Ironically, these same men would have been on their way home if their replacements hadn’t been sent to Grenada. Among the victims was an American congressman. The airliner apparently strayed into Soviet air space on a routine flight to Seoul, South Korea. Soviet soldiers tracked the plane but failed to make contact with the Korean's warning them of their violation. Rescue attempts by the U.S., Japan, and Korea were inhibited by Soviet vessels guarding the area. Saukalin Island is certainly “on the map” in the memories of the victims’ families. One last item might not be “news” but the winter of 1983 had to be one of the coldest winters on record. Blisteringly cold temperatures kept Americans from coast to coast huddling for warmth and stretching their budgets to the break-• DOjnt with heating bills.
