Why? Because of human nature. Man was made to fear anything that isn't put in front of him on a silver platter. And although we don't have any crystal balls or silver platters, we can help you look forward to your tomorrows by helping you relive the best times of your todays. Chances are that five, ten, or even twenty years from now, when you look into this book, you, as well as all the rest of us, will find yourself silently laughing inside over some of those wild or crazy fears you had about your future. TODAY NGS !■ You’re in My Heart Homecoming was held this year on February 4, in, of course, our own high school gym. Red, white, and coordinating pink streamers were decoratively used, with hearts and cupids as accents. The band was ’ White Wing,” an excellent choice by the student council, who sponsors the homecoming dances. For the underclassmen it was a great start ; towards future homecomings; for the seniors, a memorable experience as their last. Attending BHS for the whole school year, Riitta participated in a variety of activities: Girls Junior Varsity alternate (basketball). National Honor Society, Homecoming queen attendant, and she achieved grades that earned her honorary salutatorian class standing. Her hosts were the Jim Wyman family. Mirrian who resided with the Waldo Hughart family, came to us at semester. Her interests are in music. She enjoys playing the piano, dancing; and like most Americans, she likes listening to records. We hope they have enjoyed their stay as much as we have enjoyed having them. Craig Tuttle Wins DAR Good-Citizenship Award This year's winner of the DAR-Good Citizenship award was Craig Tuttle, son of Mrs. Ellie Tuttle of Brimfield. Craig has been a member of the student council, Spanish club, pep club, and the athletic club. He served as class president his |unior and senior years and was a member of the “starting five for varsity basketball all four of his high school years. He also was a member of the yearbook staff his junior and senior years. Craig's accomplishments have shown him to be a worthy recipient of this award. 13 The most important part of Brimf ield High School is the people, not |ust the participants in special activities, but the people involved in everyday situations. These are the times of our high school years we will remember the most; sitting in class and in the study hall, and those unforgettable PE classes. u Fall Concert opens Music Department’s performing season. The Sr and Jr. High Choruses, as well as the H S. Jr High, and beginning bands played very well at the fall concert this year. The program, under the direc tion of Miss Marty Mowder, band instructor, Mrs. Debbie Austin, choral instructor, and accompanied by Mrs. Ann Bottenberg was enjoyed by many (6) (8). The Jr. High choir grows in size and sound every year (5). Although the H.S. band is small, the quality of the group makes up for the lack of instrumentation (1). The Sr. High choir, performing such songs as The Water Is Wide” and Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen couldn't have been better (2). Wendall Carter has his hands full as the beginning band plays, and Chuck Wiseman looks as if he is a little tired of the whole thing (3), (4). This year’s Christmas program was one of the most enjoyable and surprising performances put on by the music department in a long time. The program, in the capable hands of Mrs. Debbie Austin, Miss Marty Mowder, and accompanist Mrs. Ann Bottenberg, delighted a capacity crowd (2), (3). The Sr. High choir sang angelically(4). Rudolph's helpers sang a tribute to that famous reindeer (second grade) (6). The program was highlighted by Janice and Becky Hughart's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring piano duet (5). Santa Claus, wrapped as a huge present, arrived to top off the evening (1). Santa's no. 1 reindeer. 5 What a pair! As couples grouped together at tables they enjoyed an excellent meal. After dessert, everyone flocked to get their couple pictures taken — plus some interesting group-shots (3). Then the dancing started, music being provided by “Night Flight” (4). When crowning time rolled around, Angie Stenger, Tylyn Tuttle, and Cindy Humphrey were chosen as the three queen runners-up. The queen was Bev Hibbert, seen being crowned by the king, Mike Wildman (5). After they shared a dance (1), the prom continued until midnight, when all the couples went their own ways for more of the magic of prom night. THE WAY I FEEL TONIGHT 19 ETICS 21 Girls 1978 Varsity Basketball Coach Terry Hart's main goal for this year's Girls Varsity team was to better last year's record. The goal was not accomplished, but the play was just as good. The girls worked hard throughout the season as well as during the summer. Their goal was just a little out of reach. The highlight of the season was the Forman Tournament where Brimfield captured third place with an upset win over Delevan. A few of the girls who put in some long hours were Joyce Harmon (2), Mary Jo Short (5), Mary Ann Cinnamon (3), Brenda Peters (6), and Pam Edwards (4). The team worked hard this year, but lost in the first round of the Regionals in a very close game against Farmington. Perhaps with more experience the team will have a better season. This year's was a young team, starting a senior, two juniors, and two sophomores. The starters were given support from the rest of the team. Team members for the 1977-78 season were (1) left to right Mary Jo Short, Joyce Harmon, Amy Powers, Pam Edwards, Brenda Peters, Sue Bledsoe, bottom row Mary Ann Cinnamon, Mary Mathews, Denise Scovil, and Shelley Humphrey. 2 22 i nr ie i-O, [8R'WFItL1 BRHlFIEUO BRIWFltlDABimiFIEl.oA BR, r,!L0 A 13 J S? • 2 y CLaoi Oj R F tu 12 Hart Coaches Two Teams Practicing, working together, and getting along were high priorities for the girl's basketball teams. “I didn't have any problems with them at all, said Coach Hart, “They were just great. Probably they will get even greater. With an abundance of underclassmen, these teams show great potential for improvement within the next few years. Coach Hart gives encouraging words, but Pam Edwards looks more thirsty than tired (1). Joyce (2) attempts to capture a basket while Pam Edwards attempts to block an unfriendly effort (3). Girls Junior Varsity . . . They Tried, but Just Couldn’t Do It. The J.V. players put out their best concentrated effort this season but just couldn't get control, ending with a record of 0 10. Mary Mathews and Amy Powers showed themselves to be amongst the best scorers on the team (4), and starting senior Denise Scovil shows how to handle the ball. (6) Natalie Furlong, one of the most improved this year, finds the ball while team members Denise Scovil and Amy Powers watch. (7) Members of the team (5) were: top right, to bottom left Riitta Alavuotunki, Denise Scovil, Sheila Blankenship, Amy Powers, Natalie Furlong, Chris Hacker, and Mary Mathews. 25 2 Brimfield Varsity Posts Best Record Brimfield's 1977 78 Boy’s Varsity Basketball team holds the best record in the history of the school with a tally of 27 1. The Indians were recognized in the polls as the 7th best team in the state. The team consisted of kneeling: Craig Tuttle, Rod McKown, Joe Hanks, Buddy Koep pel, Tim Dunne, Dick Lane; standing: Mike Cinnamon, Ed Mathews, Marty Johnson, Greg Nevells, Jace Jessen, and Jim Coe, manager (1). Some keys to the Indians' success were concentration as Craig Tuttle displays (2) and team work (3). 28 in School’s History . . .27-1 This year's varsity team won the Regional Tournament, another first for the 77-78 Indians. Greg Nevells showed a little inside work at the sectionals in ROVA(1), while the team prayed Greg would make it (6). A lot of support was given to the Indians this year especially at the sectionals (5) and Jeff Nevells jumps high for an easy lay-up (7). 29 BRIMFIELD WINS FIRST REGIONAL TITLE This year's ICAC Conference champs were led by 6 3 Junior Greg Nevells (1); 5 10 Sophomore Joe Hanks (2); 6 4 Senior Jeff Nevells (3); 6 2 Junior Ed Mathews (4); and 5 11 Senior Craig Tuttle (5). The Indians were supported by a fine bench. Tuttle, Jeff Nevells, Greg Nevells, and Ed Mathews were voted All-Conference. One of the high points of this year's season was the victory at the Regionals, and the celebra tion that followed (6). Greg Nevells helps contribute to that victory with a couple of free throws (7). Congratulations Indi ans on the best basketball sea son ever! 7 31 Junior Varsity Brimfield's Junior Varsity basketball team may have been disappointed with their record, but they played some fine basketball during the season. Most of their losses were by very small margins. The boys who hustled and gave their best every game were: kneeling Scott Whitmer, Tim Claybaugh, Jeff Maher, Steve Mack, Jim Wagner, and Brian Porter, manager. Standing Coach Pryor, Steve Weller, Brad Hib-bert, Rick Wells, Paul Antonacci, Buddy Koeppel, and Eric Sollenberger (1). Shows Potential With a small and young team (all freshmen and sophomores) mis takes are often expected, but many mistakes were made by the other teams too. Brimfield’s JV's spent plenty of time at the free throw line as Tim Claybaugh (2) and Steve Mack (3) demonstrate. Buddy Koeppel makes a fine leap to block a pass as Steve and Brad await their chances to grab the ball. 33 Cheerleaders Promote Spirit • • • Pom Pom Girls Add Excitement Crowds were large, spirits were high, enthusiasm was its best and so were our varsity cheerleaders. These girls deserve the respect of everyone in the community for their efforts in cheering our team to twenty seven victories. Girls on the squad were, clockwise: Kathy Koeppel. Paula Staley. Kim Claybaugh, Joyce Harmon. Kay Sauerwem. Brad placed in the top ten at the district cross country meet, qualifying him for the state meet. At State Brad finished 42nd This year's cross country team was (1) bottom row Todd Pryor, mascot, Steve Mack, Doug Goulden, Jim Wagner, Tim Claybaugh, assistant coach Scott Durham; standing Coach Pryor, Brad Harding, Eric Sollenber ger, David Minor, and assistant coach Jim Carlson. In photo 2 Doug Goulden and Brad Hibbert stretch out to keep their pace; Doug uses his last bit of energy to finish the race (3). 36 It takes practice to be good. It was a common sight this year to see a Brimfield cross country runner out in the roads jogging. The jogging paid off too. The team finished second in the conference to the state champions, and this with the majority of the team being freshmen. Coach Carlson is shown here (6) pointing out some of the finer points of running. Pain is present, but do we quit? Never! Because the team did not quit, real pain was sometimes the result. Tim Claybaugh (5) and Brad Hibbert (4) show the effects of a hard run. The cross country team did very well this year. Other teams know to look out for Brimfield in the future. We should be hearing some excellent reports about our runners in the fall! 37 X The 1978 Team: kneeling: Earl Horton, 220 yd. dash and 100 yd. dash; Rod McKown, 880 yd. dash and mile relay; Joe Hanks, mile relay and mile run; Tim Claybaugh, 2 mile relay and 880 yd. dash; Don Stokoe, 120 H H. and 2 mile relay standing: Dick Lane, 220 yd. dash and 440 relay; Ed Mathews, long jump, 330 low hurdles; Greg Nevels, shot put and discus; Brad Harding, 440 yd. dash and mile relay; Brad Hibbert, mile run and 2 mile relay; Doug Goulden, 2 mile run and 2 mile relay Not pictured: Jim Wagner, 2 mile run. BHS Has Record Smashing Track Team There is no reason to be ashamed of this year’s track team. Outstanding individual performances high lighted the 1978 season. Under the direction of coach Terry Hart six school records were broken through the year. With only one senior, the '78 track team captured third place in the ICAC track meet and scored well in all other track meets, including the district. At the district meet, Eddie Mathews qualified to represent Brim-field in the IHSA State track meet by winning the long jump. Many hours of running and jumping went into the season and they weren't wasted. The team will return with everyone except senior Brad Harding. Coach Hart can’t wait until next year! 39 Bad Luck Plagues Varsity Baseball Rich Coyle, 2nd base Phil Maher, catcher Wayne Fowler, 1 st base Mr. Sullivan’s first year as head baseball coach could be considered a disappointing one. The Indians fin ished with a 2-14 record, winning their only games against Yates City and Peoria Heights. Win or lose, the team was always pushing their opponents to close games. The '78 baseball team was directed by seniors Wayne Fowler, Rich Coyle, Phil Maher, and Brad Harding. Ed Mathews led the team in hitting while Wayne Fowler captured the most runs batted in. Freshman Eric Sollenberger had one of the two wins as a pitcher for the Indians. Coach Sullivan is looking forward to a better season in the upcoming year. kneeling: Tim Claybaugh, Brian Porter, Rod McKown, Rich Coyle, Don Carmody, Joe Hanks, standing: Mr. Sullivan, Eric Sollenberger, Phil Maher, Brad Harding, Wayne Fowler, Vance Weisbruch, Marty Johnson. The girls played seven games, winning three. (Sometimes it was hard telling whether they were a softball team or a cheering section!) Many of this year’s games were canceled because of rain, but when the sun was shining so were the girls. Mary Ann Cinnamon(2) looks out to see how her team was keeping up while Cindy Scovil and Amy Powers (3) wait for their turns to bat. (3) As Marg Eberle, a former member, can tell you, it was also a sloppy job fixing them. The club charges 350 for one, and it was well worth it! Music Department Has New Leadership The H.S. band and chorus have been very active this year under the talented leadership of Mrs. Debbie Austin and Miss Marty Mowder. This year's performing season started with the fall concert in October. Five members of the band and four members of the chorus attended the IMEA District Festival on Nov. 5. Becky Hughart’s excellent audition enabled her to attend the State and National Festivals held in Chicago. Next on the agenda was the Christmas Concert on December 19. On Feb. 5 and 6, five members of the band participated in the Augustana Band Festival in Rock Island. The next big event occurred at Lewistown on March 4. First place ratings were given to Diane Minor, Marilyn Colgan, Jill Hassel bacher, Becky Hughart, Joy Hasselbacher, Janice Hughart, Brad Harding, Jim Coe, and Tim Claybaugh. The pictures were in the hands of Melody Cook (6) and her crew of Diane Carroll and Ed Mathews (7). Janice Hughart (9) had the job of copy editor. She had to insure correct writing. A major responsibility fell on Marilyn Colgan's shoulders as the business manager (8). She had to handle every thing that related to the sale and financing of the book. This doesn't mean Jill Hasselbacher, Craig Tuttle, (10) and Mike Wildman (11) didn't have any work to do. They, along with all the rest, helped design, write, and prepare the contents of this special publication just for you. We hope you enjoy it today and 52 H.S. On June 2, 1978, sixty former high school seniors switched their tassels from the right side to the left. With that simple motion, clutching their diplomas tightly, sixty adults walked out of the gymnasium into new lives. Some faced college, some jobs, and some marriage, but all were able to leave well prepared, thanks to Brim-field High School and District 309. Class of 78 — CONGRATULATIONS! With Pride — Graduates of ’78 Salutatorian Cindy Humphrey gives a fine speech at the graduation ceremony (1). The foreign exchange students participating in the ceremony were Riitta Alavuotunki (7) and Mirian da Silva (6). For the most part, they found the switch from “Big Eight Grader” to Punky Freshmen” to be rather nerve-wracking. Once the change had been adjusted to, however, the class elected Tim Claybaugh president, Natalie Furlong vice president, Amy Powers treasurer, and Cindy Stenger secretary (1). Studying took on new meaning for some freshmen. Doug Goulden (2) was captured on film concentrating on homework during study hall. . . but he didn't study all the time. During cross country season Doug missed Sectional qualification by one place; he was 36th out of 75 runners. Not bad for one of our many talented freshmen! Slave Day during Spirit Week proved to be one of the more traumatic times for all freshmen. They were sold to upperclassmen for 500. Once bought each freshman was at the mercy of his or her owner the whole day. Carrying books, polishing boots, holding teddy bears, wearing diapers, and leashes, cleaning lockers, and many other more embarrassing things were their lot. Congratulations to the survivors! Next year you get your chance to wield the power! Mark Wright also hams it up while at his locker (7). Steve Mack takes a bit of harassment from some upperclassmen (9). 75 Sophomores Class of 1980 AND NOW WE ARE SOPHOMORES! Selling candy person-to person brought in some revenue; selling popcorn at all the home basketball games brought in a few more dollars. The object of a 1 1 these activities was the Jr. Sr. Prom, THE dance of the year for most upperclassmen. To help promote the event, a Prom Style Show (courtesy of Country Casual and Seno Formal Wear) was held in March. Fancy dresses and sharp-looking tuxedos were modeled by BHS's own Dave Carlson, Marty Johnson, Ed Mathews, Greg Nevells, Marvin Herrmann, Vance Weisbruch, Dick Lane, Tim Dunne, Michelle Horn, Kari Jones, Pam Stenger, Kim Claybaugh, Joyce Harmon, Kathy Koeppel, Marlise Streit-matter, and Cathy Arnold. Another major event of the year that involved juniors was Spirit Week. Juniors really dressed their parts on Grub Day Cathy Arnold (4) and Little Boy, Little Girl Day Janet Hopkins (2). (For more pictures, see pages 10 and 11.) Leading the class to a super year were officers Dave Carlson (Pres.), Dick Lane (V. Pres.), Mary Jo Short (Sec.), and Joyce Harmon (Treas.)(1). Some faculty members had responsibilities other than teaching 234 BHS students Mr. Foster, Mr. Jessen, Mr. Cinnamon, and Mr. Sauerwein drove school buses, morning and evening. Mrs. White served as the advisor for the school's Employment Occupation program. Other teachers chaperoned dances held by various clubs throughout the year and still others gave their time to work at basketball games. The faculty as a group also served as judges at pep assemblies and during Spirit Week. Those teachers who were club and activity sponsors deserve commendation too.
