It has been our honor to prepare this book for publication in order that you might receive the satisfaction of looking at the students and their activities. This has been a year of excitement and joy, but also one of deep sorrow. During the past year two students of our class were killed in automobile accidents. The Class of 1968 has therefore dedicated this yearbook to these two boys and to another who passed away while we were in grade school. The staff has tried to make this book worthy of its dedication. We hope you will enjoy this year's yearbook, the CHIEFTAIN”. 3 IN MEMORIAM We, the Senior Class of 1968, dedicate our yearbook to Alan Porter, Dennis Johnson, and Michael Bridson. Their untimely deaths were deeply felt by everyone, and their memory will never be forgotten. 4 7 r'T BOARD OF EDUCATION LEFT TO RIGHT: Gerald Cluskey, Alfred Arnold, Secretary; Paul Gilles, Robert Carroll, John Sloan, President; Joseph Blundy, and Joseph Gutos. The Board of Education is the official body of our Unit District. Their responsibilities include setting school policies, hiring the faculty, and establishing building programs. The current Board has worked together as a team for the past two years. We are exceedingly fortunate to have such a conscientious group of men who have dedicated their time to make intricate decisions which benefit our community. SUPERINTENDENT and SECRETARY We are extremely fortunate to have two competent administrators at the helm of BHS. Mr. Jensen, as superintendent is able to meet the demands placed upon him by students, faculty, the school board, and parents. Of course, supporting every successful man is his secretary, and this is no exception. Mr. Jensen comments, The reason we work together as a team, is that when we started we drew a line halfway between the office and our home, I'm boss on one side of the line and I prefer not to discuss the situation on the other side of the line. We are very lucky to have a superintendent and secretary as capable and efficient as Mr. and Mrs. Jensen. They are a team well worthy of our praise. Their job is not easy, but they always seem to have time for a friendly word. Their patience and the willingness to sacrifice much time, and aid the students with problems that arise is greatly appreciated by us. Have you ever called the High School for some reason and heard a girl's voice say, Brimfield High School ? It was probably one of the eight office girls who are at their daily post during their assigned period. They are chosen at the beginning of each year by Mrs. Jensen. Their duties range from picking up absentee reports from various classrooms to typing and filing. The office help is a group of hard working girls who enjoy their job. The Student Council is a group of student representatives from the various classes. It consists of two members each from the Freshman and Sophomore class, three Juniors, and four Seniors. The duty of the Student Council is to pass all work days and dances presented to them by the class representatives. Each year they are also responsible for putting on a school assembly. The council works hard to try to represent and set a good example for the Student body. 11 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY FRONT ROW: Adviser Mr. Jones, Kathy Smith, Candie Blackwell, Jackie Pullen. Basketball 1,2. Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. This is your on the spot reporter, Micky Bitsko, bringing to you live and in three-dimensional color, the Alumni Banquet 1993 of Brimfield High School. Gathered here tonight are some of the nation's most renowned citizens. As you all know, in recent years Brimfield has grown from a small country town to the world's second largest megalopolis being exceeded only by that of Kickapoo. And now the honored guests, the Class of '68, are beginning to arrive. In the distance I see that nationally known figure, the vivacious editor of Body Beautiful, Deanna Baker. Through the years she has become famous for her management of one of Brimfleld's best selling magazines, and with her is Janet Barnes. Autograph seekers are rushing up to Janet from all sides to have her personal signature on their copy of her latest book, BRIMFIELD PLACE. People were at first shocked by the book's contents, but they finally realized it was simply a dramatization of everyday happenings. Cindy Carlson, better known as the Fit, Fat Lady, has just arrived, carried by two of her own pupils. She is the first P.E. teacher to Invent an exercise machine which leaves one fit, fat, and flat!!! Her system has been used around the world by people who want to exercise and stay fit but do not wish to lose weight. Entering by a side door is Miss Connie Colgan. She has become so famous in her occupation as a homemaker that she has taken over the Betty Crocker Awards and now gives exceptional high schoolrhomemakers her own Connie Cplgan Awards. Here comes Nora Dennis wearing her usual mod clothes of 1968. This evening she has on a psychedelic flame pink and purple jump suit. Recently she became an antique dealer specializing in furniture of the '68 Era. Following her is Dale DeVries, publisher of Hot Rod. Let's see if we can get a word with him. Hello, Dale. Can you tell us how you became interested in cars? Yes, I believe it was my blue, '59 Chevy--the finest car I ever owned---which first gave me an intense interest in cars. Thank you, Dale. Among them are Brinfield's District Representative to Congress, John Donath, that ever-popular, dynamic politician and Mary Kay Gilles, the first woman astronaut to bring MEDICARE to the moon. Now there is a brave woman. Women astronauts were at first hard to find because none of them wanted to go faster than the speed of sound, but Mary Kay volunteered for the job and has since gone down in history. Screams can now be heard. Here comes Dennis Gilmore, star of Sex and the Single Man. Women are fainting at his feet, but he is cool and calm. His smelling salts are really in use tonight. He carries his own to revive his fans. The press is busy taking pictures and getting interviews of this really big time actor. Richard Green, the hippy-dippy disc Jockey and classmate of Dennis, is getting an interview now. Green is known for his fast wit and never ending gift for conversation. He recently beat the record by talking 48 hours straight on Brimfield’s local station, W.F.U.N. Paul Grove, a famous musician known across the nation for his classical guitar music and flashy clothes, has just arrived. His electric guitar has an outlet into which Paul plugs his suit; in this way he can really turn on. Paul is best known for Down in the Valley Where the Green Grass Grows, With the Sun in the Sky.... Paul sings his hit song while his suit flashes green and orange lights. His career was almost ended when, during one performance, his suit short circuited, but Paul has since recovered completely. That great athletic star has just come through the door. Larry Gutos was the first person in history to ride the tidal wave on Kickapoo Creek. This dangerous feat has left Larry unscarred and totally unaffected. Brimfield should really be proud of this athlete. Another physical-fitness man from BrimfiekPs class of '68 is trampolinist, Jim Hattan. Jim is still weak and recovering from his latest accident. He was recently pried off the ceiling at his last performance. He always was JAMES HATTAN Jim I do the hardest work of my whole day before breakfast: getting up. It s hard to believe, but here comes Steve Howard. Last we heard, he was on a safari in the heart of Africa. He was fighting U-Bang-E pygmies until they told him to pick on someone his own size. There s Junior Lane, an English literature professor. Junior always did enjoy English IV so it came as no surprise to any of the class of '68 when he decided to become an English professor. Junior made college history when he read the entire works of Shakespeare while standing on his head. One of the less prosperous graduates of the class of 68 is Larry Lehman, who is head truck driver for the distribution of PLAYBOY. Let’s see if he feels he has failed. Good evening, Larry. I d like to know how you feel about your Job. Well, Micky, all I can say is that I may not be famous; but I enjoy my work and I believe that is the most important thing about a career. Well said, Larry. The head of the Labor Union is now approaching, that dauntless, powerhouse, Roger Lydick. Few people who knew him in school days realized his potential. But Roger knew he was just waiting to show his talents. Secret Service men have begun to arrive as the first woman President of the United States nears this gathering in her motorcade. Barbara Miller, Madame President as we of the public relations department call her, has just left her car now and is really making a grand entrance. Many students believed Barb to be shy; little did they realize she was simply keeping her political views a secret until she decided to run for the Presidency. Munstedt, noted psychiatrist and philosopher, has arrived. Several of his patrons are behind him carrying ms couch in case of an emergency. 1 read that he never goes anywhere without his couch because he believes that no one can be sure when insecurity and frustration can hit, leaving a person defenseless. As he enters the hall, Bill Munton-five time winner of the Minneapolis 500-makes an impressive sight. May we have a word with you Bill? Tell us your opinion on racing please. I believe racing as a profession and racing as a private citizen should be absolutely separated, and I do just that! Thank you. I just noticed a shifty character come in. His dark glasses and trench coat would seem to indicate he wishes to keep his identity- concealed. And no wonder, it's Mike O'Toole. Word by the grapevine has it that Mike is a secret agent, new man from A.U.N.T.I.E., the American Unionization of National Teepeeing International Espionage. Machine guns can be heard now in the distance as Brimfield's toughest gang is headed this way by Mafia leader, Jackie- Pusher”-Pullen. Her notorious gang, known as Mama's Big Boys, is breaking up the crowd. Jackie is wanted in seven states and definitely not wanted in the rest. That was some entrance, but she is not the last to arrive. Keith Rieker is following at a distance, helping to aid victims of the gang along the way. Keith is really an All-American, red-blooded man who shows what can be done with a little determination. He is the famous tycoon who bought Rockefeller Foundation and turned that useless Memorial into the productive farm it is today. Kathy Smith is making her way over to us now and we may be able to talk to her. Kathy, as you already know, is a karate expert. How are you kathy? Tell us something about your use of karate, please. Of course. It was rather natural for me to become interested in karate. The yells are extremely important; and KEITH RIEKER Keith He smiled and said, 'Don't rush me girls.' G.A.A. 1,2,3,4; POW WOW 4. through the speech course I took at Brimfield High School as a '68 student, I was able to learn how to project. I believe this was the single most important factor in my becoming a karate expert. The graduates of 68 had high hopes for Robert Smith and his future, but for some reason his mathematical genius just never took full blossom. He is now custodial engineer at the new Nuclear Physics Building here in Brimfield. There are rumors that he runs the entire plant himself on the night-shift, but that may be just idle gossip. What have we here! Larry Tucker, that International Playboy, has just arrived with several carloads of admirers. There has been a book written about him entitled, Who's Afraid of Larry the Wolf. Oh, well. . . on to the next arrival. Liz Vale--meter maid for the Brimfield's new downtown district—came on a unique jet-propelled minibike which she uses for making collections. Elizabeth, would you like to say anything to the listeners at home? Howdy! Thank you. Vicki Ward looks very trim and proper as director of the Salvation Army Band, (when not directing she plays the bass drum). Miss Ward is one of the many graduates of '68 who has kept her high ideals and standards. Brimfield can be proud tonight. It looks like there is only one more member of the Class of '68, John West. John, as the organizer of the new Southern Confederates, actually risks his like coming here tonight. Yes, one can say that West is the South's greatest leader, and the South is West's cause. This is Micky Bitsko saying--remember that wonderful year nineteen hundred sixty-eight. Little did the youth of that year realize how powerful they would become and what heavy responsibilities they would have to carry----------- Youth of today, take heed! This award is given each year to the girl whom the faculty believes to have such outstanding qualities as good citizenship, leadership, school spirit, initiative and patriotism to her class. Cindy has served as Vice-President of the Student Council, as Recreation Chairman and Treasurer of F.H.A., as a cheerleader, and as co-editor of the CHIEFTAIN. She has proved herself to be a dependable, resourceful individual through her participation in G.A.A., Spanish Club, and the junior play. She is recognized for her leadership abilities and her sense of humor. As a member of the University Avenue Methodist Church, Cindy shows enthusiasm for outside activities as well. Cindy—a semi-finalist in the Illinois State Scholarship and member of the top ten of her class--has been accepted by Illinois State at Normal. There she plans to major in Physical Education. Cindy's personality and enthusiasm distinguish her as an outstanding citizen. 20 GOOD CITIZENSHIP Each year the faculty of Brimfield High School selects an outstanding senior boy to receive the Good Citizenship Award. This year Keith Rieker, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Rieker of Brimfield, was chosen. One of Keith's outstanding areas has been Vocational Agriculture. Keith has taken all four years of agriculture and has been an active member of the F.F.A. During his junior year, Keith served as secretary and president as a senior. In addition, he served as treasurer of this area of the state F.F.A. organization, Section Five. Besides his work in F.F.A., Keith has been active in other activities. A trombone player in the band for three year, Keith has also been in the last two junior plays. As busy as these have kept him, Keith has managed to help edit this yearbook. In the community, Keith is a member of the Lutheran Church and is president of its Walther League. Keith's plans for the future include the University of Illinois and a major in agriculture. His scholastic average and test scores made him semi-finalist for the Illinois State Scholarship. With his cheerful disposition, leadership qualities, and dependability, Keith is deserving of this award. 21 , us continue... Your diploma is a ticket to the adult world . . . but good only for entrance. The best seats in the house are reserved for those who pay the full price: continued education and continued self-improvement. And you can continue your education. At a university ... at a community college ... in an apprenticeship program of local industry. By furthering your education you'll be better prepared to earn a place up front in the future of this ever-more-complicated, ever-more-demanding world. □ CATERPILLAR An Equal Opportunity Employer 22 Mary Bale Mike Barnewolt Becky Beever Candle Blackwell Patty Blundy Jan Bridson Kathie Cahill Larry Carlton JUNIORS—CLASS of '69 Ronny Cluskey Steve Cluskey Jim DeVries Phyllis Eden Patty Fitch Dennis Gavin Sandy Geitner Joe Gelling Steve Gilles 24 ARCH'S BARBERSHOP ELMWOOD, ILLINOIS Tim Barker Handy Heinz W ayne Howard Dorita Lewis Vicky Lyons Tom McDonough Bob McKown Glen McRae Marcia Munton Dwayne North Debbie Robertson Mike Sprinkle Tom Stenger Steve Streitmatter Florence Symonds Tom ZInzer JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS President...................Ronny Cluskey Vice-President............Tom Stenger Secretary ..................Sandy Geitner Treasurer...................Mike Sprinkle Reporter.................. THIRD ROW: Junior Lane, Joe Helms, Bob Snyder, Larry Carlton, Tim Harker, Jim Hattan, Dwayne North, Paul Grove, Dennis Gilmore. This year has been a busy one for the chorus. Under the directorship of Mr. Franke, they performed for the Mothers' Club, participated in the annual Christmas program, and represented Brimfield at the spring I.C.A.C. Choral Festival at Yates City, singing numbers that differ in style from What Child is This to What the World Needs Now is Love , a recent popular classic. Chorus is a subject that adds to one's education and helps to round it out. Chorus members learn to read music, train their voices to sing octaves, and learn to appreciate music in general. Besides the serious singing that is done, a member finds a great amount of personal enjoyment from the course. There are different types of music sung in chorus: classical music, a few folk songs, and a few spirituals for Christmas and Easter. The chorus this year has tried to boost the spirit of Brimfield and improve the quality of the school. 36 BAND FRONT ROW FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: Joe Helms, Elizabeth Rook, Jackie Pullen, Nora Dennis, Janet Blundy, Rose Johnson. STANDING: Director Mr. Franke, Ed Eden, Ed Gilles. Not Shown: Dwayne North, Robert Smith. The band is a unique organization that is made up of several students. Because of the small number of the band, the grade school members have been added to enrich the quality of the band. Under the directorship of Mr. Franke the band performed this year for most of the home basketball games. As a rule they played jazz and popular rock and roll tunes at these games. Some of the tunes were, Georgy Girl, Downtown, and Music to Watch Girls By. The band also represented Brimfield in the annual Spring Band Festival, held at Brimfield. Some of the songs included the marches Porgy and Bess and The Thunderer and the popular tunes Thundercrest and The Grand Ball. Williamsfield, Glasford, Elmwood, and Yates City also participated in the festival. Because of the small size of the band, special recognition should be given the people who have tried to make the band a better organization, of which Brimfield can be proud. 37 JETS SEATED: President Robert Smith. The Junior Engineering and Technological Society, JETS, is an organization of students whose interests include almost all branches of science. Every year the members of this club select their own private projects and one for the group as a whole. This year the group project included the use of a small computer, the Minovac 601. Any student interested in science is welcome to the meetings. 38 LIBRARIANS Adviser Mr. Furman, Candle Blackwell, Clara Symonds, Vicky Lyons, Jams Bridson, Joann Engelke, Terri Dotson, Deanna Baker, John Sprinkle, Larry Gutos. EDSON SMITH SONS, INC. 50 HARDWARE. HEATING, PLUMBING ELMWOOD, ILLINOIS Not highly touted at the beginning of the season, Brim-field's 1967-68 Indians proved short in size and experience, but long in winning basketball. After stuttering to a 5-5 start, the Tribe took off on a winning team that produced a substantial winning streak, ended only in District play. Among the outstanding highlights of the year could be included performances by Larry Gutos, particularly in the sparkling 44-42 decision over Princeville. Bill Munton provided a share of thrills, not always by scoring, but often by scrapping and second effort in clutch situations. Other starters who contributed to this heavily junior team were Steve Streitmatter, Tom McDonough, Tom Stenger, and Jim DeVries, all of whom loom as experienced hands for next year. Among the victims could be listed Glasford, with whom the Red and White tied for the IC AC crown, Brimfield's third straight shared title; Elmwood twice; Princeville, Wyoming, and Dunlap as other Blackhawk victims; Mid-County; and the other conference teams. By winning the conference kudos, the Indians retired the JOURNAL-STAR Big S trophy, awarded to the first team who wins the conference three times since the previous trophy. In addition, the traveling ICAC owl, looking much the worse for wear, settles his bedraggled feathers at BHS until next year. The Little Indians fared less successfully, suffering a year that was frustrating. Primarily freshmen, the jayvees found that lack of experience was a factor in many close games. Next year the team should have a full complement of experienced sophomores, and the prospects look brighter. • II . I 't ll HIM 1 II M I V II I I I EXCHANGE STATE BANK I off Brimffield fflii! A :a! In order to encourage greater dramatic participation, Mrs. Greenbaum decided to allow anyone in high school to participate; therefore, the play was not restricted to the talent of any one class. The result of this new participation in the play was evident. In the play were one sophomore, four juniors, and six seniors. directed by Mrs. Greenbaum SENIOR POTPOURRI Last year's senior class, under the direction of Mrs. Greenbaum, presented a series of readings and short plays which they entitled pot-pourri , a literary medley. This new approach to the tradional Sr. Play brought a welcomed change from the usual three-act play of the past. With such a mixture in the program, it was difficult to find anyone who did not enjoy himself.
