'T:III:III1.1 9 S I5 A.ll X 4 0 QIIII1iIIIT 'u' BASKETBALL The Brighton High School Basketball team, coached by Raymond Forbes, showed much improvement over last years five, with the brightest hopes of many years for next season. Only two menxmll be lost from this year's aggregation by graduation. Richard Arnold, clever ballhandling guard, an NAll Ke-Washn guardg and John Chuck the team's leading scorer, who also placed on the NAll Ke-Washn team as well as the nAl1 Sectional' team. The team was rounded out with three juniors. Richard Day was at center. Richard was placed on the NAll Seotionaluteam at center. He also placed on the WAll Ke-Washn honor roll. Roger Stannard, lanky forward and a tall man for under the basket, rounded out the front court with Chuck. Robert Gier, scrappy guard, who was placed on the nAll Sectionalu second team, filled in the backcourt with Richard Arnold. Ivan Gier, Bert Wells, and Ivan Henry, all clever ball hawkcrs and good shoto, saw lots of action throughout theseason and should fill in next year's vacancy without trouble. George Howard, Rollin Colo, and Delbert Hesseltine showed plenty of basket- ball ability and will be scrapping it up for team berths next year. The Bears ended the season with twelve wins and seven losses. They ended the season in a tie for third in the Ke-Wash with five wine and five losses. They were victorious, twice against West Chester, twice against Keota, and once against Richland, they lost twice each to Wellman and Kalona and once to Richland.. They also were runnerups in the County and Sectional Tournaments. In the County Tournament, which was held at Wellman, the Bears fhumped Crawfordsville, 53-39, and then tripped Riverside 30-24. They lost to Wellman in the final, by a score of 44-25. In the Sectional Tournament, which was held at Fairfield, fha Brighton boys over- powered Farmington 36-l9. In the second round they put Birmingham out of the running with a 43-27 score, but were eliminated in the final by Packwood 43-32, The Ke-Wash Conference was exceptionally strong this year with Wellman and Kalona having very fine teams. It is interesting to note that three Ke-Wash teams, Wellman, Kalena, and Brighton all played in the finals of their respective sectional tournaments. It is also interesting to note that Brighton was defeated only once out of the Ke-Wash, and that defeat was by Packwood in the finals of the Sectional.
