, making signs for the halls and working at the concession stand during track season kept the cheerleaders busy throughout the school year. 80 Boost School Spirit And Team Morale V OPPOSITE PAGE, TOP: Cheerleader captain, 1972-73, Sissy Geisler. The excitement began with the announcement of the football royalty on October 6. Days of planning . . . phone orders for paper, chicken wire, nails . . . trips to lumber companies, to supply houses . . . nights of frantic building, hammering, stuffing chicken wire, cutting streamers as each float was made ready for the parade. In an afternoon assembly on Homecoming day the student body and guests assembled in the auditorium, which had been transformed into a place of beauty with black and gold streamers and gold mums. The maids proceeded down the aisle on the arms of their escort as everyone breathlessly awaited the announcement of the queen. Coach Hattabaugh walked onto the stage and placed the crown on the head of Susan Word. The colorful parade lined up in front of the school and, led by the marching band, proceeded down Lynn Street to the park, where a spirited pep rally was held. Friday the 13th held no jinx for us, for the mighty Tigers proved the fallacy of the ancient superstition by downing the Joe T. Robinson Senators 41 to 12 . . .a happy ending for Homecoming '72. We look back on the spirited rush of fall, the burst of color, the riotous enthusiasm at pep meetings and football games; we remember the dreary drudgery of the winter months, the drabness of nature; we reflect on the bright expectancy of spring, the warm days that brought forth fresh greenness, until at last the LEAVES came into their full growth - graduation for some, for all the end of another school year. Always there was a change, a maturing, a reaching out. We, the Tiger staff of '73, wish to give special tribute and a hearty thank you ! To our subscribers and our friends in down-town Brinkley for their financial support. To Mr. Palmer Bryan for our specially designed cover. To Mr. Billy Clay for excellent photography. To Mr. Willhite, Mr. Randolph, and our teachers, for much patience. Autographs ga.iiN ir; mm • •• ••• 9rff • 33S,.. — rril . • m . i : 1 ,;L_______________1!.---------- - -.
