Sponsor , PPDfHZCY • „ : Jane 1, ‘194$’ On my tour of the Army Camps this wook, I stopped at Camp Jubiloe near my fid home town of Brimfield. Imagine my surprise when I was presented to Major Anderson, known to his classmates of '43 as just plain Andy. He took me to the training field whero physical instructor Sorgoant Johnson was putting his trainees through fifty push-ups. However, Neut took timo off to come ovor and talk to me. He told me to be sure and bo around for tho ovoning because thoro was to be a baskotball tournament botwocn the Coast Guard from tho Chillicethe training contor, tho Navy from Peoria, the Marines from Elmwood, and last but not loast his own Amy boys. He assurod mo that his boys could win in spito of tho fact that the Coast Guard has Chiof Potty Officor Boubot; tho Navy, First Class Seamon Catton; and Marinos, Master Sergeant Savngo. At this point Major Anderson drew me away to show mo h is c amp hospital. Who should I moot thoro, but John Kingdon He'd fallon off his horso and nearly broken his nock. I'll give you three guossos who was holding his hand-or, I moan taking his pulcoj Nurso Botty Carfcor. About this time Supoi-intondont of Nuroos Ilono Miller, (about to bo Mrs. L. Johnson) entorod to find Miss Carter, and I wont on my way. As I stepped out the door a huge transport plane (so it looked to me) landod on the fiold and Betty Tuttle and Mary Etta Edwards steppod out. I went ovor to them and thoy told me that thoy were training for tho Air Evacuation Connand. Thoy both arc nurses and will be of vital 3orvice in transporting tho wounded from tho scene of battle to base hospitals by air. {fcjor Andorson thon showed mo the construction department. Hero I mot Duane Travcr, now a technical sorgoant, about to bo promoted for his master pieco of designing a new typo of pontoon bridgo aoross Kickapoo Crook. In the personnel department in the noxt room sat Charlone Kingdon, looking right pert behind that typewriter in hor WAAC uniform. Bohind her at tho filos was First Leader Ruth Maher. By this time I was hungry rso the major took mo to tho USO headquarters where I was served coffee by Edith Knight and doughnuts by Elsie Knight. I learnod that thoy oach lived im-an officer's bungalow with thoir officer husbands. Not bad, oh? The twins suggested I might meet some more BH3 alumni at the WAAC mechanic school. Thus I was on my way. I walked into tho mechanical repair shop and whose groaso-smeared faces should peer from under a jeep but Vina Herman, Francos Tiallaco, and Ma’V' °'t White. Ao I left the 3hop an airplane bearing Naval markings landod on the runway and Major Anderson said it was tho teams arriving for the tournament and for tho nil-service-man 3how to bo given that ovening. Oat of tho piano stooped WAVS Jane Pacoy, TAM, or, excuse me. Lady Marine Ruth Carson, and SPAR Irene Fry. Bohind thorn wore Aviation Mechanists Mate Speck, Coast Guardsman Beall, and Marino Sergeant Blundy. Since it was time for the games, we all went to the Sports Arona. Guess who won. Why tho Army, of course. Newt's boys couldn't disappoint him. The all-service-man show written and directed by Barbara Riggs, now a WAVE, was a howling success. And I went home, tirdd but happy. F.
