A man appears to have been murdered in a lonely farmhouse and his wife is under arrest on suspicion. A county attorney, the sheriff, and a farmer are fussing about in search of evidence against her, while two women friends, finding a slain canary and broken bird cage, divine the whole story of a woman driven to desperation by cruelty and neglect. The play, directed by Mr. Harrison, created much interest and enjoyment. The cast is listed below: . George Henderson, county attorney . Raymond Garrett Henry Peters, Sheriff . . . . . . . Richard Arnold Lewis Hale, a neighboring farmer . . . Richard Day Mrs. Peters . .,. . . . . . . . . . Helen Schooley Mrs. Hale . . . . Eloise Johnston DECLAMATORY ' Brighton has been well represented in declamatory contests for the past several years. There is much interest among the pupils, thirty reporting for pieces this year. Two years ago we were re- presented in all three divisions at the sub-district contest by Norman White in oratory, Jeanette Picken in dramatic, and Jeanne Hoskins in humorous. Last year Jeanette Picken again went to the sub-districtg and Roger Stannard, Ruth Wolfe, and Jeanne Hoskins won a cup for the highest average of all three divisions in the Washington County ,contest. This year Ruth Reighard won first at Crawfordsville and later second at Fairfield in the sub-district. Ruth Wolfe and Elsie Stout won second at Crawfordsville. In the county contest, which was held at Brighton, we were represented by Mildred Horner, Helen Schooley, and David Wentworthg and our team ranked second to Ainsworth. Anyone who is interested may take up declamatory, and it is good experience for everyone. The humorous contestants are coached by Miss Alice Rossing, and oratory and dramatics by Mr.Lewis Harrison.

----:riiv S'RA,RX 40:....- - ...:'. BAND N Brighton is gradually developing a strong bandg this is neces- sarily a slow process since the organization can, develop only as fast as high grade instruments can be secured. The new policy by which the merchants pay the band as a group, rather'than the indivi- dua1s,for summer concerts is making it possible to buy two or three high quality instruments per year. , This year the band made its best showing in the district music contest receiving a II ratingg moreover, Richard Day received a I rating on his scueaphone so1o,and the brass quartet received a sim- ilar rating. Richard later achieved a II rating in the state con- test at Fairfield. The present band is a very young organization. There are only a very few seniors on its personnelg and approximately ten of its thirty seven members are still enrolled in grade school. Mr. Joseph Christy, director, has been working with the present band only about two yearsg and will have two or more years with most of the group. VOCAL AND PIANO Brighton has one of the strongest vocal and piano departments of any school in this sectiong and the director, Miss Virginia Mar- solf, has raised this department to a very high plane. Outstanding achievements were the ranking of Betty Jeanne Hos- kins as I in soprano solo, in the state music contest at Fairfieldg and the similar ranking of Ray Leppert in piano in the sanmscontest. In addition the girls' glee club, girls' sextct, and the following soloists received II rankings in the state contest: Richard Arnold, tenor, and Ruth Reighard, contralto. In addition to the above, Wanda Smith mezzo-soprano, and the boys' glee club ranked I in the district contest. The boys' glee club was a new .organization this year and its showing was surprising since it is not usually possible to produce a district winner inane year. The boys are learning to enjoy singing, and should be a strong group in another year. The vocal music program at Brighton now begins in the pre- primary and continues through the twelfth gradeg Mies Marzolf has charge of all vocal music above the first grade. As a result the children -are learning the fundamentals of music and to sing at an early age. From all indications, there is a wealth of musical talent in the grade school, and the vocal department should continue toim- prove from year to year.
