Ida Scott Taylor All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players; they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his tunes plays many parts. As You Like It II, Vii, 139 So we the students of Brimfield High have parts to play in this year’s production — “Brimfield High School, 1982. This yearbook draws parallels between all aspects of theater and our school life. Hopefully, you will be able to see the comparisons without too much trouble. If as the poet says, All the world’s a stage” then may the scenes we play here be the best they can be — “be worth remembering.” Students who posed for our cover and who are among the stars of “Brimfield High School — 1982” were: Mike Martin, Michelle Marvin, Annette Paternoga, Jim Satterfield, Anu Sauso, Bill Thompson, Penny Wendorff, Craig Ryan, Diane Harmon, Sue Thompson, 2 Colleen Rozene, Julie Goulden, Josefina Mendez, Johanna Etsare, Janet McKown, David Harmon, Sean Wells, and Scott Blankenship, Directors School Board Every theatrical production needs money to function. The people who are responsible for getting it and managing it are the producers. Brimfield School District 309 has its producers too. They are collectively known as our School Board. These dedicated people (and parents) must deal continually with all manner of problems that affect the operations of our school. This all takes many hours and much effort to make a school year a “hit.” This year’s Board consisted of: Roger Sandall, Kenneth Johnson, James Ryan, Ralph Peters, Kathy Sherman, Michael Kuhns, and Peggy Powers. 4 — Directors AA ! i E Superintendent and Principals A production such as our school year always has its special technical advisors as well as its producers. Among our advisors is Supertinendent Donald Robinson (A). Mr. Robinson is finishing his third year with us before moving on to a new position on the county level. We at B.H.S. wish him and his family well. Our other special advisors are principals James Griner (C) and Donald Mathews (B). These two men are responsible for the smooth operations of the grade and high schools respectively. They provide the leadership so necessary to good school programs and operations — even when it gets frustrating and time consuming. Directors — 5 The teachers of Brim-field High School have completed another year of directing.” Teachers are much like directors of plays or films. They guide students to learn their parts in life. Unlike the directors, teachers are the foundation of a never ending script — the script of life. Educational directors, however, are not content to sit behind the camera. They are always part of the scene. William Cinnamon Vocational Agriculture Lola Greenbaum English District Terri Broms P.E. Charles Sauerwein Biology Drivers Ed. Peggy Schnarr Spanish Radine Kellogg Science Lorraine Roliardi The directors of this large production had many unforeseen problems to deal with this school year. The Farm Progress Show and long weekends created by Mother Nature wreaked havoc with scheduling, but most of the problems were ironed out in the following weeks. There were, inevitably, problems of all sorts but like all directors say, ‘‘The show must go _ __ ii on. These directors work half way between Broadway of the East coast and Hollywood of the West. They enjoy the “melting pot” of the Midwest or the mixture of all types of people. This mixture produces excellent opportunities for both students and teachers to learn. Teachers in this “melting pot” become teachers because they are interested in helping students learn while enjoying the show.” The guidance of young adults is an exciting and often rewarding experience for those teachers who are true professionals and want to be teachers. Teaching may not be the most lucrative profession in the world, nor does it offer the best hours, but it is by far one of the most important and potentially rewarding. Directors — 7 The directors of Brim-field scenes” were not working for an Emmy or any Academy Award. The only reward these directors will want to receive is the actors’ cooperation. With this, the directors can help the actors develop their characters to their full potential. There are a multitude of teaching styles just as there are a multitude of actors and scenes to be directed. Some of these “directors” may disagree on how each scene should be handled, but they all agree that each scene is important and unique. Perhaps this is why there is more than one director.” As these students grow in their parts they will realize how important the director’s advice can be. The director will also see how important he can be. Neither the student or the teacher will ever stop learning — or changing. Just as directors sometimes change, so do faculty personnel. This year Kathy Burcham (a new teacher) had to leave mid-year when her husband changed jobs. She was replaced by Cindy Staley. Many do not realize what the job of being an aide entails. A teacher aide is an extension of the classroom teacher in that he or she offers additional personal attention to the students. Many aides also help with the paperwork so that the teacher can concentrate on teaching. We would also like to mention Genie Potosky for her service. She moved to Monterrey, Mexico, in the middle of the year. Joanne Foster was also a teacher aide. Both we and the teachers of Brimfield Schools extend our thanks! Directors — 51 Student Teachers The Brimfield Schools had seven student teachers for the 1981-82 school year. They came to Brimfield to try out their teaching skills so that they may continue in improving the quality of the teaching profession. Perhaps the best way to sum up any student teacher’s first few days at the craft is with the phrase “There’s never a dull moment!’’ We all hope that the student teachers enjoyed their stay and learned as much from us as we learned from them! Act III — 121 Erimfield Grade School Track Teams The Brimfield Grade School track season got off to a “cold” start by being snowed out several times! But, once the weather finally cooperated, they traveled to Princeville (twice), to the county meet in Peoria Heights, to Kelley Avenue, and to the conference meet at Dunlap. Many ribbons were received at the county and conference competitions. The team had a good season overall and was strongly represented in all meets, especially by the boys’ heavyweights who were second overall in the conference. Joe Spies set two conference records: the long jump and the hurdles. Derek Gravitt set the conference record in the two meter dash. Way to go! Pictured here are some of the team members: (A) Coach Hart, Scott Blankenship, Ronnie Groeper, and Rick Miller. Rick Miller shows off his running talent (B), while Ronnie Groeper and Scott Blankenship demonstrate their relay ability (C). BA Act III — 123 Scftball Spring brings many new activities, softball being one of them. The team, uncertain at first, blossomed with experience. The members of the soft-ball team were: Sharon Humphrey, Jane Wendorff, Tina Maher, Kelli Weida, Kristel Weida, Barb Wagoner, Mr. Camp (coach), Jill Devore, Sue Thompson, Cindy Porter, Allison Silman, Pam Hulen, Debbie Compton, and Angie Edwards. 124 — Act III Baseball “One, two, three strikes you’re out at the old ball game,” that’s what you are up against when you play baseball. Through rain, wind, and blistering heat our team of devoted players pulled through these conditions and had some very notable victories. These Indians on the field are Wen-dall Carter, Scott Whittaker, Mark McCoy, Chris Ryan, Ken Harding, Clint Bot-tenberg, Kevin Krieter, Tim Kellstadt, Mike Kuhns, Kurt Sollenberger, and Joe Kelch (A). By watching (B), hitting (C), throwing (D), running (E), standing (F), and catching (G) the players proved their abilities. Act III — 125 Sports Candids On Tuesday, June 6th, the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade choruses performed a musical called, ‘‘How the West Was Won.” Joellyn Johnson (A), Mike Truitt (B), Mark Smith (C), Tina Peters, Heather Kuhns, Cathy Mueller (D), Keith Bonds (F), and a fast moving group of kids (E) entertained the audience. How the West Was Wen Act III — 127 128 — Act III Spring Music Arts festival One of this year’s most spectacular events was our district’s Spring Music and Arts Festival held on May 25th. The instrumental music department combined efforts with the high school art department to provide a full evening of entertainment. Some of the selections performed by our talented musicians included: the theme from “Chariots of Fire,” “Birdland,” and the theme from “Hill Street Blues.” A special feature of the concert was the performance by the high school’s Jazz Band. They dazzled the audience with pieces like “Watermelon Man” and the theme from Patton.” Before and after the concert, the audience was able to view art designs, paintings, posters, and pottery made by the high school art students. This show left no doubts as to the tremendous ability and potential of our artists, be they musical or artistic. Compliments go to the faculty members responsible for this festival, Mrs. Bernadine Tucker (Art) and Mr. Karl Kasjens (Music). Without their efforts and diligence there might not be a Music and Arts Festival. Spring Spirit Week Some people who participated and helped plan the spirit week were: (A) Bobbi Harper, Karen Miller, Sherri Molohon, Jennifer Dunne, Wendell Carter, Regina Streitmatter, Terri Hulen, Holly Furlong, Steve Wiseman, Pat Middleton, Annette Patternoga, Tina Jones, Bill Thompson, Julie Goulden, Beth Heinz, Cindy Sauerwein, and Ken Harding. Some activities were: Gondola Day, Ice Cream Social, and Student Leadership Day. 130 — Act III Diane Harmon Wins DAD This year’s winner of the DAR Good Citizenship Award was Diane Marie Harmon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Harmon of Brimfield. The DAR award is based on four criteria: leadership, patriotism, dependability, and service. Diane has demonstrated ability in all of these categories. Her accomplishments include being a member of the cheerleading squad and pep club for four years. She was also in the National Honor Society for two years and was named an Illinois State Scholar. She is also listed in the Society of Distinguished American High School Students and Who’s Who Among American High School Students. Diane was an active member of student government throughout her high school years, including senior Class President. After graduating, she plans to attend the University of Illinois and major in accounting. 132 — Cast Top Ten Seniors Diane Harmon Julie Wyman 10.857 10.447 Chris Ryan Kurt Sollenberger Ron Groeper Dave Harmon 10.229 10.170 10.061 10.000 Clint Bottenberg Larry Mills Tina Maher Barb Stokoe 9.889 9.500 9.412 9.394 Finale — 133 1981-82 Spcrts Awards On Thursday, May 27th, the Booster Club sponsored the annual Sports Banquet. All general awards for athletics were handed out. Sue Thompson (D), Scott Whittaker (A), and Lester Collins (E), are shown accepting their awards. Janet McKown and Chris Ryan (B) received the Sportsmanship Awards which are voted on by members of the opposing basketball teams. Earl Foster (C), who was the speaker for the evening, was given an award in honor of his many years at Brimfield. BA CA 134 — Finale Extra-curricular Activities For extracurricular activities, David Neys races motorcycles. He has participated in the hare scrambler races. He has raced in fifteen races and has received two first place trophies and one fifth place trophy. He moved up from “B” class to the “A” class. His bike is a Yamaha YZ125. Joe Heubi has been very busy with a different kind of extracurricular activity — rodeos. He rides bulls, ropes calves, and rides broncos. Every year he takes home several prizes — like his latest belt buckle — for calf roping. Joe won second place in the district. He is so dedicated to his “hobby” he had to leave right after graduation to drive to another rodeo out of state. These two young men are just a few of the many young people in our area that participate in sports outside the ordinary school schedule. Their efforts should be acknowledged and their achievements are certainly worth recognition. We congratulate David and Joe on what they have accomplished and wish them well in future events. Finale — 135 Prcm 1982 The Lena May 14, 1982, marked the date that the junior class held the prom for the senior class. Prom was held at the Continental Regency Hotel. Ronnie Groeper and his date Danielle Forney (A) show off their elegant attire. The theme, “The Long and Winding Road,” was inscribed on the prom glasses. Each prom attendant received a long stemmed prom glass (B) to remember the night. “Trouper” was the name of the band (C) and they played a various selection of popular music. Shown here (D) are some of the prom-goers enjoying the music of Trouper.” To top off the evening was the crowning of the prom court. Barb Stokoe and Charlotte Whitmore (E) were crowned Prom Princesses. The Prom Queen was Diane Harmon (F), crowned by Junior Class President Melody Carter. Jesse Jones was the King, and he and Diane Harmon, the royal couple (G) are shown together here. 136 — Finale and Winding Read.” Finale — 137 As the opening chords sounded, Marshals Mark Richmond and Whitney Wineland (A) led the Grade School Class of 1982 to their graduation — after nine hard years of work. Before the ceremony began, however, everyone received carnations like Christie Cahill (B) and Brian Whitmer (C) did. The girls weren’t the only snappily dressed (or nervous) participants, as these debonair young men (D) illustrate. (They are Kurt Peters, Luke Baptiste, and Dale Doering). When the music did begin, the graduates came down the aisle (E, F, G). Then, class president John Baysinger (I) welcomed the audience that came to proudly watch their young people graduate. Lori Seamons (E) and Jason Duckett gave short speeches that cheered and relaxed everyone (including Cathy Mueller — H). Then came the Big Moment when the class of ’82 received their diplomas from school board member Mike Kuhns shown here with Kim Weida (J) and Jamie Archibald (K). Then it was all over. Everyone just a little bit sad ... and a whole lot glad. Finale — 139 Graduation ’82: An End and The fifty-eight graduates of Brimfield High School finalized their formal schooling on June 4, 1982, a night that will never be forgotten in their lives. Nerves were on edge and it showed in every senior’s face and actions. Clint Bottenberg (A) is assisted by Mr. Jessen in pinning on his flower. Father Brennan (B) gave the Invocation to wish the Class of '82 “Good Luck.” Nine seniors (C) expressed their feelings to their class and friends in one last song. Julie Wyman (D) and Chris Ryan (E) were co-salutatorians and Diane Harmon (F) was the 1982 valedictorian. In their addresses to their class they reviewed their years of school and looked ahead to a brilliant future. AA BA 140 — Finale a Beginning The accomplishments of this outstanding class were marked by the awards presented. Here Kurt Sollenberger and Clint Bottenberg (G) jointly receive the Tom Harmon Memorial Scholarship Award. Ronnie Groeper (H) is shown receiving the long awaited diploma from Board President Ken Johnson. The Brimfield Bank Scholarship was awarded to Brad Kristensen by Ray Eckhoff (I). David Harmon was the first person from Brimfield accepted to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Colonel Robert L. Pinkerton was present to award David his nomination (J). Finally, after four long years, the tassels are turned (K) signaling the end and the beginning of a new life. Marshals Melody Carter and Mark Krusa (L) led the graduated class out of the gym and into the world to start anew.
