A man appears to have been murdered in a lonely farmhouse and his wife is under arrest on suspicion. A county attorney, the sheriff, and a farmer are fussing about in search of evidence against her, while two women friends, finding a slain canary and broken bird cage, divine the whole story of a woman driven to desperation by cruelty and neglect. The play, directed by Mr. Harrison, created much interest and enjoyment. The cast is listed below: . George Henderson, county attorney . Raymond Garrett Henry Peters, Sheriff . . . . . . . Richard Arnold Lewis Hale, a neighboring farmer . . . Richard Day Mrs. Peters . .,. . . . . . . . . . Helen Schooley Mrs. Hale . . . . Eloise Johnston DECLAMATORY ' Brighton has been well represented in declamatory contests for the past several years. There is much interest among the pupils, thirty reporting for pieces this year. Two years ago we were re- presented in all three divisions at the sub-district contest by Norman White in oratory, Jeanette Picken in dramatic, and Jeanne Hoskins in humorous. Last year Jeanette Picken again went to the sub-districtg and Roger Stannard, Ruth Wolfe, and Jeanne Hoskins won a cup for the highest average of all three divisions in the Washington County ,contest. This year Ruth Reighard won first at Crawfordsville and later second at Fairfield in the sub-district. Ruth Wolfe and Elsie Stout won second at Crawfordsville. In the county contest, which was held at Brighton, we were represented by Mildred Horner, Helen Schooley, and David Wentworthg and our team ranked second to Ainsworth. Anyone who is interested may take up declamatory, and it is good experience for everyone. The humorous contestants are coached by Miss Alice Rossing, and oratory and dramatics by Mr.Lewis Harrison.
