1953 I li e SPECTATOR Published by THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1951 Editor.......................Gary Best Assistant Editor..................Joan Lyons Business Manager..................Andy Hank Advertising Mana ct...Margery Smith Advisor........................Barbara Mitchell The---53— - = SPECTATOR On behalf of the entire staff, I am proud to present this 1953 edition of the Spectator. We have endeavored to make this the biggest and best yearbook in the history of BHS. f hope that you will receive as much satisfaction from reading it as we have received from working on it. I would like to express my appreciation to Mrs. Mitchell for the tremendous job she has done as our faculty advisor of the Spectator. I would also like to thank Mr. Atwater and all the other members of the faculty for their co-operation in this project. Without their help, our task would have been impossible. I hope you will find this annual representative of Brim-field Unit School and the Senior Class of ’53. Read it—have fun! —Gary Lee Best t.s BRIMFIELD COMMUNITY UNIT SCHOOL BRIMFIELD, ILLINOIS PEORIA COUNTY SERVICE CO. MID-STATE SUPPLY CO. 415 Fayette Street Peoria, Illinois DEDICATION Wc, the Senior Class of 1953 of Brimfield High, take great pride and pleasure in dedicating this edition of the Spectator to Henry DeVries, the custodian of our high school. His cooperation, personality, and sincere effort to do his best at all times have made our high school years more pleasant. Mr. DeVries is now completing his nineteenth year with the Brimfield School District. For the first two years, he worked in the “Community Building. When the new high school was constructed in 1936, he became its first and onlv custodian thus far. That clean and attractive building now stands as a tribute to his untiring efforts. Mr. DeVries has seen every home high school basketball game during the past seventeen years. I le enjoys basketball a great deal and has been one of Brimfield's most loyal fans. He has also seen all of the Brimfield High School plays since 1936 except one. He was ill and in the hospital this Near at the time of the Junior Class Play. He reports that the thing that bothered him most while he was in the hospital was the thought of missing that play. By the way, during the nineteen years Mr. DeVries has been with the Brimfield School District, he has not missed over twenty davs of work due to illness. EXCHANGE STATE BANK Of Brimfield Brimfield Illinois The Passing Years During my nineteen years of being associated with the High School, I have seen and heard many varied events. One of the most satisfying events is that of watching the students come and go. then later taking their positions in life. 1 have had laughs and sad moments, but in my opinion the laughter has far outweighed the sadder moments. When the halls ring with honest and whole-hearted laughter, then my heart is happy. My sincere wish is to sec each and every student become a success in life and I hope that in my humble way, I may be of some help.” —Henry During the years wc have been in school, Mr. DeVries has shown a sincere interest in our affairs. He has helped us in every wav possible to make our school activities more successful. For these reasons, the Senior Class decided, by a unanimous vote, to dedicate this 1953 Spectator to our friend, Hcnrv DeVries. I Iknry DeVries FACULTY BOARD OF EDUCATION Tom Maher, President Kenneth Hamilton, Secretary and Treasurer The Board of Education plays an important part in the lives of the students. The members of the Board hire our teachers and maintain the upkeep of our buildings. We are grateful to these members who have so efficiently and conscientiously served this community. Seated left to right'. Kenneth Hamilton, Andy Whittaker, Fabian Cahill, Keith Cecil, William Goetze. Standing: Tom Maher, Superintendent I.ce Atwater, Harold Johnson. DUNLAP STATE BANK Member Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Dunlap, Illinois Shirley Culbertson, Secretary Lee Atwater, Superintendent Mr. Atwater always has time to say a friendly word to a student and to listen to his problem even though he is kept very busy being superintendent and helping the members of the faculty. He has helped us realize that we must work hard to achieve our aim in life. Miss Shirley Culbertson has been a very efficient office secretary for the past year. She is always friendly and greets everyone with a smile. Her efforts to help the faculty and all the students are appreciated very much. Elmwood L. RICHARD WHITNEY Attomcy-at-Law Illinois Lee E. Accompanying him are the world famous scientists, Dr. Gene Emerick and Dr. Andrew Hauk. Dr. Emerick and Dr. Hauk gained fame for inventing a slip-proof bath tub. A group of Brimfield citizens recently erected a statue of them and their new bath tub overlooking the Brimfield City Dump. Latest reports are that the statue makes a wonderful roosting spot for sparrows. This will be the tenth Bane-Emerick-Hauk trip to Africa and this time they are certain that they will discover something. New Book To Popularize Marriage Miss Jeanne Clark, President of the Clark Publishing Company, has announced the publication of “Advice to the Lovelorn,” a book by Carol Whittaker. Miss Whittaker is also the creator of the popular TV program “Auntie Carol’s Kitchen.” She was awarded the Pepto Bismo Oscar last year as the one who had done the most to popularize indigestion. INVENTIONS GALORE The Lyons Manufacturing Company announced several new products today. One was a game called Pony Express, invented by the famous coach, Dave Joos. Dave explained, “It’s just the same as Post Office with a little more horsing around.” Miss Joan Lyons, President of the company, also introduced a new’ solution to take any color whatsoever from one’s hair. This revolutionary new product will be called “Bleach!” Fleet Wasn’t Really Lost, Just Misplaced ♦ • ♦ Admiral Ronald Nelson Stables appeared today before a closed session of the Senate Investigating Committee to investigate conditions. Committee Chairman, Gary Best, ex- New Show Opens On Broadway “Death of a Detective,” a bright musical comedy, opened to a capacity house last night on Broadway. It looks as if Joyce Jump, author of the play, has written another smash hit. Starring in the parts of the two insane old maids were Jeannette Schmitt and Patricia Johnson, the two former burlesque queens. Now that they are working again, they plan to move from Skid Row where they have been residing for the past ten years. They are billed as the “Two who did more for the theater, than the once famed Marilyn Monroe did for calendars.” EGG TYCOON The senate confirmed the appointment of Fred Dungan as Secretary of Agriculture today. Dungan made a fortune in farming by developing a hybrid chicken which laid colored Easter Eggs. President Ralph Kingdon said that he was sure that Dungan would continue the farm policies which had kept the Republicans in power for the last twenty years. Also ratified by the senate today was the appointment of Margie Smith as Ambassador to Russia. Miss Smith had this statement for the press: “If that Malenkov won’t talk sense, I’ll punch him right in the nose!” plained that Stables was being questioned concerning the disappearance of the entire U. S. Fleet. The Admiral testified that the fleet w’asn’t really lost, just misplaced. It seems that he became confused and sent the fleet to Hawaii instead of the South Pole. In a surprise move, Stables appeared before the committee in a hula hula skirt to prove his point. After the hearing. Senator Best announced that his committee would leave tomorrow for Florida to investigate conditions there. LADY JUDGE SPRINGS TWO FORMER CLASS MATES FROM CLINK Decisions were rendered on two cases in the Kickapoo District Court today by Judge Gerry Camp. The first case concerned Joe Lauderback, famed lecturer, on “Don’t Be a One Armed Driver,” or “Necking and Driving Don't Mix.” It seems Lauderback ran down one of the students of his Safe Driving Class with his 1980 Cadillac Convertible. Judge Camp fined the student, was was left permanently crippled by the accident, $150 to pay the damages on Joe’s Caddy. The second case involved Mary Lou Nauman who was charged with manslaughter for running down the Pottstown Chief of Police while hurrying to a dress sale. When Judge Camp heard of the bargains at the store, she freed Mary Lou, adjourned the court, and left immediately for the sale. Gary Best was elected president of the organization, with Andy Hauk as Senior Leader, Karen Mulvaney as Junior Leader, Dick 1 leinz as Sophomore Leader, and Sue Hamilton as Freshman Leader. The cheerleaders also served on the planning staff of the club. The Pep Club members attended the ball games in a group and tried to build up school spirit. A pep rally was held the afternoon before each ball game. The main event of the year for the Pep club was the Bow Dance which was sponsored after the last home game. Approximately 250 people attended and saw Mr. Battrell crown Rolland Ekena as King of Basketball 1952-53. Rolland had been chosen for this honor by a vote of the students of BHS. As his Queen, he selected Nancce Heinz. Gary Best served as MC of the program. Winning the prize for the prettiest bow was Beverly Slocum. Illinois PYRAMID PAPER COMPANY 3530 West Fifth Avenue Chicago, Illinois Compliments of a Friend for i our hands • • • It’s a big, wide, wonderful world and we give it to you with our blessings. Our fathers gave it to us a generation ago. They told us it would be what we chose to make of it. They made it very plain that an education didn’t entitle us to any more of this world than anyone else; merely that with an education we’d be better equipped to face it, meet its challenges. Our fathers told us we’d stand a better chance with an education, and that we’d get more out of life. It was true then, and it’s still true now. And then, as though sensing an unspoken thought, our fathers added another word of caution. “Nor is an education a substitute for hard work,” they smiled. “It’s j ust a great help in that work.” We offer you the same words as those we received. We offer you the same world, slightly changed, but essentially intact. It’s for your hands to improve. We, the Senior Class, wish to express our appreciation to the business establishments who sponsored the previous pages and to the following who helped in donations for the publishing of this yearbook.
