We are sincerely appreciative for his help in guiding us, not only in the production of this yearbook, but also for the many hours spent as advisor of both our junior and senior years. He has helped us in every way possible to make our school activities more successful. 4 ANDREW HAUK BOARD OF EDUCATION CHARLES HAYES SECRETARY ROBERT CARROLL FABIAN CAHILL PRESIDENT We wish to thank the Board of Education for their untiring efforts spent toward solving our school problems. We are especially grateful to them for making possible the educational facilities we have enjoyed the past four years. CHARLES COX Mrs. THOMAS SPENCER JOSEPH BLUNDY ADMINISTRATION Message From Superintendent As you seniors have gone through the past twelve years of school it may seem to you that you have been in school for a long time. Completion of high school work is the traditional mark of the beginning of the new interests and activities of the adult world. It has taken many years to prepare for this event. As the years roll by, those twleve years will seem very short and soon fade into memories. This event of termination of high school attendance is truly termed commencement as it will be the beginning of learning many new responsibilities in life. Out of your years of learning, the most significant gain will be the realization and utilization of your ability to use the learning process to your advantage as you go on through the future years of adult life. As you go through the busy years of the future we hope you will remember those of us who had the pleasure of working with you in Brimfield. Congratulations on your successful completion of a long task and best wishes for your success in the future. Carl Jensen The Class of I960 would like to acknowledge their appreciation to Harriett Peters for her services the last four years. We realize that teachers and books are the real constituents of a school, but without an efficient secretary, we would have never survived. Thank-you, Harriett, you have been wonderful! At our first class meeting we elected the following officers: President--Mary Ann Schelkopf, Vice President--Jim Clay-baugh, Secretary--Rosana Duggins, and Treasurer--Gene Sollenberger, and our class advisors were Mr. Martin, Mr. Hamby, and Mr. Schultz. For Student Council members, we elected David Coon and Pat Johnson. During the fall we began the successful project of moneymakers. We elected Bob Ashley and Pat Johnson as the King and Queen candidates for the Snowball Dance in January. As our freshman year came to a close, we found ourselves well represented in all school activities. During the year we had lost Chuck Barnes, and during the summer vacation Rosana Duggins was to leave us. On August 30, 1957, 23 bright Sophomores started their second year at B.H.S. Elected with the help of our advisors, Mr. West and Mrs. Carlson, were these SHIRLEY FOSTER Reporter A quiet charm, a pleasant way. The Student Council representatives were Gene Sollenberger and Bob Ashley. For our class projects, we again picked up corn, sponsored a dance, and had a hoboday. As the King and Queen candidates for the Valentine's Ball, we chose Janice Whitson and Gene Sollenberger. Our sophomore year ended in both joy and sadness--we had lost Gene Sollenberger, Nancy Vantine, and Tommy Smith, but we did receive our class rings the day before school was out. On a very hot August 28,1958, 22 Juniors, including Lyle Slane who joined our class from Elwood, began a very busy year in every way. We first met and elected our President--Jim Clay-baugh, Vice - President--Jim Coulter, Secretary--Gary Smith, Treasurer--Mary Ann Schelkopf, and Reporter--Jim What would school be without joys; what would life be without boys ? Mary Ann Schel-kopf, Jim Claybaugh, and Pat Johnson were chosen as the Student Council members. Soon after school had begun, Ronnie Kneer left us to join the armed forces. After several weeks of hard practice, we presented the humorous play, The Magic Touch on November 7, under the direction of Mrs. Rasey. Early in January we began planning for our Valentine's Ball held on February 14, 1959. We nominated Mary Ann Schelkopf and Jim Coulter as our King and Queen candidates with Mary Ann being crowned Queen of the Ball. After struggling through our term papers, we started to work on our all-night prom entitled The Spanish Hacienda. The gym was decorated as an open patio with flowered pillars, and the music was by Kenny Hess. On August 27, 1959, 23 starry-eyed, anxious Seniors entered the halls of B.H.S. for their last and most eventful year. During the summer Betty Kell 14 JERRY PILLMAN left ust but as school started, we had gained Dan Bowers from East Peoria and Dottie Satorius from Iowa. Jim Clay-baugh and Mary Ann Schelkopf for the third consecutive yearwere elected as President and Treasurer respectively. Bob Ashley was elected Vice-President, Mary Savage--Secretary, and Shirley Foster--Reporter. Eleanor was also chosen as a Student Council member in addition to those elected in the junior year. Soon after school had begun, we began planning for our yearbook, the CHIEFTAIN. We chose Mary Ann Schelkopf as Editor-in-Chief, Sandy Parks as Layout-Editor, Jerry Pillman as Business Manager and Jim Coulter as Photographer. On October 11, 1959, we sponsored a ham dinner, netting a sizeable profit, and on November 14, 1959, we had the Harvest Ball. Our year was topped off by a CHIEFTAIN Review and our Senior Play. The Girls' Athletic Association is a group of girls concerned not only with developing interest and skill in athletics, but also in achieving good sportsmanship. They meet for an hour after school once a week. Each meeting warrants 3 points for each member. To be eligible for a letter, each girl must earn 75 points. The GAA became very active in such things as sending one member to GAA Camp, sponsoring the Necking Dance, holding the first formal initiation of all members, sending a food basket at Thanksgiving to the South Side Mission, and having a chili supper. According to our constitution, a member must maintain a 3.5 semester average with no semester grade being less than a B. Only Juniors and Seniors can be full-fledged members while Sophomores can be probationary members after they have completed the first semester of their Sophomore year. Besides scholarship, the students who are chosen by the National Honor Society Board must possess leadership, personality, neatness, politeness, and other good citizenship qualities. Membership in the National Honor Society is highly respected, and Brimfieid is proud of its scholars! Only three Senior girls, Pat Johnson, Sandy Parks, and Mary Ann Schelkopf, were qualified to be on the Quill and Scroll this past year. The purpose of the Quill and Scroll is to promote journalism and to instill in students the ideal of scholarship. To be chosen for the Quill and Scroll, the three girls had to have been in the upper third of their class, done superior work in some phase of journalism, and been recommended by the supervisor, Mr. Linn. These three girls have worked diligently on the POW WOW and CHIEFTAIN and helped make them the success that they are. Pat Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Johnson of Brimfield was chosen this year by the faculty to receive the DAR award. Pat was qualified to receive this award because of her high standards, leadership abilities, initiative, and her service to her class and school. In addition to having these qualities, she maintained exceptionally high grades throughout all four years of high school. When something had to be done, she was always there ready to help, help. The faculty selected David L. Coon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Merle Coon of Brimfield, as the recipient of the annual Good Citizenship award. This award is given by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Dave was selected because of his high scholastic standing, good conduct, and integrity. He displayed enthusiasm in everything he undertook. For these reasons, he is one of the outstanding citizens of Brimfield High School. After the delicious turkey dinner with all the trimmings, everyone danced to the romantic music of Kenny Hess and his orchestra. Refreshments were served by candlelight among the ivy and flower-covered pillars, and the Grand March proceeded around the wishing well in the center of the floor. As each senorita and senor danced across the hacienda, he was enhanced by the great sky-blue, sloping ceiling. As midnight came upon them, the evening had only begun as everyone departed to Elmwood to see an exciting movie. To conclude this wonderful evening, breakfast was served in the high school gym. The night and morning of the Jr.-Sr. Prom was only the climax to several, fun-filled weeks of preparation and hard work. Although we often became discouraged with the falling pillars or drooping flowers, we, the class of I960, sincerely enjoyed these many long, hard, and busy hours of work and all the fun that goes with such a project as the prom.
